This is a pretty great idea that has tons of potential
Hehe, fun game indeed. Fits the theme pretty well. With some practice, one could get very good at this game. Good job (y)
Fun game! As for the others I didn't really get it at first though after a while it came to me! It sucks having to run all the way back to the donkey every time but oh well. Good game!
I just love the theme of games that feature a basic heroic story, but playing as someone other than the typical heros.
Hej och hå!
Squire is exactly what it sounds like. You play as a lousy squire who has to attend to three heroes: a warrior, an archer and a wizard. Oh, and there’s a donkey. The donkey holds all the different items and such, and the player has to manage the different items in the inventory and hand them over to each hero when requested. And the player has to remember to bring the donkey. And the player has to make sure that the heroes don't die. And the hero has to remember to bring the donkey. Did I forget the donkey? Did someone say tacos? The idea itself is outstanding and the game implements it perfectly, with a super fitting setting and theme. This is definitely one of the most innovative game ideas I’ve seen in the LD40.
The gameplay is good, but the user-interaction when it comes to the item interface should be looked over. The graphics are adorable and the voices and music is very fitting. This game idea has a lot of protentional I believe and it would definitely be interesting to see further development on it. Good luck and tack så mycke’!
This art is wonderful, I like it! Furthermore, playing the squire is an awesome idea for such game. I'd love to see this game being developed further.
Very cool game design, artful graphics and skilled music and sound effects! I don't think it fits the LD theme too well, but what the heck. It's fun, though stressful - and it seems to me that you have to guess in advance what will be needed next - otherwise the fighter dies to quickly when he runs out of sword...
Having to explicitly select the weapon is nuisance, just pressing the short keys 1-6 should be enough - I don't know how often I pressed 6 for Taco and ran away, just to find out that I had not selected it...
Certainly one of the highlights of this year's LD!
Really, really impressive. Great art and game play. Really fun as well! (Hej från sverige)
Thank you all for the comments so far. We really appreciate it, especially feedback on how we could improve on it.
@averagebrownie Thank you for your comment! Not the whole way back I hope. Did you use the carrot to make the donkey follow?
@miki Tack själv! Great feedback!
@mshopf Thanks a lot, very useful feedback
Pretty neat idea! I agree with what @mshopf has said a little warning before the heroes will need their stuff before becoming useless would be nice. Or maybe they should check their inventory before entering combat (or at least just for a while, so you don't have enough time to provide for all of them)
I like it in general, so congrats for this game!
It make me really rage and yell at my computer ! Wich mean.... it was a really cool, intense game ! I really get into it, and trying to juggling with what these people ask was very challenging without being unfair (I still think that the chosen controls are not the best, asking to have both hand in one side of the keyboard). The music and the little animation really work well, not breaking the intensity of the game.
But GODDAMMIT WHY THEY NEVER STOP AND WHY DID THIS ARCHER EAT ALL THE KNIGHT'S BURRITOS !
Great little game. I liked the whole concept of it, it was fun to juggle supplying your party and giving the mule what it wants. The audio and graphics were nice as well.
Some ideas: - Maybe making the player character faster would have felt good - I would have progressively added more heroes to the party (not different models, just more people), maybe starting at one hero - The same progression could have been applied to the items. So to start with there could have only been tacos and then potions etc. would have been added
Same as last comment, the archer seemed to eat the tacos when she was wanting arrows... made it really hard to get the tacos to who needed them.
Audio was nice. Which the heroes wouldn't keep running ahead constantly..
The concept is great and very innovative ;). I found it a bit frustrating to go back to the donkey to get the carrot but overall i really liked the game.
It took a while to understand how play this game, but it was rewarding when I finally reached those tacos! As others have pointed out, there was something wrong with the archer (maybe that was intentional, some weird joke I missed)... But very nice overall mood in the game, I especially liked the music!
Being the team manager instead of fighting the ennemies was quite interesting, i could actually see this be developed further with some nice features added. As it is now, the game does appear a bit static, but that's a nice entry overall
My god, I reaaaaally dig this game. The sounds are astonishing, gives a perfect mood for those different situations to find yourself in. Nice graphics, nice everything. What I dont get is how the theme "more you have, worse it gets" was integrated here. Also, is there an end to this game, or do you just wander around endlessly? Would be nice to have some more insight on that, like a little story.
4,5*!
Very cool idea, and the art style is very cute. The donkey mechanic was a bit annoying sometimes, having to equip the carrot to make it follow you. Also the hitboxes were too big, which was a good thing in some cases, but in other it wasn't (it was hard trying to get the tacos to one of the characters, the others won't stop eating them!) I didn't see a relation with the jam's theme though. But overall, it's a very interesting game. Good job!
Hehe, cute little game. Fairly easy, was easy to understand and went through it without any issues. Loved the art, overall a nice game. I'm going to assume you were expecting "You are not the main character" to be the theme, hehe. Because the only connection to the theme I made was that I'd be worse for me if there were more heroes, or the more needs my heroes have the worse it gets for me. But that wasn't really a feature in the game, since it was static gameplay from start to finish. Totally jealous of your game though, looks great and it plays nicely. You have a good foundation to build on, should you wish to implement more features. It's a great idea!
Please feel free to try our game, Paperwork, we're not at 20 ratings yet!
Hello, first of all, great visuals and music that suits really well! Audio is cute and game jammy! =)
I really love that you decided to go with the winning theme: ~~you are not the main character~~ The more you have, the worse it gets!
The game fully incorporates the winning theme and I'd be really stunned if you don't get a strong 5 star in the Theme rating.
The logic for the game itself seems like something you could spend a bit time expanding upon. Maybe the heroes go for sidequests and not just follow a spline? What if the heroes split up momentarily? The heroes seem to lose life when enemies aren't close. Is this bound to them wanting taco and not getting any? I think it would really add to the game if you added some more heroes and either let the player pick (but a squire has no say!) or random them. As far as I know, a squire is dedicated to serve a single master, so I didn't fully get this idea of 3 heroes depending on 1 squire. But I buy it for this jam.
It's a cute little game, but I think you should try to squeeze the game jam's theme in for it to be really successful.
Great game! Graphics are really cute and lots of humor included. Damn adventurers tho! Always rushing ahead. Never stopping for a taco, gah! So demanding... without me and Donk they would have been dead 3 times over.
Mechanics wise, I would have loved a more gentle curve, with the adventurers being slower/waiting in the beginning. Would also have liked a mechanic where the adventures would stop for a second. (campfire placement, only available every X seconds?) More diverse enemies would be nice, but to be fair, they are just a side-show.
Nicely done!
Nice enough. I think upping the players speed a little would make it more fun, because keeping the donkey close slows you down anyway. Pretty good over all.
The Graphics are nice, controls are smooth. I got Donkey stuck behind a tree once, but figured out how to coax him back.
Edit: Thanks for clarifying.
Really fun, great idea. I kinda wish they would stop for a moment sometimes though lol.
So many great comments, thanks alot.
About the theme. Yes, I agree that is weak compared to many other games. We wanted to make something about handling many heroes and many tasks at the same time. The fact that one of the losing themes were "you are not the main character" was unfortunate, and if we had realized this earlier, we might have gone for a different setting.
To the anonymous comment about file changes: 03.32 was the local time here in Sweden 28 min before the submission hour was over. It always ends at 04.00 here
Like @tacohej said, thanks for all the great feedback and comments! If we decide to continue the development of this concept we will consider many of your suggestions ❤️
@ribout-horace Sorry about the archer’s manners. I guess it is too hard to resist a taco when offered.
@yomalolo Thanks! You didn’t reach the end? You definitely should give it another try. There is a secret reward at the end… maybe taco related.
@joror Campfires, more enemies and side quests sounds awesome. We would love to add that!
This was brilliant. I can't see the slightest connection with the theme, either, I assume you started much earlier with a different one. Still, I love the graphics, the sounds ("tack så mycket :D"), music and the whole gameplay mechanic. Good job!
This was a pretty neat idea. I don't see how it relates to the theme though. Still it was pretty cool. The donky is kind of annoyingly slow, but maybe that's the point. It took several play throughs to win, as I found that I had to anticipate where the party would go, get ahead of them, and meet their needs as they pass by. otherwise I can't keep up with them. Maybe that's the idea though. Either way, pretty solid entry.
