I love a callback to the Atari Era! I love the aesthetic and I'm happy I didn't bow out before you get a chance to make sacrifices
Foon → Ludum Dare Explorer → LD43 → The King's Battle

@racyrebel Thanks! I hope no one misses the sacrifice part, it's the unique mechanic I had in mind when making the game
The sacrifice is an important part of your gameplay and I enjoyed that! Timing and choices are very important, especially with the two last enemies. Well done!
Nice game! I thought level 2 was impossible, nice twist there ;) I made it to level 3 but didn't understand what was that cross thing. Probably responsible for teleporting me back every few seconds...
Nice retro style. I also loved what you did with the sacrifice mechanic :)
@theog @kegnarok @cindys-arcade Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
@kegnarok Yes, that enemy is the one teleporting you. Since it has a lot of HP, you should secure the level first by killing all the enemies first
Cute graphics/aesthetic. I like the simplicity of it. Great use of the theme, too! I definitely noticed people struggled with the theme for this jam, and you did a great job!
@subtlydramatic Thanks! I will start working on a post jam version this week-end and release it in 1-2weeks on itch.io, feel free to check it out when it's done
Cutiest king ever!
@minelsaygisever Thanks :smiley:
This was a really fun game! I originally didn't know what was happening, if I hit the enemy or not, but once i actually found the GUI on screen, I started having a lot of fun. Great game!
Thanks @matthew-hrehirchuk , a hit animation was planned but I didn't make it in time. I will add it to the post jam version.
Ok now i'm super exited for the post jam version
It was a charming experience :)
I had an epic moment when the last remaining enemy was the upside down cross (I think it is) that was teleporting me back when I only had 10 HP left. BUT HEY I managed to destroy her! And the K part was really surprising because I definetely wasn't expecting a plot twist in this game. In your next game (or even in this one, if you continue it) I recommend to spend more time giving feedback to your players. It's difficult to see if I'm hitting or getting hitted.
ha awesome sprites! :)
@itsjustjord @fishbrain @orlandobatista Thank you!
@orlandobatista Hit animation was planned, but not implemented in time. You can expect it on the post jam version, which will be released in 1-2weeks. Thanks for the feedback and for sharing the game experience you had!
The reveal on stage 2 is very well done and subtle and I think that the core idea is fun and fits the theme really well. I would like if that when you defeat the enemy on stage 2 it would then automatically destroy the teleporter since it took a while to just move and press space.
Clever idea and fun presentation. Solid stuff for your first time out, please keep making more things!
Great work. There was a time or 2 where I was like "Not sure if this is right but it looks good. Keep doing it" which is very Atari for me. I like have to figure out how long to hold out before the sacrifice but not waiting too long and have your allies die.
Well done on your first game and first game submission! I could tell that there was a lot there that was planned to be added but due to time constraints you couldn't! That's okay though because I always look at the potential a game could have and I really enjoyed yours! Well done!
This is a very simplistic looking game. I'm impressed that you jammed it out in Pygame. It definitely integrated the sacrifice mechanic nicely. Good work!
I liked this, it has some kind of simplistic storyline and the idea is quite nice :D
Nice entry! I did however, find myself rarely using the sacrifice mechanic, since it wasn't necessary and didn't seem to help. The only level that I used this ability was in the first level with two health. This one was impossible without it, but in the other ones, sacrifice didn't even seem useful. I didn't understand what the cross things were, but it was annoying that they repetitively pushed you back. Otherwise a nice game with a clean, minimalistic art style!
An interesting idea. I really liked the bullet hell aspect. And the fact that you didn't use any engine is quite impressive !

Windows Defender found a virus in this game.
@bastilo On that blue pop-up, you see that the reason for blocking is because it's a new software made by an unknown publisher. It's a common thing with Ludum Dare games, and your game has the same issue.

Something you should always do here is running in a sandboxed environment, what I use is [Sandboxie](https://www.sandboxie.com/).
No, it's not that window. I check every game that I download with Windows Defender before I start it. It found a tojan in your files. Please run a check of Windows Defender on your files.
I'm well aware that some AV detect it as a virus, though I can guarantee you that there isn't. Here are some articles about this [1](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/43777106/program-made-with-pyinstaller-now-seen-as-a-trojan-horse-by-avg), [2](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/36876676/pyinstaller-creates-trojan-virus-when-converting-files), [3](https://github.com/pyinstaller/pyinstaller/issues/2988), [4](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/48464693/py2exe-detected-as-virus-alternatives).
Since I used Python and turned it into an exe file, my only option is to contact every single AV provider to whitelist my game. You can read [here](https://www.techsupportalert.com/content/what-false-positive-antivirus-detection.htm) about false positive.
Unfortunately there is no bullet proof way of knowing if it's a false positive or a false negative, therefore I recommend you to run in a [sandboxed environment](https://www.howtogeek.com/169139/sandboxes-explained-how-theyre-already-protecting-you-and-how-to-sandbox-any-program/).
However, thanks for reporting me about Windows Defender also listing it as a trojan, I have seen Twitch streamers play it and there was no pop-up saying it's a trojan. I will write Microsoft a mail to analyze my game and let you know once it's whitelisted.
@bastilo I can't reproduce it on my side and require some information, could you help me out? I need the detection name([can be found here](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/threat-protection/windows-defender-antivirus/windows-defender-security-center-antivirus#detection-history)) and the definition version([can be found here](https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=849601#definition-version)).
Thank you for your time!
EDIT: I submitted without the information and got the following response from Microsoft: [img](https://static.jam.vg/raw/f2f/d1/z/1f840.png)
Cool game, nice twist there at level 2!
Awesome game. I really love the retro feel!
I'm not sure what I did wrong but I could not get pass the second stage. The wave pattern the enemy produces has no breaks and I have no shields or a clear way to stop from getting hit. I always die no matter what. Still, nicely done for a first game. Keep at it!
@prodigalson You left the game too soon, you need to die 5times.
@hugonun oh? I did not read that anywhere...must have missed it.
@prodigalson It's not written anywhere, once you die 5times (takes ~30seconds), something new pops up and you can use a special ability to progress on that level.
Let me know what you think about it :)
Any chance of a Mac build?
@coda-highland Most likely not, since I don't own a Mac. Have you tried downloading the Windows version and running it using [Wine](https://wiki.winehq.org/Download)?
Yeah, I've tried it. Doesn't work out-of-the-box and I haven't tinkered with winetricks enough to figure out what's missing. I wouldn't mind helping you package it up if you want to share the source, though; there's no reason this shouldn't be able to work with a native build of PyGame.
Nice work for a first timer !
@coda-highland Turns out that the newest OSX version doesn't work with PyGame anymore, not even with the Python files. https://github.com/pygame/pygame/issues/555
@hugonun That's a useful report to look at, but it looks like the issue has mostly been resolved. There are some adjustments to be made, so that thread and a couple threads linked in it will be useful for the porting process.
