LD29 — Beneath the Surface

The Valley Rule by Raiyumi 2014-05-02T14:35:00

This was a very aesthetically beautiful game. The gameplay was not the most original I've seen; this is a platformer, and didn't really add anything completely new. However, the music, the athmosphere, the concept, the take on the theme and all of those things were great (don't forget the beautiful art)!
This was made in three days? Well, you did use Stencyl just like me, but wow. Good job!

I played through the entire game, and I enjoyed all of it :3

Dynamole by Zanzlanz 2014-05-02T14:55:00

This was a small and simple, yet entertaining game. Well done :D

Life Beneath The Surface by xk 2014-05-02T15:07:00

This is an interesting game that captures the theme of the LD very well. The ending is, well.... Let's not spoil it. I just wanna say, good job ;)
The art and the music are cool as well :D

Doug: A Miner Inconvenience by Aaants 2014-05-02T16:13:00

This was an entertaining game to play. I like the gameplay, as well as most other aspects. Good luck!

Mask by Mnemusyne 2014-05-02T16:46:00

This was a pretty original game, and a wery odd one at that. I liked the mood, and the fact that the game was so simple. Well done ;)

The God Underneath by sam101 2014-05-02T16:23:00

A pretty fun game. This is probably really fun to play with friends through skype too. Really good job with making a mulitplayer mode. It would've been fun with a local mode too though.

GOod job!

Series Of Choices by joe40001 2014-05-07T00:19:00

I played your game, and I thought it was really good :3
I didn't beat all the hardcore levels, but I came close.

The graphics are good, even if there's nothing really special about them. The sounds are fine, as is the music. I especially like the audio at the rewind screen :D

A few things of mention:

1. I didn't really like the jumping mechanic that much. In my opinion, it forced the direction too much. What I mean is, when you press a directional arrow key and up at the same time and then let go, you'll still move much to the side. This is difficult when it comes to precision, which is probably the main reason I didn't feel like beating all the hardcore scenes XD

2. When you die, it would be nice if you could just double tap 'enter', instead of reaching for the 'R' :p

3. I feel like five seconds is a pretty long time to wait after each death. I'd say that 3 is enough for everyone to get ready :)

Otherwise, this was an awesome game. I can see how SpeedRunners has inspired this.

This isn't the first game to use a similar mechanic (rewinding), but it was a well made one!

The simple elements of the enemies and hazards worked well. Some times, you had to be pretty precise with your movements, but I managed.

Well done, and good luck! :'D

Series Of Choices by joe40001 2014-05-07T10:49:00

Well, I'd certainly be interested is such a version, if it's well done :p
If this smaller LD project can be so entertaining, a more ambitious game with some more time put into it, as well as more gaming elements should be a lot of fun. So I'd say yeah for sure XD

Moai by Satyre 2014-05-13T18:43:00

Overall, this was a fun game, and a good time waster, at least for a little while.
It forced me to abandon my mousepad for a while, and go after my almost never used USB-mouse...
I think the interpretation of the theme was easy to understand. Everything from audio to art worked well too. The original version is a especially difficult, but that's always good for a challenge.

Good job!

Beneath Your House by ceosol 2014-05-02T15:34:00

Alright. I finally got the time to play your game. It's pretty simple, but that's not necessarily a bad thing at all. The graphics could've been better, but they did what they were there for. They were much more professional than mine at least.

As all the others, I liked the sound effects XD
You captured the theme. One issue I'm having is that the gampelay became a bit boring after a while. It would have fun to have seen more elements and mechanics put in to play as you progressed. Still, the game was decent, and pretty enjoyable.

Good job!

Fake Zoo by v3games 2014-05-02T16:43:00

This was a weird, yet oddly entertaining game :/
I kinda liked it, hahha! Good job ;)

Under Soul by CastEclipse 2014-05-02T14:21:00

Alright. I already left you a comment on Newgrounds too, but I'll sum it up here. I liked the game. The mechanics weren't the most original, but you put your own spin to it. The theme, mood and concept were pretty cool, as was the music!
This was a pretty fun game; good job!

Drop Up by Shadow Dreamer 2014-04-29T09:51:00

Thanks, ceosol! Yeah, the spike detection might be a bith sensitive, but I'm glad you liked it anyway! I figured I should compose pretty dark music, since the mood isn't really that happy in the game :p

Would the theme have been contrast, this would indeed have been a fitting game. Then again, I probably never would have thought of making this game, if that'd been the case... The first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the theme was to have a character that did something "beneath" the original one :)

Again, thanks for playing! I'll try your game out as soon as I have time!

Drop Up by Shadow Dreamer 2014-04-30T17:04:00

Thanks, both of you. I think you might be right about the speed increase. Too much, and I would have to completely redo the levels, but I think that increasing the speed just a little would've actually made this game easier!
It's too late now though, but I'll think about it if I ever make something similar!

I have to admit that I made the game too difficult, especially considering the reflexes and/or practice needed for some levels XD

Drop Up by Shadow Dreamer 2014-05-02T00:07:00

Thanks, Sam! I agree with you about how frustrating this can get. Also, since the movement is a bit slow, failing will mean a greater punishment, which isn't always that fun...
I'm glad you like most of the aspects! I'll make sure to check your game out whenever I get time ;)

Drop Up by Shadow Dreamer 2014-05-02T14:28:00

Thank you Simon :D
I can see how this reminded you of "VVVVVV" for sure!
Personally, this reminds me of "SHIFT" :3

Drop Up by Shadow Dreamer 2014-05-02T16:16:00

Thanks, you guys :p

@FGM, which level? Ahhh, my bad for not giving them numbers.

@v3games, wow, you're one of the better gamers I guess. Most people have said that this game got far too challenging far too fast :p

I feel the ball should've been slightly faster too. Thanks for the comments and for the reviews!

Drop Up by Shadow Dreamer 2014-05-06T23:23:00

@joe40001

I'm glad to see you liked it :D
And thanks for playing all the way to the end o.O!

And yes, I definitely would've wanted to include more stuff in the end! But I couldn't do it in the 30 minutes I had left, sadly :(

Behind that black box there actually IS a secret level, that is very simple. There's no reward for beating it though :( Well, on Newgrounds you get an extra medal. The only thing that happens is that you're sent back to the main menu once you beat it.

I have an interesting idea too, which I'd like to do sometime long after the competition. I'd like to include a whole other set of levels for those who beat the secret level. The gravity would be reversed, and it'll be all about getting back up again! :D
After that I'd have a proper ending too :3

The hitbox is too big, but the issue is slightly larger than that. To begin with, I only used rectangles as hitboxes for the spikes. I never had time to fix that... I almost think I should've quickly made the rectangles a bit smaller :/

The speed should probably be tweaked a bit too :p

Thanks a lot for your comment!

Drop Up by Shadow Dreamer 2014-05-14T09:48:00

@Satyre

Thanks for playing my game XD!
As for the deeper message, there really isn't too much of one. I would actually have wanted to add a second (secret) part of the game, where you go back up again, with a more proper ending :p
I didn't have time though, so I figured I'd end the game with a black screen, as every level only gets darker. I guess my main idea was this:
In the game, the character clearly has a desire to go deeper and deeper, but for every time the ball succeeds, it also gets darker. In the end, its desire has lead to nothing but darkness.
Metaphorically, you could see this as a way of saying not to become too obsessed with something, whatever it is, as the obsession might swallow you completely and ruin all other aspects of your life :3

Focus Shift by ForeignGuyMike 2014-05-02T16:37:00

This was a very good game. I'v seen similar ones before, but this was just really entertaining. I love the oldschool feel too! The level designs were all good, as was most of the other aspects. Well done, or should I say, well played ;)

Drowning in Problems by Notch 2014-05-02T14:41:00

I enjoyed this little game more than I thought was possible. Well done, once again ;)
Since you finished so early, it'd been interesting to see you make some music though!
Maybe next time :3

Sub Terraria Zero by Photon 2014-05-02T16:01:00

Well. Overall, this was a pretty good game. I liked the weapons, the graphics, the mood, the take on the theme as well as the audio. I've seen more original games, but I haven't made more original games myself, so that doesn't really say much. This was pretty fun. I would've played this 'til the end, but after a while, the game kinda crashed.
I uploaded a password protected image here: http://imgh.us/Beta_Testing_2.png (STZCrash). I jumped on the first purplish enemy I saw, and after that, the game kept going but I couldn't move nor shoot or anything like that. I don't know if you knew about this issue, or if you want to fix it after the contest, but oh well.

This was a fun game; well done, and good luck! :D

Au dela by Simon 2014-05-02T16:29:00

Interesting game. You made me go after my mouse, as this was not optimal for my mousepad XD

Good job!

Lux by Shadow Dreamer 2015-08-25T15:24:00

@Shaw

Thanks, dude! Glad to hear you like it. Your game is awesome as well, btw!

@mantis

Thanks, dude! I wish there were more levels too, but I just started studying at a university, in the middle of the competition, so there are a lot of things I didn't have time to do :(

@chromebookbob

Thank you! I guess that could work for some level designs, but with the current ones, some levels would be unbeatable, and you wouldn't have time to see the "monster" :D

Lux by Shadow Dreamer 2015-08-28T20:43:00

@bigbuggames

Thanks! Hopefully I will, once I get the time ;)

@DruhinM

Thanks a lot!

@SeaMonster131

Thank you :3

@Connor

It still runs for me, which means it's probably something with your system (it shouldn't load longer than 10-30 seconds, depending on your system). Did you try different browsers? Did you try removing cookies?
The game actually has a legit loading screen, but for some reason, itch.io compresses the files in such a way that it won't show, which is why you can't see that it's loading. But if you really waited that long, you could try several things (like updating your flash player).

I'll play all of your games when I get the time, probably tomorrow! Thanks for the feedback ;)

Pretty neat game! It has some minor things you could improve, but in general, it's pretty solid, and the concept is cool. For 72 hours, it's awesome!
Great job ;)
