LD50 — Delay the inevitable

Block or Bust by 100th_Coin 2022-04-07T05:08:46Z

This style of humor is top tier to me - I love the writing in this game, from the vhs tape titles to the descriptions of the clothes. even the fact that you have to arbitrarily change into a different outfit to change between sections is fantastic.

The game too feels really fun to play! I didn't encounter any bugs or issues, and THANK YOU for not making the bone requirements too strict based on the number of dinosaurs and the bones they spawn. (Especially in that last stage!) Everything felt very user friendly and it eases you into the gameplay loop very well. If anything, I would have loved to get some more challenge if there were to be any further levels.

Final time was 7:26.25 for my first run, very fun entry and the quality of the writing, gameplay, art, and music is amazing for the 48 hours you had to work with as a team of one. Congrats!

Very nice game! The gameplay is fine enough as a clicker, but what really stands out here is how you subvert the typical absurdity of clicker games through the story elements, which is very effective and can come to a brutal end. The pixel art is also phenomenally done, the game looks absolutely stunning. I played through twice to see two endings. Definitely a very solid entry!

This is such a cool idea and it's executed very well! This game does risk/reward very well, as finding seashells is super important for letting you make mistakes and keep the water low. Feeling maybe some DemonCrawl inspiration?

The graphics are perfect for the overall mood and the game is presented in such a clean way, it really feels like a complete experience.

My best right now is 41, and while I do think there could maybe be some more mechanics to help with the longevity or to avoid repetitiveness, it's a very solid entry!

@nate954 I think the starfish indicator is a great solution! I think having column indicators by themselves at all times would be a bit too strong, so I'd agree if you went that route you might need to combine it with another ability of some sort.

Too Cute for Space Fights by YogurtTheHorse 2022-04-06T05:18:05Z

To echo a lot of feedback already, the art direction is incredible in this game! The team really nailed the chaotic feeling of being thrown into the middle of a hectic battle, and I love the idea of plugging into a variety of different tools to help repair the ship.

One thing that kind of confused me, though - I did a few runs and I'm not really sure what my frantic repairs are actually doing in terms of keeping the ship alive. The gameplay is really fun! I just don't really feel like I'm having an impact on whether the ship is living long or not. I'm assuming that having open cuts and fires is draining the ship's health faster, but if that's the case, since the health is displayed as individual hearts it's pretty hard to tell how fast that drain is happening.

Other than that I loved it! The music choice is amazing, and one thing I especially love about this is the way the map changes as the ship gets more and more damaged. Very nice entry!

This game is very good! It has quite the simple premise, but I love how you gradually introduce more mechanics to the decision making you have to do and by the end things get quite challenging to think about! It's amazing how your brain gets so confused after just a couple of concepts overlapping. Getting to see cute pets is always a bonus. Overall quite a solid game!

Erefos by exopunk 2022-04-06T06:25:21Z

This is pretty neat! This game has great atmosphere and I like the encroaching darkness idea - really encourages playing fast and using the dash as much as possible. All the checkpoints felt very fair which is great to keep things light in what is otherwise a pretty suffocating mechanic. The graphics are really nice and are perfect for the tone you are going for.

There were a few cases I found where the character would stop moving after landing, even when holding down a direction, which did kind of trip me up, but it wasn't a huge deal. Other than that, it felt quite good to play through! A pretty solid entry for the jam, well done!

Thanks for the feedback so far, everyone!

@juulh & @pixeltaku hmm yeah I am seeing the issue with the edge of the screen now - looks like it's mostly specific to hitting boxes whose corners are touching the edge of the screen. I had thought I fixed it (it used to be much easier to clip on the corner and die) but it looks like I need to revisit that interaction again. Thanks for pointing it out!

More music is definitely something that will be added (particularly it will change a couple times to match the new obstacles being introduced)

@lintfordpickle Thank you! You make a great point with the tutorial - I'll definitely update the graphic to make it a bit clearer. A click without moving the mouse is meant for small adjustments but that could also be indicated better. Thanks for the feedback!

@100th-coin Thanks for the feedback!

I love your idea to spice up the background a bit; yours is a perfect example of how to keep the aesthetic while also making it less bland. I'll do something like this for sure in future builds of the game.

I'm glad you found the progression and kind of gradual tutorial stuff effective! Keeping the two characters together is definitely sort of the intended thing I wanted players to realize. The idea was to have players figure out that working together in unison makes things so much easier, which also fits into the story themes. However, one of the features that unfortunately did NOT make it in is a mechanic that kills the players if they get too close together! (This is when the relationship starts to go further downhill.) I'm really sad I didn't have the time to work it into the game itself, as I think it really drives home the story mood towards the end, and I wanted players to feel that difficulty from losing the ability to keep them clustered and together.

@crotonyl-alcohol - Thanks for the feedback - implementing saving would be nice and is on my todo list, but deaths should currently just restart the level, not the entire game. Unless you're closing the game multiple times I don't think you should need to start all over? Either way I will be adding automatic saving in the future so hopefully that will be nicer. Thanks for playing at least!

@klianc09 - That's a good point on the tutorial- I plan on making that a bit clearer in the future, as there have been a couple mentions of the tutorial not being as good as it could be.

I'm actually glad you figured out the strategy of grouping the characters together - a lot of the features that I was sadly unable to add do involve forcibly splitting up the characters to up the challenge later. Unfortunately I ran out of time to really get to those, which makes me very sad especially as those mechanics would go along with the story of the game better towards the end

What, You APE? by PixelTaku 2022-04-11T01:36:48Z

I absolutely love how this game fits into the theme, it's a very good take and you do a good job translating it into a game for this jam! I had a lot of fun with it, I like endless runners in general. I do wish there was a bit more variation as the loops continue, my first run did around 3 loops before I died. For what's there though, it's pretty nice! The humor of the scenario is top notch and I like the graphics for the characters as well.

[Don't] Prune the Money Tree by Orionhart 2022-04-11T00:11:05Z

This is a super unique game and it plays very well! Graphics and music are both excellent, and I like the graphical touches added to purchasing upgrades.

I also think it would be nice if there was a way to see some more information on the main screen without having to switch screens, but that could also be an intentional choice in terms of management so I could see it going either way.

I do wish there was a bit more variety to the nature of different upgrades, but considering the timeframe of the jam, what's there is great. I played a few runs but wasn't able to get TOO far, so I might also be missing any of the later upgrades. It's an interesting sort of 'simulation' type of game

Lost in Time by arthurr 2022-04-07T05:44:12Z

This is a pretty nice game! I like platformers a lot and it seems like a fun level! I agree that it's quite difficult, but I do like how it encourages you to move quickly and as you die more and more you start to learn the best way to move through the traps.

The music and graphics are quite nice too, overall very impressive that this came together in just 2 days.

I do think some of things you have to wait on could be sped up a bit, such as the moving butterfly at the start and those moving platforms later in the level - for those, if you get there just a second too late, you're kind of just stuck for a while without much to do while the time keeps ticking down. Maybe if it only started moving when you stepped onto it?

Overall a nice entry, congrats on finishing!

DO NOT Explode by Zyang 2022-04-11T04:49:45Z

This game is super super cool. I love the core idea behind this, collecting clocks to outlast your opponents who start out with longer fuses. The unique weapons and objects adds another layer of fun to this game as well and really elevates it and keeps it from being too repetitive. There were a few times that I think I died due to just not really seeing any clocks close to me in the later levels but those were rare and it didn't matter too much. Overall fantastic work for the jam! This is a great foundation

Corgi, Protecc! by JuulH 2022-04-06T04:20:20Z

This is a pretty fun game! Everything looks and feels great. I also took a couple minutes to see the minimap which definitely makes it a lot easier to keep track of what's going on. I like the risk/reward present in choosing your upgrade options, and I really like the little quips from the owner inside. Nice job to the team!
