LD46 — Keep it alive

Keep It Alive by Pennycook 2020-04-23T03:34:49Z

Ah, I remember my first LD after becoming a parent. I only managed to get the core mechanic and didn't even manage to turn it into a game. It was fun trying to find the sweet spot before running out of time, doing talk options. I ran it to 165 days once I found a steady state just to explore the talk options. Nice job for such limited time!

Flower Dreams by BradCode 2020-04-21T08:06:39Z

@endurion I really did want a different sound for the collecting. I even spent time working on one, but had to give up due to time and fall back to bfxr just to have something at all. I don't own a nice bronze bell to record

Flower Dreams by BradCode 2020-04-21T08:08:59Z

@maverick95 you should have heard it before I clamped the pitch increase on combos. If you scored more than 6 flowers it was ear-splitting. I tried to aim for something that ended up sounding like a chord, but maybe I needed to clamp it down even a bit more or start lower.

Flower Dreams by BradCode 2020-04-23T03:15:58Z

@bereg Yeah, I had considered doing more explanation, but I thought it might spoil some of the fun of trying to figure out how it works. Maybe I could have a "gardening book" you can consult if you felt like you needed some extra help. Thanks for the feedback!

Flower Dreams by BradCode 2020-04-25T21:59:32Z

@cadstor I almost busted out my guitar to try to make some kind of track, but didn't feel like I had time to get to something that wouldn't be too repetitive.

Flower Dreams by BradCode 2020-05-16T04:28:40Z

@andrfw Thank you so much for this comment. Reading this really made my day!

Extinction Intervention by rosypenguin 2020-04-21T05:00:03Z

The dinosaurs wanted to go extinct as far as I can tell. I managed to save 1, but many did it try to stop me. Who runs towards a tsunami? really. The art is fantastic. So much frantic clicking. Nice job!

HexaSlime by comatomatoes 2020-04-20T04:42:51Z

Hey! This is pretty neat! I really enjoy Go, so I'm always happy to try a board game experiment like this. I think this could translate pretty well to something physical, with low tiles and high walls running between pegs. Track health with dice maybe? One major difference between this and Go is that you really seem to suffer if you spread out your blobs. I like how cutting impacts enemy blob health and how dead areas actually block out the space, so the game tends towards a conclusion over time. I'd have to play a couple more times to really understand the strategies here, which is a good sign! Nice job!

EPS - Endangered Psychic Species by fjfnaranjo 2020-04-24T03:15:42Z

Overall, quite nice. I was very confused initially when trying to play this as if it were a single player experience. I guess I missed that in the original text, oops! I like the asymmetry and the humor. There's clearly a lot of art and sound that went into this as well. One suggestion I have would be for Richard to have some kind of idea which direction the helicopter is in and to change the start and helicopter positions randomly. It feels a little unfair for Richard to not have as obvious a way to pursue their goal than the alien. Nice job!

MAKE A WISH - A Star Journey by MAYFury 2020-04-21T04:30:57Z

Feels like a meditation in some way. I hope you get to read everyone's wishes. Nice music track and pretty art. I always appreciate when someone does something unexpected. 9/3 wishes.

Lemons! by funisfun8 2020-04-21T04:16:04Z

I think you might have a bug in the windows build. I bought the bridge and clicked confirm, but the game doesn't start.

Brawnfire by bitdecay 2020-04-21T04:23:44Z

I had fun with that. Thanks for making it! Cute pixel art. When the fireman came on and started spraying water, I was like 'WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT, CANT YOU SEE THERE ARE ZOMBIES!?'. I had trouble throwing things into the fire from the sides and eventually would only throw up or down. Could probably make it a bit easier for things to land in the fire. I'm also assuming you can't attack up or down and can only attack left or right. Took me a bit to get used to it. Would love to see some more hit effects on the punches so you can really feel when you're smacking something around. I like that you can't stop the zombies except by throwing them in the fire. All in all, nice job!

Extreme Gardening by lilwavep 2020-04-21T03:42:03Z

Nice job!

Feeding Time! by Drachmor 2020-04-20T03:24:53Z

Some instructions on how to run a jar file might help more people to try this out!

Feeding Time! by Drachmor 2020-04-20T03:58:58Z

After installing java and with a bit of creative keyboard remapping on my weird ergonomic keyboard, I was able to feed all my plump babies :) Nice job! I liked how the bottle doubled as a movement mechanic.

Feeding Time! by Drachmor 2020-04-20T04:01:14Z

One thing that would make the milk shot movement a bit more intuitive would be to use the direction from the player's ground position to the target position rather than the offset jump position. I had to train myself for horizontal boosts to aim "up" a bit to deal with the difference in the aim caused by the jump itself.

Penguin March by ilPrinny 2020-04-20T05:02:15Z

Very cute. I like the Oregon Trail being applied to a penguin journey. I wish that it left my score up on the end game screen after I finished. It seemed like I should always fast march (I started with more morale than food). Seems like the only difference was that fast march consumed morale? I liked the little story events. Would be cool to have more of them with interesting choices. I was kind of expecting morale to tank whenever population was lost, but there didn't seem to be a link there. Anyhow, nice job!

The Hatchling by TommySays 2020-04-24T03:32:03Z

Lots of nice execution touches in the research menu, generous hit areas on melee attacks. I think the game would feel a bit smoother if you could avoid locking the character as much during attacks. I often would attack or fire in the wrong direction because I was attacking and trying to change facing in the middle. I'd also like to be able to aim my magic with the mouse, but maybe that would be too strong. Felt like melee attack damage was the best stat to level up by far. Nice job!

Slimekeep by BenBonk 2020-04-21T03:49:43Z

Pushed my luck super far and started blasting. The most zoomed out camera feels like cheating, haha. I didn't realize I couldn't walk through voids and got myself trapped! Nice job, was fun. Interesting to switch from endless pacifist kiting to attacking like crazy. The dash is a good touch for an extra skill component.

My Pet's Dungeon by N.O. Games 2020-04-21T04:02:16Z

I really enjoyed this. I played a half a dozen runs and, of course, my best run ended with my pet ignoring my commands to FLEEEEEEEE. Could definitely see expanding this concept. Also, oh my, you are a bad pet owner. How many pets do you send into a dungeon full of monsters. whyyyyyyy. Nice Job!

Buddy Rope by mbc 2020-04-20T03:09:59Z

Nice job! I like the giant pet for the little person. Very cute. It gets a little tiring to press the space bar so much, but it does give you the sense of having to get the pair to cooperate (vs the pet just automatically hopping every now and then).

Gizmick! by Zliebowitz 2020-04-25T19:55:07Z

This was a nice little boss rush game. I found that my best strategy was to just run around on the ground and sword attack. There's probably some more tuning you could do here to give the bosses clearer telegraphing on their attacks and weaknesses. For example, you could have the first boss stay on screen if its going to slam down and bounce back up faster than you can attack, but then fly off screen and slam down faster before stopping for a minute to be vulnerable after the slam. I think the first boss's health was also a bit high. It took a lot of hitting and waiting to defeat them. I like all your art and music. Having some destruction effects when the boss is defeated would also make beating them feel a lot more satisfying. Nice job!

HiJinx by DarriasArt 2020-04-20T03:14:03Z

I think you may have a bug in your input code. I'm unable to jump with Spacebar or the A key.

Edit: I was able to play using an xbox360 controller

HiJinx by DarriasArt 2020-04-20T03:32:07Z

It's quite challenging! I wish there was a little bit more forgiveness around getting hit by the crows, but at the same time, I can see that being part of what makes the game what it is. Nice job! Did you write the music?

Doggo Defense by FizzyApple12 2020-04-21T04:43:49Z

Win64 build worked fine for me. Nice job! Lots of style packed into the transitions. I wish I could tell where the dog was a bit better. Seemed like maybe it was stacked on top of me? I didn't quite understand how to make sure bullets didn't hit the dog.

Planet Parasites by Danilo Sadzinski 2020-04-20T04:15:17Z

I see what you did there. Nice job! I defeated the giant yellow haired boss before having to step away from the computer. With no way to pause, I was unable to save the planet :P I'm impressed with the variety of content you managed to create in such a short period. One thing that might help with the feel of the game would be to have there be some kind of hit-react frame on the enemies to make it a bit more satisfying when your shots connect. Even just a little jiggle would go along way, if not some actual knockback. Maybe just a side effect of spamming bees?

Flower Defense by Evolving 2020-04-20T04:21:34Z

Nice Job! I really like the pixel art for everything. I agree that the split between things attacking you and attacking the flower is good. I think the hit area for the sword is a bit on the small side. I was having trouble hitting things sometimes.

Creature Coraller by brzyrt 2020-04-21T04:36:58Z

Nice job! Having to reload meant you have to make trade-offs between accuracy and speed. I liked the animation of the brown blobs when they chew on the creature.

Luna The Woodcutter by Floxnu 2020-04-21T03:36:16Z

It's a nice environment, with relaxing music. In one of my later plays, I hit a bug: after exiting to the main menu accidentally and then starting a new game, the camera got stuck. I think I also found a debug cheat to get a bunch of wood on the 1 key. In some ways this reminds me of Minit. You have a clock that limits your exploration and you have to always be stoking the fire and getting a little bit further each time. Nice job!

Sound Player by celvin 2020-04-21T04:12:19Z

Interesting concept. I like the idea of trying to figure out how to use a sound effect to trigger an action. I had a little bit of a struggle with using the sound effects in the right time in the right place. I would have liked to be able to position them in the air or move them around before I hit play without having to hit reset. Nice job!

Spoon by Cadstor 2020-04-25T19:44:44Z

Nice job! Some suggestions for improvements: If you make the main track's loop point match players won't notice when the music starts over. Some sounds for jumping and occasional noises from the ostrich would be nice, especially if they had some variety to avoid sounding repetitive. Games in this genre sometimes increase difficulty by adding obstacles you avoid by not jumping.
