Yay for Godot! Nice job on the sonar

tillbold 2021-04-27 02:36

the controlls are a little difficult without tutorial but good job to put out the nice athmosphere in the short time. Wish you all good for the future =)

cheekibreeki 2021-04-27 02:38

Cool sonar mechanic, a depth meter would be a cool metric to add as well as some supplies to pick up.

smelly-games 2021-04-27 03:05

Add a big mario eel.

whysguy52 2021-04-27 03:38

@cheekibreeki One of the rooms is called "Item Room" in the source files (the heat vent is called that) because I was going to add an item but ran out of time. Also, yeah, depth meter was thought of but I went with a compass that points up instead since I had trouble with orientation. Maybe in later iterations though.

@smelly-games I KNOW! I REALLY wanted to add some more art to the environment and really wanted fish. Something big. I swear I actually had the idea of putting an eel next to a vent to make it hard/impossible to get to without dying but, not time :(

ambear 2021-04-27 07:04

Oh, I couldn't play this game from browser because my mouse didn't want to disappear ( Btw I like system of energy taking, and scanner, looks cool GJ

whysguy52 2021-04-27 07:10

@ambear Yeah I don't know how to fix the HTML version sorry. I should probably remove it. :( Thanks!

ambear 2021-04-27 07:29

@whysguy52 Yeah, I think it is better to remove it Stay with portable version, it is more valuable for everyone!

whysguy52 2021-04-27 07:34

Uh oh... i think i just deleted the windows version

whysguy52 2021-04-27 07:41

Well, hopefully they don't think i'm cheating. I tried to take down the HTML version but it broke both so i had to re-upload both in order for either to show up :'( I'm new to itch.io

lrl64 2021-04-27 08:31

Oh, you made a dark game too lol. The mechanic of converting O2 to energy and energy to O2 is awesome. Delicate balancing act and keeps you on edge before you get to that next volcano. One thing I would have preferred is to have the switch mechanics be bound to buttons instead of having to toggle the mouse cursor on to do it which disables turning with the mouse. Makes it more trouble than it probably should be to convert while still steering. Cool game though.

whysguy52 2021-04-27 08:34

@lrl64 Thanks. I actually had that thought about 20 min after the game jam LOL and slapped myself in the forehead like "why did I do it this way?" I was walking home from 7/11

rein 2021-04-27 08:41

Unplayable in the browser, unfortunately :( Seems like a good game though.

lrl64 2021-04-27 08:43

@whysguy52 Haha, I know the feeling the same thing happened with my game. Would not have taken much time to put the controls and more info on the light chaining mechanics on screen on one of those popups at the start of the game. But in the last minute scramble to get it done we just completely forgot to do it. It was a facepalm moment. Lol

adamjn 2021-04-27 12:36

At first I was put off by the browser version but when I saw the comments I decided to give it a shot on download and Ive gotta say it was fun and has lots of potential. I really liked the energy to O2 conversion feature. Really cool little game.

mlkvr 2021-04-27 16:39

I actually played it in the browser without problems controlls are fine but I had to refresh few times to look which is key, the only thing I would like to add is more light maybe in a form of greenery that could enhance the atmosphere and add a little difference to the environment, Things like these always happens in first jam important thing is finishing it up its actually very big achievement and I want to congratulate you, good job mate!

fcvalise 2021-04-27 20:16

I like the sense of being lost here. Congratulation on your first ludum dare !

oc1d 2021-04-27 20:34

Nothing Tops a good scanner/sonar! Love that :) Was quite a bit hard after my first dead end did not reach the next vulcano. Kinda like the fiddly resource management.

lavialee 2021-04-27 20:36

Wow! Very atmospheric! At first I felt like the volcanos were too far apart, but it's actually pretty well balanced, you never feel too safe, really nice entry!

xeke-death 2021-04-27 21:38

Sonar effect is well done. Environment could use a few rocks and plants around the place. Sub sound is good. Was a little hard to figure out movement.

whysguy52 2021-04-27 21:43

@xeke-death did you try the windows version? Getting the mouse to work on the web version is a bit tricky and doesn't work for everyone. I tried removing it but it broke both uploads so I had to put it back. Yeah more environment stuff was something i had more time for :(

theg 2021-04-27 23:54

This game has similarities to mine. It was cool going into the depths and the sonar was neat but I think having the resource conversion set to keys would be good.

frozenheart32 2021-04-28 08:42

Nice idea in game.

zalos 2021-04-28 13:13

Took me a second to understand the controls but once I got it I was good to go! Was interesting driving a sub in 3rd person, good job!

whysguy52 2021-04-28 16:47

@zalos sorry you had trouble with controls. Is there a way I can improve it or clarify the controls?

zalos 2021-04-28 17:25

@whysguy52 Instead of tab then move the mouse to hit the button, possibly just a key for switching on and off energy to air. Took me a sec to figure out tab to get the mouse to press the button.

whysguy52 2021-04-28 17:36

@zalos oh for sure! Thats already on my list of features to change. I dont know what i was thinking. Maybe i just wanted to mess with using a UI for a control idk. My bad

bea 2021-04-28 19:20

Coll game and models. I found the oxygen conversion element a little tedious and difficult, and I died a lot frantically fumbling with it and going out of control. I think simple power resource might have been better. I really liked the sonar effect, both the visual and audio elements were really choice, and pulled me into the game.

whysguy52 2021-04-28 22:37

Thanks. I really appreciate that! I wish i could change the oxygen mechanic but its too late but i promise i will later. Ive gotten that feedback a bunch and im sorry :(. The audio, btw, is me blowing bubbles in a glass with a straw or me rubbing the mic LOL very simple

animatrix1490 2021-04-29 00:31

I'm very impressed that you made this on your own AND it was your first time doing a jam (and possibly making a game???). So cool! I honestly loved the player's submarine and its animations, and the audio was really cool. Whole thing was very atmospheric. There was something of a sense of dread.

Un-fun critique part: I would have appreciated some kind of...I don't know, "north" indicator on the ring around the up-arrow. I got a bit disoriented too on some occasions, but fortunately it was mostly NSEW rather than up-down. Oh, one other thing: I think being able to see the vents from further away would help. I understand if you don't want to mark the sub--if you want people to explore--but I think making the vents more visible (from like, 50m away instead of only like 10m away) would have helped me be a little less disoriented.

I'm still impressed. Amazing job!

whysguy52 2021-04-29 01:01

@animatrix1490 that was great advice thank you! at least it's new advice and I really appreciate that. I did consider pointing it north but went with up so I'll change that when i'm allowed. You should be able to see the vent smoke from REALLY far away actually but if it's still too hard, I can reshape them to be more visible with sonar or just make them emit light so you can see it from much closer or something. Thanks! I got new stuff to implement!

sharkmax218 2021-04-29 17:54

In my opinion, you should add drag force! Because if i do not move, its stay on one place.

wetburritosupreme 2021-04-29 18:06

Nice little game, a really clever idea of having two opposing resources to balance. I thought that maybe putting o2 to the energy didn't make sense until I lost control because of power outage. Good gaming moment! Good job!

interface 2021-04-30 02:55

Good work! I kept thinking the controls stopped working but it was the TAB to move between mouse capture that got me every time. I think the oxygen/energy mechanic is interesting and worth exploring further if you want to work on this game post-jam. Maybe also find oxygen pickups so you can choose to convert either one into the other? Happy to read in the comments you had fun with blowing bubbles. So did I on my game lol

whysguy52 2021-04-30 03:09

@interface @wetburritosupreme Thanks! I really liked the way it came out but realized people really struggled with the TAB function so i made a few edits for the V2 but please don't grade me on that version out of fairness. Just posted it if people wanted to try to get farther with better controls.

@sharkmax218 I agree! given more time, i would have interpolated the camera and added more physics like acceleration and drag. I'll add it to the V2 eventually.

ultimatewalrus 2021-04-30 05:49

Dude this is insanely good for your first gamejam game. You made something genuinely unique with a great atmosphere. Nice job!

xiyou 2021-04-30 14:20

As a 3d game has been very good, the atmosphere is very wonderful

profan 2021-04-30 22:53

Quite liked it, shame the movement of the sub didn't have a little bit more dynamics to it, but given it's your first jam entry and you're neither a dev nor an artist primarily.. Good work :eyes:

(I really enjoyed the sonar mechanic, also hi fellow Godot dev :D)

whysguy52 2021-05-01 19:39

@profan thanks! yeah i didn't have time to figure out how to interpolate the camera but I actually implemented that last night for the v2 build!

taximan981 2021-05-01 23:59

I got very confused with how to play but that was most likely because the text was so small in the web build, I figured out everything except transferring yellow stuff into blue stuff, i really liked the terrain and models so nice job!

dans17 2021-05-02 00:22

Nice job on your first game jam! I liked the sonar mechanic, but I wish the dead submarine at the end was bigger so that it would show up on the sonar. I actually made to the last room but couldn't find the sub until I looked at your video because I ran out of energy using the sonar to find a path out of the room. Others have recommended adding more physics to the sub movement; I also think this would make it more fun and that you could also easily implement a damage system with this by just having the sub lose oxygen when you hit a wall.

lintfordpickle 2021-05-02 21:18

A cool game and quite enjoyable. I couldn't figure out how to get the window to be a bit bigger though, and some text on the main menu was quite hard to read, but the mechanics weren't too hard to figure out. As someone else above mentioned, I feel like the game would have benefitted if the submarine's movement was a little more dynamic

fis 2021-05-02 21:33

Fellow godot creator :D as you said the mouse controls are not functional for the HTML version, I'm quite curious how you captured the mouse position in your code? In our game the capture of the mouse worked quite fine (viewport was 600px wide, using `clamp(get_viewport().get_mouse_position().x - 300,-300, 300)`). Some preloading would have been great as well, because the game in the HTML version appears to be stuck after clicking continue (as the game loads the 3d scene afterwards - preloading the scene at the beginning would make the starting time longer but the scene switch near instant).

Well done, you encourage me to make a 3d game next time :D

whysguy52 2021-05-02 22:02

@fis thanks! yeah I thought about preloading but I've only done it once before and ran out of time to re-learn it but I'll implement it in v2, but yeah, loading is a bit long. For the mouse, I used Input.set_mouse_mode(Input.MOUSE_MODE_CAPTURED) and then Tab to release the mouse etc. Understandably, this doesn't work for HTML versions unless there's something I missed.

3D is a bit to get used to but it's really not bad! Hope you're good at vector math lol jk it's not that bad. Godot has a few tutorials that are okay.

gorethumb 2021-05-04 05:33

silent, my dude, talking through this game with you was an absolute joy and i really look forward to playing it after the updates!

sorlok 2021-05-04 23:37

Cool idea, and well implemented. I definitely got lost in the caves, but I think that's part of the charm. Having some way to toggle between the two tanks without switching to the mouse would have been nice, and that mechanic could be expande don to set up some additional strategies.

whysguy52 2021-05-05 00:11

@sorlok I implemented key bindings to the buttons in V2 version so you don't have to toggle the mouse if you wanna try it out but thanks. Yes, originally, i did it because I wanted to have a bunch of buttons to interface with but I'll stick to keyboard bindings.

domsse-interactive 2021-05-08 22:07

Nice game idea. Design looked nice. The controls were just a bit strange. But all in all a nice project.
