LD21 — Escape

Esca by tnelsond 2011-09-03T19:14:00

Phew! The last lot of flapping was very very very hard (it's not an easy word to type!) but I finished the game and 'escaped'. A cool idea, the hints dotted around the level were very helpful. I liked the way you could e.g. move around slowly or quickly depending on how you typed the word. Didn't really fit the theme, I'm afraid, but still a nice concept.

Flee Buster by ChevyRay 2011-08-23T12:44:00

Wow! So much fun to play. I love the graphics and sound and the personality they give the game. The controls on the ship game are sweet, too - super responsive. The switching between minigames really adds to the sense of urgency whilst escaping (also, knowing you only have one chance to do it!) Great stuff.

Qua-tzar by zazery 2011-09-03T19:58:00

Nice concept and implementation. As others said, online multiplayer or AI would be neat, but hey you only had 48 hours! Nice graphics. I didn't really get the difference between the Tzars and the Doms...

Rainbow Jail by Benjamin 2011-09-03T19:30:00

Difficult, but really cool. Love the graphics, animations, the style and the gameplay mechanic! Brilliant stuff!

Caved In by alexlarioza 2011-08-23T11:24:00

I really like this game - love the graphical style, and it's a fun, quick play. My only problem is I've still not managed to build a wall (just doesn't seem to work!), which has meant each of my play sessions has been fairly short if a cave-in sets off lava or water!

Caved In by alexlarioza 2011-08-23T11:28:00

Hmm, did just build some walls, but it seemed random when it worked and when it didn't! Got to level 3 that time, and I want to keep playing :)

The Legend of Shoe by Alexbrainbox 2011-08-26T06:56:00

Not really an 'escape' game, as such? I like the multi-screen mechanism, but found the controls and some of the level design to be a bit infuriating (took me ages to realise you can double-jump, and I couldn't get it to work every time!). Unfortunately, I didn't make it to the boss, but I kept playing for a good while to try and get there.

Metal Sphere Solid by matthias_zarzecki 2011-08-24T21:20:00

Great game! Absolutely gorgeous graphics, love the lighting. Music was nice, pity there weren't any sound effects! The controls were good but felt perhaps a little more sluggish than I'd like. I like the mashup of ball-rolling maze game and stealth action - great stuff! :)

Fireflies by Winterblood 2011-08-23T13:22:00

A nice game, but unfortunately I guess it's more of a tech demo than a full game! I really like the graphical style, but as you admit yourself it's rather light on the content. I managed to escape from the level on both sides, too. Keep going with it, though!

The Trap by gufftan 2011-08-23T12:53:00

A nice little platformer! I like the sound effects and the droning background music - made it feel nicely claustrophobic. The pink laser beams were a little unforgiving in their collision detection. The jumping puzzles and level design were good, although the overall setting felt a little contrived / unexplained - why is there a secret underground lair that only contains spike pits and pools of deadly acid?! The ending was a bit abrupt, too, but I guess that's short time limits for you. Nice work! :)

Stranded: Episode 1 by Tulrath 2011-08-24T21:01:00

Not a bad idea for a game, although it felt only loosely connected to the theme via the scientists' story :) Would be nice to see some more variation in gameplay - I liked the introduction of moving targets!

Super Kommandant Exteme by Nothing Games 2011-08-24T21:52:00

Interesting idea, and I like the way the searchlights work. However, I found it far too difficult overall - there really seems to be no easy way to keep an eye over the whole compound and stop people escaping... or perhaps I'm just not very good at it!

Tiny Mansion Escape by TaslemGuy 2011-08-24T20:34:00

A neat little game (little being the key word! - I know it's 'tiny', but a 2x zoom on the graphics would've been nice perhaps. Nice mechanics and gameplay. I would also like to have seen a little more storytelling - why am I here? Where is here?

Ernest the Plump Adventurer (in trouble) by agersant 2011-09-03T20:14:00

Wow! Love love love the pixel art and the music. Really stylish, and very polished. I felt like I was doublejumping for every single jump, which was a little odd - would perhaps be better if jump height was dependent on how long you hold down jump for, perhaps (Mario style). Otherwise, really impressive.

Virus Upload by Retroid 2011-08-24T20:45:00

A neat idea, but sadly let down by a lot of technical issues. For me, the intro to the game ran very slowly, and it just hung on the 'uploading virus' screen for a *long* time. Also, it repeated quit back to the menu screen on me - I'm not sure if this was supposed to be the 'user' pressing the escape key? If so, it would be nice to have a countdown timer or something, and it would be nice if you could just restart the level rather than whole game! Enough of my whining though, I like the concept behind it.

Daring Do! by jwfrosty 2011-08-25T15:47:00

jonbro: I know what you mean. I think the latter two levels are a bit more frantic, but the first one is a bit of a stroll in the park. I want to add more gameplay elements (more traps), perhaps alternative routes through the level, etc, which I think should help. I think the lack of sound effects for the main character's footsteps and the rolling boulder leave a big gap, too - I'm going to add these in in the update I'm working on. In particular, I think it'd be neat if the boulder is louder the closer it is to you.

Daring Do! by jwfrosty 2011-09-01T11:24:00

Rudy: Thanks for your comment! :)
I've already 'fixed' arrows in my post-Dare version of the game - in the LD version, they kill you no matter how you collide with them (i.e. you die if you land on top of one), but I've now made it so they only kill you if you hit them front-on. Makes things quite a bit easier.

As for more variety in temples - definitely! I'd like to add a range of extra traps and environments. Perhaps sandy desert temples, planty jungle temples, rocky lava temples, etc!

Land of Colors by ZirconCode 2011-09-03T20:03:00

Really nice concept and gameplay - infuriating, though! :)
Whilst I congratulate you at having a go at making some music, I congratulate you even more for letting us mute it! ;) Strangely, Java (and the music) kept running even after I'd closed the tab...

EscApe by marudziik 2011-08-25T18:40:00

Really impressive - especially considering it's your first graphical game, first time with AS3 and flashpunk, and first time with Ogmo! Great stuff! I'd agree with others tha tthe controls are a little twitchy - makes it very hard to get around the level without knocking your health down, but otherwise it's great :) I recognised the big Ugh! influence! I used to love that game.

Ryan's Labrynth by RyanPridgeon 2011-09-03T19:50:00

Really nice engine, and I like the simple graphics. I really really like the field-of-view mechanic, too, where only the areas of the map that you can 'see' are shown. Getting killed was a bit too harsh, as it took a long time to get back to where you were.

Hollow by Connor 2011-08-24T21:51:00

Great game! Cool graphical style - reminds me of Miyazaki films (Nausicaa, Mononoke, etc). I love the dive mechanic too.

Charge by thasc 2011-09-03T18:01:00

Took me a few goes to 'escape' (I'm afraid I have to agree with others that the theme is kind of shoehorned in there) - it's an interesting idea and the animation is really smooth. I found the controls pretty difficult, though.

I'd suggest two alterations:
1) keep the player contained within the play area (i.e. you can't go offscreen - at least not top and bottom)
2) start off with levels with less other particles. Perhaps even some with preset particles fixed in place, that teach you how to repel / attract yourself across the stage.

Promising start though!

BEF by Arowx 2011-08-25T06:44:00

I'm afraid I couldn't work out how to control this properly or really what I was supposed to be doing. I like the graphical style, though, and the minimap at the bottom is a really neat mechanic - just needs a bit more time on gameplay, I think!
