LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Penguin Royale by OWC 2017-12-05T18:51:49Z

Penguin Royale is a cute and clever limited-space shooter. You play as a penguin that has a magnifying machinegun which is used to magnify the enemies, so much so that their weight crushes the ice beneath them. Furthermore, those very same holes in the ice created by the previous enemies, can be used by the player to lure other enemies to their deaths, even without shooting at them!

I really like how clever the gameplay is and how you managed to do something rather innovative, even if the game-type itself is so ancient. I love the story and setting, and the art is adorable. Even the Penguin-HUD deserves a gold-star for being so innovative.

The only thing I didn’t like with this game is the annoying choice of music. I didn’t feel like it was fitting at all and it was so annoying that I actually had to take my headphones off.

SpaceBadies by Mr.McGibblets 2017-12-06T06:13:44Z

From one first-timer to another:

SpaceBadies is a scrolling arcade space shooter which reminds me a lot of the classic Raiden games. You control a spaceship and as you progress by killing enemy ships, the more enemy ships will come after you. The game is simple, yet it feels pretty nice to play and as a first game its great. The graphics, music and visual effects are very fitting, but I’d love for the game to be a little more difficult.

The game is obviously a little unfinished but I’d love to see you continue with this project and add different types of enemies, enemy projectiles, and progression for the player’s own spaceship by adding different weapons. The way I remember it, the difficulty in the classic scrolling arcade space shooter games don’t come from number of enemies, but from number of enemy projectiles. Good job!

I have no idea what's going on but I love it. The graphics are incredible and I love the cute and adorable theme.

City Mayhem by Simon Rahnasto 2017-12-05T17:16:33Z

City Mayhem starts out as a slow and peaceful game where you jump around wielding a gun in each hand and shooting at whatever you like. People explode in confetti when dying and cars jump around on the roads. This instantly sets the trippy and humorous setting of the game. You're welcomed by the most annoying tune in the world playing on repeat, as you're set to rob banks and steal money. The more banks you rob, the more cops come after you.

The first enemies you encounter are slow and useless, but as you progress through the game, more difficult enemies come after you. After robbing a couple of banks, you start becoming fond of the annoying tune that you hated at first. You might even be humming along. It wasn't until this stage of the game that the game actually became challenging and really fun to play. It didn't feel like the same game anymore. Turns out that, being chased by multiple SWAT teams coming in from all different directions while wielding two fully automatic assault rifles and avoiding all the bullets and enemies that are scattered all over your screen, is pretty damn fun. It was also at this point that I realized that the creators chose to include the word "Mayhem" in their title.

Obviously, the game is rather unfinished and buggy, but the small/silly details, the challenging gameplay and the odd art style is what nails it for me. Oh, and a special shout out to the programmer that had to do the art himself!

Servant of Greed by miki 2017-12-07T17:03:42Z

Thank you all for your kind comments and support! Your feedback will be taken into consideration when further developing the game. That is way higher than any of us could get @simon-rahnasto, I'll put your record in the description if that's okay.

Thanks again guys and gals!

Fatal nightmare by imod 2017-12-05T20:17:07Z

WOW! Just wow!

Fatal nightmare is an awesome game where you play as a little girl stuck in a nightmare, where you battle monsters with a samurai sword. This is definitely the most clever and innovative game I have played in LD40.

The theme is AMAZING. I LOVE the dark and twisted theme that you chose to go with and even then the art on its own is INCREDIBLE. The gameplay itself feels pretty good as well, except some minor weirdness (for example, standing on monsters), but the plot-twist at the end is what seals the deal for me.

I would personally love to play a full-length hack ‘n slash platformer game in this dark and weird setting, and I bet others would too. Good job!

FORF by JohnDimi 2017-12-05T18:29:15Z

From one first-timer to another:

FORF is a retro top-down hack ‘n slash dungeon crawler game which felt really well-made to be honest. I love retro, I love hack ‘n slash and I love dungeon crawlers, so you won me over by default. On a more serious note its adorable graphics and sound effects paired up with the retro gameplay feeling and difficulty makes it a pretty nice and simple game.

It’s sad that you did not have enough time to add weapons, abilities and more monsters, and unfortunately, I didn’t feel like you nailed the theme, BUT what you should be happy and very proud about is that you’ve made a very stable base for a future game of yours and I really hope you do choose to continue with this project in the future. Good luck!

Squire by mambojambo 2017-12-05T20:33:06Z

Hej och hå!

Squire is exactly what it sounds like. You play as a lousy squire who has to attend to three heroes: a warrior, an archer and a wizard. Oh, and there’s a donkey. The donkey holds all the different items and such, and the player has to manage the different items in the inventory and hand them over to each hero when requested. And the player has to remember to bring the donkey. And the player has to make sure that the heroes don't die. And the hero has to remember to bring the donkey. Did I forget the donkey? Did someone say tacos? The idea itself is outstanding and the game implements it perfectly, with a super fitting setting and theme. This is definitely one of the most innovative game ideas I’ve seen in the LD40.

The gameplay is good, but the user-interaction when it comes to the item interface should be looked over. The graphics are adorable and the voices and music is very fitting. This game idea has a lot of protentional I believe and it would definitely be interesting to see further development on it. Good luck and tack så mycke’!
