Maaan I really wanted to have the remote on the phone, it sounded really cool, I couldn't get it to connect tho :(

I tried playing on keyboard but while the numbers work, the ASDF to pick colors didn't seem to do anything, for exemple I couldn't buy the sound effects in the commercial pages

@leophyte Thanks for trying it out and sorry for the problems! I already expected the gimmick to cause some problems, but it is a bad omen that it already fails in the first player πŸ˜„ Unfortunately I currently can't reproduce it, so I think I have to wait if it works for another person. Could you maybe tell me your browser and operating system?

pazio-di-dante 2026-10-19 09:35 ♥ 1

That is something! Didn't except to see something like this! Awesome

Teletext is finally back, and just how I remember it, even down to the subscriptions!

Very cool take on the theme. I think I found everything, I became a Tower of Hanoi master and did find out the truth behind the pyramids by winning the educational game (that made me laugh, that was great). Even got the red remote buttons that reduce eye strain (blue button buyers could never relate). And I found the :( at 666, very depressed satan.

It was very faithful to the original teletext (the little delay when you press stuff, that brought me back, the pyramid game just nostalgiabombed me), and of course making the phone involved as the remote was super cool and innovative. Everything looked just like the real thing as well, you really got the small nuances of for example the index screen right, awesome. So yeah, great job on this game, amazing take on the theme!

Didn't expect to see this, very cool take on the theme! The gimmick is interesting. I experienced some delay when inputting numbers, but that didn't impact the experience. The way you implemented the Hanoi Tower is really smart! Great entry!

Talk about original! Loved this!

foolishfool 2026-10-20 07:02 ♥ 1

Had the same issue as @Leophyte but then played it with the numpad. Funny!

leophyte 2026-10-20 09:26 ♥ 1

@oadt Sure! I'm using firefox/win11 for my PC and safari/iOS on my phone

neowhoru 2026-10-20 10:14 ♥ 1

oh i really love it! Also that you show the current news from LDJam in a videotext style has a really good charm!

dywanix 2026-10-20 10:39 ♥ 1

cool idea and I love vibe of the old tv

coderaurus 2026-10-20 10:54 ♥ 1

Very nice, throwing you back in time. Catches the UX perfectly.

Well done.

Great take on the theme and a very unique game!

sudocoffee 2026-10-20 15:46 ♥ 1

This was awesome, didn't expect to be using my phone as the controller. Some random thoughts:

* The half-second delay between pressing a key on my "remote" and the result appearing in game, plus an occasional dropped press, are both kind of perfect. Does that happen because of the way you implemented the web connection? * The keyboard controls are strictly worse since they don't have the delay or unreliability. * The sounds from the remote kind of remind me of the Wii (the only console to have a speaker built into the controller). Gimicky even back in the day, but in a fun way, and I kind of miss that on modern controllers. * Love how the Tower of Hanoi is just a bunch of TV channels (that you can still flip through with P-/P+). * Has the front page of Ludum Dare and everything, this should probably be the next LD website design.

Explored everything listed on the index (but didn't check every channel, that would take forever lol). Really cool take on the theme, felt like I was a kid again with cable and a chonky CRT.

oadt 2026-10-20 17:20 ♥ 1

@sudocoffee Thanks for playing! * The delay is a happy accident: I wanted the connection to work peer2peer initially, but didn't have a TURN server available as fallback. So instead every command goes through a server and gets real delay (plus dropping messages seems to come from general bugs in the remote πŸ˜„) But I thought that it is actually quite fitting and adopted the timing for the pyramid game accordingly. * Yeah, I was afraid to add artificial delays when the player might already be annoyed by the phone remote πŸ˜„

Thank you for the comment!

I feel like a small child again, sat down in front of the television pressing buttons again and again in hopes that they will register. Unbelievable what you've achieved here.

I didn't read the description before going in so when the QR code appeared and I scanned it, you wouldn't believe the grin on my face. I love it.

wuppos 2026-10-20 20:31 ♥ 1

I dont know how much of a game this was, but it was definitely super cool! I love the idea of incorporating your phone into the game! I wonder if that could be used for other kinds of games as well :O I enjoyed playing the two games that were on teletext though. Man, this all really brings back memories XD I never knew how to use teletext as a child and I was confused everytime I accidentally opened it. Really well done! I will remember this one ^.^

eugenik 2026-10-21 12:01 ♥ 1

The faithful recreation of the older TV information pages really brought back great memories. It's clear how much effort went into nailing those subtle UI nuances and that classic Teletext delay. Awesome job making this theme come to life!

lizz 2026-10-21 14:36 ♥ 1

HOLY FRICK. Okay, @wouter52 was nerding out next to me while I was gasping. That is a very cool way to show the theme! As far as I see it, it is a mechanic that could be used for a game, not a game itself. You could add puzzles in it that have you go to and through certain pages, add Simon says to it etc. But the idea? I really liked it.

wouter52 2026-10-21 14:43 ♥ 1

Oh my that was so cool! I had the honor to see it from Lizz's perspective. How did you do that?! I mean, there has to be some sort of server running in the background, right?

Edit: we just found out there are actual games to play. We were just mesmerized by the community-feature and left the page afterwards. So the pyramids ARE built by aliens!

Edit2: I like how the keyboard can be used too, as I'm not using a smartphone since a few years now. So no QR code scanning for me

wouter52 2026-10-21 14:59 ♥ 1

Edit3: oh my you included the weednumber πŸ˜†

oadt 2026-10-21 15:12 ♥ 0

@lizz @wouter52 Funny to get the comments from both perspectives πŸ˜„

Yes, it is just a webserver with a lobby system in the background (connected via websockets). The QR code is basically `currentUrl + '/?id=' + randomString`. So the game knows to start in "remote mode" when an `id` is present in the url and that `id` is used as lobby key. Then it is just forwarding of messages on the server side. With webRTC you could also initialize a peer2peer connection once the two clients can exchange messages. But I couldnt get it running (and test it) on my side without a TURN server, so everthing still just goes through the backend

jiri-hysek 2026-10-21 15:23 ♥ 1

Cool idea! And it looks great, real 90's experience! Very nostalgic vibe. Although I'm happy you skipped waiting for the number to dial in :D Awesome idea to have web remote control in mobile, it's a pity it didn't work for me (I got the error page). It would add to the mood so much. I played both games and browsed around a bit. I'd like to have more content so I can explore it for a bit longer :)

I absolutely love your concept, you came up with a great idea. The faithful recreation of the older TV information pages really brought back great memories. It’s clear how much effort went into nailing those subtle UI nuances and that classic Teletext delay. Great job, your game is amazing

ganktronics 2026-10-22 22:58 ♥ 1

This might be the most original concept I've seen in a game yet, lol. I'm not sure if I would've liked music added or not, still torn on that, but I was definitely hooked using it. Great job!

andriybyelikov 2026-10-24 00:33 ♥ 1

Jokes on you, I've seen Tinder-like dating profiles on teletext in 2026 and you didn't include them. Worst game ever.

Jokes aside, the Hanoi game was very cool! Although I am not sure how the pyramid building game could have been implemented in practice. And I can't cancel my sound effects subscription! I guess you could call it a teletext pyramid scheme building game.

kanity 2026-10-25 22:14 ♥ 0

Wow, this definitely felt unique! Sitting in the dark, at 1 am, with just a little lamplight, I really felt like I was transferred into this alternate world where I am chilling in front of an old magical TV that shows text channels! :D The connection with my phone worked flawlessly, and the sound of clicking between channels was super satisfying (I got new sounds in the end... it was fun but I soon missed the original ones xD they really do feel good), and it felt cool doing so on my phone. Like how did you do that?? I can't even begin to comprehend!! To me it is magical x)

I clicked through the first 500 channels using P+ so I appreciate you put a little smiley in one of the "empty" ones. But after that I put in channel 800 to get to the ads xD

Also, I need this game now:

wantthisgame.png

I did enjoy the little games at the 300+ channels, completed them both. It was a welcome splash of colour and they were engaging and simple enough for me to have fun and not get stuck :) (Though I couldn't get really STUCK, I could just continue on with the channels, I realise that x))

The secret old tech of pyramid building was funny! xD And yeah building the pyramid felt well executed, it made sense to me when to drop the bricks, felt natural.

Quite a hypnotic experience overall, I think what you did here really is amazing!!

tigerj 2026-10-27 13:07 ♥ 1

This took me way back, I wish the remote was working for me but it was probably good for the viewers that I did not have to keep looking down at my phone, good work on having a backup plan with the numberpad! Loved the Hanoi game.. reminded me of going to the computer lab back in the late 80's https://www.youtube.com/live/1jKZ760uuDk?t=10933

hinamarina 2026-10-27 19:28 ♥ 1

Wow! This concept felt so interesting! Catch me up in a Hypnospace Outlaw manner that got me really into it! Playing the lil' games with the "remote control" brought me back many memories tbh XD I used to play around with the tv so much when was a kid and this almost hauntological expression captured the enchantment and also the deep eerie vibe those objects hold in a really powerful manner! Just vibing through the channels and playing the minigames felt great! I felt a intense potential for narrative here too, this concept could sure be expanded into a bigger thing hypnospace-like! :) Overall a really refreshing take that captured the theme in a really deep way and left me wanting more, thank you for the game!
