LD55 — Summoning

Ritual of Ribbit by manabreak 2024-04-21T05:19:14Z

I was not expecting a mini metroidvania! This game is really fun, and the spells are great. I loved the few times I saw an impassable obstacle (eg. ledge too high), then found a spell to overcome it (eg. summon trampoline). Then, when I got flip gravity it felt great because the lava pools and slimes that used to be tricky with stones and jumping are now easy. The spiky tunnel was a great final platforming challenge before the boss. I also enjoyed the combination of spells used in the fight, it's just sad the trampoline didn't get a go :( I just wish the spells were easier to cast. Instead of zipping around the boss room flipping gravity and summoning rocks and dancing around the boss, I was running around the ceiling dropping blocks when the boss stopped and before he fired. Perhaps Z, X, and C for each spell would have been easier. Other than that, great game!

Seance by alexrose 2024-04-19T09:50:27Z

This is an amazing game, and I'm glad I took the time to finish it instead of playing other games. The voice acting and music was amazing (I loved the shift in tone during a seance), and the art is really good. By the end lighting the candles was starting to get tedious - especially when switching back and forth between people, but not ridiculously boring. I noticed two small issues with the graphics: 1. There's no custom characters for "!" and numbers, and 2. SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE REST OF THIS REVIEW

When talking to Aria about candles she says "like the ones you have here". The right candle is short and stubby and doesn't look much like a church candle any more. The left candle looks more like what I'd expect, but unfortunately the notepad covers most of it. Maybe it could be moved further left, or even removed for this final stretch of the game where we don't need it any more, just so we can see the candles in all their glory.

I started to cotton on to the ending at the line about the height of the killer, and I especially liked the pig and sheep on the Ouija board. I especially liked the lines from the victims which were reminiscent of what they actually said, it really helped with the idea that Baphomet was sort of controlling the player (or at least messing with their head). The changing image of the detective was great, and the application closing was really impactful for some reason: Did I die? Was my mind completely taken over by Baphomet? Something else?

This game is insane for a game jam, and I definitely need to replay it to see all the foreshadowing. It seems like some secret good ending (maybe a new game + exclusive if saving is implemented) would fit perfectly in a good release. Maybe there is one that I missed. Great job, an almost perfect score!

Keyboard Warrior by TolMera 2024-04-28T08:08:08Z

This is a cool game, I especially liked the background art. I felt that the lack of backspace made it less of a game and more of a strict typing challenge/test. In combination with the lenient timer (I finished most in ~30 seconds), I got very mixed signals. This mispunctuation and miscapitalisation axes of the diagram didn't work, and all the colours were the same (The diagram is a great idea though, and to see the triangle getting bigger was very rewarding). The 'words per minute' counter also didn't work, or was counting minutes from some arbitrary point, not while I was typing. Overall, this was a great game and very impressive for a jam, I just wish there were some more interesting mechanics than just typing.

Sophia's Spirit Journey by ryusui 2024-04-29T07:53:05Z

This is a really impressive game, and there were a few great metroidvania moments which I loved. The horizontal vine/logs which you need the lightning for were a good tease, and the exit to that room was great to encourage me to go back (it would have been even better if there was some sort of one-way platform to trap you there). The way forward was only ever behind one branch, and there was usually only one way to go (Blocks needing the lightning head half a screen away from the branch to find it). This is fine for a jam game, and without a map a more dense, interconnected world would have just been painful, but in future it would be cool to see this expand into a more fully-fledged metroidvania. I also found the switching heads mechanic tricky to do quickly, perhaps using a different button to equip each head instead of scrolling, but I'm not too sure. Great job!

Sick of Summoning by cheesepencil 2024-04-21T05:04:05Z

This is really cool! I felt like there wasn't much of a difficulty curve with the randomness - my first round I only ever got one or two fireballs on the screen at once, but after that I had up to four I think. I also found out the hitbox behind the player extends far beyond the sprite, so you can be standing your own width away from a fireball and still die. A 3 lives health system might make the game feel more fair. Great job!

The Sorcerat by JamieOK 2024-04-20T23:43:34Z

I enjoyed this game. I liked having a group of rats running around with me, so it was sad when I had to leave them on a button. The gate puzzle was the best, but the dialogue unfortunately spoiled it. I also managed to skip the see-saw by just walking straight across it. This felt like the introduction/tutorial for a really good puzzle game - I now know the main mechanics: leaving rats on buttons, guiding rats through small spaces I can't reach, and using rats to weigh down objects so I can walk on them. It would be cool to see some more advanced puzzles combining these mechanics, maybe with another flag to have multiple groups of rats at once. The boss fight was funny, and it would be cool to see other enemies which the rats attack. I did start to get bored with the slow movement speed. This is still very impressive for a jam game, and would be a good start for a full game!

Denimancers: You Reap what you Sew by Riley Miller 2024-04-21T04:55:46Z

This is a great game! The story text scrolled a bit too fast, and it would have been nice to have the tutorial text here as well so I don't get attacked while reading it. The gem upgrades were surprising (in a really good way) for a jam game, and the health and mana pools looked great. I found there were a lot of health potions I didn't need. I also summoned a heap of pants near the boss and like smilewood said didn't realise I needed to 'capture' enemies to deal damage. I felt like at the end I was running around to find more enemies and not focusing on the boss, so I sort of just won out of nowhere (maybe have the boss healthbar be in the UI, not floating next to him? idk). I also got a lot of lag when the screen was covered in pants. Overall a good, fun game.

Barshen Breakout by Bloodbane 2024-04-19T10:04:14Z

This was pretty fun. The controls took a bit of getting used to, but I sort of got the hang of them. I think the animations on the axe weren't great and I didn't see a need to use it. I died a lot in the second fight by falling onto the spikes (an insta kill and complete restart seems harsh). I eventually realised I only had to do the summoning sigil right next to the walls, so I skipped the rest to save health (I do like how you get gems AND health from killing baddies). I made it to the boss fight, and kept getting hit by the missile attacks. Some sort of telegraphing to show when they're coming (and from what side) would make it more fun, at least from my perspective. Overall, a good game!

Cat Named Lemmy by Danonino 2024-04-20T23:29:32Z

I enjoyed this game, but didn't finish it because it got tedious (as explained above). Another way to deal with this might be an option to finish the level once the required cats have been saved, instead of waiting for the rest to be saved or die. It wasn't clear what the windows logo looking pickups did, so I just skipped them. The lighting looked great, and the contrast of amazing lighting with dodgy pixel art was great. Good game!

Number of the Beast by animawish 2024-04-21T04:41:54Z

This looks like a good game, but unfortunately I couldn't finish it. The sheer quantity of slides provided and red-herring instructions in the book made it a really daunting task. I started again while writing this, and realised the puzzles appear to be procedurally generated - which is very cool and impressive for a jam! I feel like this would be a great game if it had some smaller introductory puzzles (maybe with a smaller rulebook) before the main ones. I failed twice, but with no feedback as to what I got wrong I didn't feel encouraged to go for a third try. This game is staying in my downloads folder so I can come back to it after rating more games. This is a great concept, and a pretty decent execution.

Vampire Summoners by DenisMarasan 2024-04-17T08:14:48Z

Good fun! I think the core idea is really great. I enjoyed being able to balance my own difficulty - starting off slow and summoning more at once to try for a high score. Slightly more attention to detail would have gone a long way: seeing how long until the bomb explodes, a more clear indication of enemy health and how they attack you, and maybe a wider camera to keep track of more enemies at once. I felt like I was walking around randomly - anywhere the enemies weren't. The fruit was a good incentive, and maybe pickups to reduce cooldowns or increase health could help even more. Overall, this was a really fun game.

Telefrag Trouble by Ned Murry 2024-04-22T07:57:53Z

@cheesepencil Thanks for playing. On my display the text is in the top corners, so I think my Godot camera skills could do with some improvement. The A """I""" is essentially attack the nearest tower unless an enemy of the opposite type is close enough, then attack them. If you summon an enemy on top of another, they both die (as @wouterk12 did). I made all the sprites myself with very little experience, so thanks for the feedback :)
