@badly-drawn-rod It should work now! I am at school so I can't really do anything if this doesn't work :P
Just to confirm that the link now works...
Nice job! Apart from a few game feel things, it's pretty good!
I think the green aliens could have done with some kind of secondary motion (like a sine wave?) so that they're more interesting to fight, and I'd really have appreciated if my attack went slightly above and below my character, so that dropping down wasn't a death trap.
Other than those, it looks good and I was a little excited to explore the underground (even if there isn't that much)
the jump is quite floaty, the time to level up is really high and the path finding of the slime makes stairs your worst enemy, I like the art though and the sound effects have a decent effect
The skeletons remembered me of Castlevania ones. I think that the XP from each enemy could be a little bigger. You have to travel too much to kill enemies and level up. Nice game, congratulations!
That's a nice little game. It took a while to gain XP (as @thiagofr said) but apart from that, the game is well-executed. Good work.
The green aliens definitely need another type of movement, as they are sometimes impossible to dodge. The sound would benefit from a pitch randomizer, maybe turn volume down a little bit. The exp progression is tedious and the health power-ups would be of great help. I like the art though.
Really liked the graphics! Cool that you get new skills when lvling up, but it seemed like i didn't get any xp past lvl 4, so that was the end of my story. I didnt expect flying aliens tho! Good job!
Could do with some music and a bit more information on what to do to reach level 6, but other wise a cool game. Love the graphics and anims.
Instead of "more xp" I'd do something neater -- make a random golden slime or the like that gives way more XP and make it run from the player! :D
Game is harder than it appears at first glance.
@kolbjorn Thanks for the praise! You could progress, atleast sort of. The exp went less then 0, which was because of a bug. It's fixed now! The old version is called OLD_Intruder_Alert. And yes, it is allowed to fix bugs!
it takes a little bit ot long to level up. That is the only thing that needs some balancing.
Great job and congrats on finishing! I really love the art! I wish there was a little more to explore but what we have is fun! I agree about adding more experience for each enemy, and also about having the attack size be a little bigger. Maybe some screenshake too! I know this talk is linked to a lot but you should check it out, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJdEqssNZ-U. Overall I love it!
Got gang-raped by a group of cabbages : vegetophobia/10
More seriously it's amusing, a little long to experience maybe as other people said, but I have to say i'm impressed by your health bars. And the fact that there's levels, and in which you can upgrade yourself, it's pretty neat for a jam game
Will there be a Linux build?
Really nice graphics! they make the game feel alive. Movement is good and responsible. as everyone else have already said, i also kinda felt that the xp given was too little. I kinda waited for something to happen. Great game tho!
@lautregars Thanks, mate!
@odrez Unfortunately, no. Atleast not at the moment.
@seanw I might check it out!
Awesome game! Played a lot hahaha, but I always stop at lv 3 =( Great job
@amigopadilha What do you mean with you always stop at lv. 3? Do you mean that there is a bug so that you can't proceed or you giving up :P
Great game ! So fun ! I love your Pixel Art Style on Character !!
Love the art guys.Congratulations for the game!!
really nice game
looks nice, but it felt like its needs some rebalancing to be more fun, the jump feels a bit floaty, there is a bunch of references out there for designing jumps in platformers to be more fun and less realistic that are worth checking out.. This was my thoughts after playing for a while and not getting past level 1, after writing that I tried again and then made it till the end. After level 1 with the extra abilities it gets a lot more fun (and the floaty jump makes more sense) also I almost would have missed the flying saucer aliens (also more fun) if I had not accidentally jumped back up to the surface. So in the end i completed the game. So I would say just be careful of not showing the fun stuff to the user before they get bored. So Level 1 = boring Level > 1 = fun
@automatonvx Well, glad that you made it till the end! You and a lot of others have suggested rebalancing, which I agree on, but it is too late to change, isn't it? Idk, but glad that you liked the abilities!
I think the main problem for the game would be the player has very little place to maneuver (or maybe the monster AI can be more polished). You would often looking at a rolling slime downstairs but you know if you jump you would hit the ceiling and cannot get pass it forever lol.
And I think it would be a common sense that in an RPG or Action game when the player getting stronger, there would be more challenge. So I guess it is not a very good point for the theme?
@raven Yes, it does get harder. Like it says in the description: The more EXP you have, the worse it gets. There will spawn more enemies and add some new ones!
Love the visuals! The game itself was a bit too simple in mechanics to keep me hooked for long though - some other weapons (ranged?), some more enemies and/or some more story would have been nice. The controls themselves were smooth, but a hard time killing the green dudes since they are just as fast as you - you cannot easily jump over them!
Nice start to an 2d action RPG!
OK idea but several design flaws make game boring. Stairs are badly designed (you can't kill slimes in many cases) .
Maybe you should include cheat key for those who can't get to higher level but want to see what happens next (not in the real version, only for Ludum Dare).
Just letting you know that the game does not play on the itch.io client, likely because you haven't marked it as Windows-compatible. Tag me if you fix it and I'll give your game a shot.
@cerno-b I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but I've now tagged both files as Windows-compatible as you said. Hope this works!
Yep, that resolved it, thanks. If you don't tag it as Windows compatible, it won't install on the itch.io client (https://itch.io/app). Now it works. I'll try to give your game a shot before the deadline if there's time.
@cerno-b Nice!
Neat little game you made there. I especially like the graphics.
I would like point out a few things that could be improved:
- My main criticism would be balancing the exp. The game makes very slow progress and feels very grindy. After a few attempts I wasn't able to get past level 2. Maybe level up the character faster and make the fights a bit more challenging/interesting.
- The upgrade in level 2 was a nice surprise, but it didn't really give any advantage over the monsters. The horizontal air slide looks cool for sure, but it requires airborne monsters to feel justified. Maybe there are more monster types later in the game but I didn't meet them.
- The jumping physics could be improved a bit. I noticed that you implemented dynamic jump height, which is very cool, but I think it may require some tweaking since short key presses already result in a pretty high jump.
- There probably wasn't enough time to introduce more monsters, but I think a larger game world with sections inhabited by different monsters would be a great extension. That way you could have the harder monsters in later sections which would require the player to level up in order to beat them. Also it would add to the feeling of adventure if the player was able to explore the game world more. Even if time was an issue, a cheap cop-out would have been to add differently colored monsters with different stats. I would assume increasing the world size is just a matter of adding more tiles, right?
Overall I think you laid some pretty good ground work so I would encourage you to continue working on this game and keep adding content.
Fun game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 40 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzMlvyUelZw
@cerno-b Thanks for the advice! There were actually a flying alien, but you had to go to the surface in order to encounter it.
