No links?

argensis 2025-04-07 14:53

I guess this is a placeholder for your Jam entry, since there's still 10 hours left.

We have been taking in every hour we can because we are doing the Jam while actively working. We both had to work this weekend, but we refused to give up on the game, today being Monday it's all the same regarding time

Will be updating the game as soon as we finish things up! Imma link all of you once it's done :)

Very charming lil game

sayomgwtf 2025-04-08 02:49

Thank you so much @lordsheo

belowzerogames 2025-04-08 03:40

Good job on your game

ohjuliego 2025-04-08 04:40

Was initially pretty confused as to why you couldn't jump your way down to platforms below. That killed me a lot before I figured out fall distance matters.

hope42morrow 2025-04-08 10:24

Wow, Very cozy!

stacy-davidson 2025-04-08 14:07

Thanks for the kind comments everyone! @ohjuliego Yeah, you're right, fall damage is pretty uncommon these days. That came about because Say suggested we make a sort of reverse-Donkey Kong, where you're getting deeper down instead of climbing up. And so we began with the basics of Donkey Kong, including the fall damage. Initially you couldn't fall down even short distances, but we ditched the ladders due to time constraints. So it became a balance of being able to fall a little, without letting Ducky just jump all the way down and cheat. The slanted floors came in useful for that, you have to actually get to the closest point to the next floor before you drop. Definitely more of a verrrry old school arcade vibe!

slow-chaz 2025-04-08 17:52

this game feels so good to play! challenging in a good way, love the art too.

a0405u 2025-04-08 19:46

Fun characters you have!

soleyeer 2025-04-08 19:47

Tough but charming game. Fall damage seems very unforgiving since if you go down a layer jumping, you die. But other than that. Fun

shores 2025-04-08 19:48

Game so difficult, made me think about what things are truly important in life. Well done, thank you!

sayomgwtf 2025-04-08 20:41

Aiee, thank you for playing our game @belowzerogames @ohjuliego @hope42morrow @slow-chaz @a0405u @soleyeer @shores - We tried to reminisce all that arcade goodness with a little bit of new!

sayomgwtf 2025-04-08 20:46

And thank you @stacy-davidson for being awesome and agreeing to do this bucket of silly with me, you are the absolute best ♥

It was chaotic as hell as we both had a lot of work come up during the weekend, but we made it amg I need sleep and stuffs

swordguy47 2025-04-08 22:33

Such a great game! I especially love the artwork; it's so charming and makes the whole experience feel super cohesive :D I think it could use some design tweaks difficulty-wise, but otherwise very fun and enjoyable. 10/10 would eat sammich again.

she-wrote 2025-04-08 22:51

This is so addictive, every time I died, I felt more motivated to finish the game, and I actually did! Also, the art is super cute. Well done!

sayomgwtf 2025-04-09 01:45

I'm so happy to read you liked it @swordguy47! And congratulations on finishing it @she-wrote! Thank you so much for playing our silly game

And thank you for the sweet words about my wonky doodles ♥

darklumo 2025-04-09 06:10

I like the idea and mechanic of chasing the racoon while avoiding objects and falling. I love the art, is charming.

I have 2 mayor problems with how the mechanics were implemented, that could be bugs or intended: - You should be able to jump over an ingredient on the edge of a row and land in the next row, I kept of dying cause this behavior is counterintuitive - Because of the slope and the separation of the floors sometimes even if I time right the ingredient hit me. This can be an skill issue, but in a really tight platformer like this one it felt odd.

caeonosphere 2025-04-09 06:13

Dang this game is hard! I even got stuck :D

ss.png

I especially love the look and the sound, and the sheer simplicity. A little more variety would have been cool, of course, but that's the jam for ya...

sayomgwtf 2025-04-09 17:58

We love the feedback and we are so thankful you gave our silly little game the time of the day! Thank you so much @darklumo @caeonosphere ♥

nepturenus 2025-04-09 21:24

Very nice graphics and music ! The game is so haaaard, but I tried more than I should have so bonus point for the addiction :)

paulhocker 2025-04-10 04:00

the game is so cute i can almost overlook some of the problem -- the hit boxes, oh the hit boxes -- i need some more room to jump over the ingredients -- this would help with the fall damage -- that said it is a beautiful game and i would love to see it worked on more -- love the reverse donkey king vibe! congrats on a great game!

sayomgwtf 2025-04-10 18:20

Thank you @nepturenus! We didn't expect it to be hard, but kinda loved how it turned out haha

We will certainly revise those points @paulhocker, with the rush of the jam we sort of got to a point in which we said 'this is good enough for now' but there is clearly room for improvement. Thank you ♥

hinamarina 2025-04-11 11:01

I really loved, and LOVED, and loved the overall vibe of this game. You really nailed the mood of the old arcade games and it is really a delight to play because of that. I've tried for so many times but didn't manage to beat it yet, tho :/

I think my biggest grip is the absense of a coyote jump, or even a more floaty jump. In the old arcade games, to handle with this they used to make jumps that were a little bit more floaty and longer, so it was easier to be more precise when you jump around. But since your controls are very crispy and fast, and gravity strong, it became really hard to jump precisely in the platforms without a buffer to not fall in the edges of the platforms or while jumping over the ingredients.

All that said, I really liked a lot your little game. It is super cute, the art is full of charm, the music is super catchy and it really evoque the ancestry with the old arcade ones quite well.

Overall a really great entry! Thank you for the game! :)

stacy-davidson 2025-04-11 16:59

@hinamarina I'm glad you enjoyed it! I was just telling Say about all the polish we can do with the controls, including coyote time. This was designed, arted up and coded in GML from scratch, so there wasn't time to design a state machine or anything fancy, but since the jam I have been looking at the code and thinking about how we can pull it apart to get things refined. Say has been hard at work expanding the gameplay too. We hope to broaden and sharpen the experience with this game and hopefully continue the adventures of Raccoon and Ducky in similar arcade style games in the future! Thanks for playing our game everyone!

cataclysmicknight 2025-04-11 20:19

I was confused at first because I assumed (for no reason lol) that NOT jumping over one would kill me too. But then when I saw the comment about fall damage, I was able to make solid progress. Goodness, this is so cute, and I LOVE the art and music. It's so retro and yet so ***adorable*** on top of that. Definitely addictive: I kept trying over and over to get better scores, and once I got to the second level I was like "Oh, this is easy now" and then immediately died twice on the top floor of level 1 😅

I am so glad to have played this, it's so lovely and fun and cute!

PS: "died of the hungries" and all of the text in here is amazing

sayomgwtf 2025-04-12 03:24

I'm so happy you got a chance to play @cataclysmicknight! Thank you so much for all 'em lovely feedback ♥

ch48 2025-04-12 19:30

It took a rage quit and coming back to this game the next day, but something clicked overnight, I came back and I reached level 2 first try - turns out, when you're not rushing to catch the raccoon, the game is actually very beatable!

The platforming feels a bit unforgiving at times (I don't want to be yet another proponent of coyote time and less punishing fall damage, but I can't help myself), but I loved the art and the general vibes. Solid entry, thanks for the game!!

patrykgazing 2025-04-14 17:23

It's a pity that you die when jumping to the lower platform instead of falling onto it. Pretty nice graphics!

tryam 2025-04-15 11:36

Nice graphics, liked the way the credits are designed. It brings back memories of old arcade games. Unfortunately, I still haven't figured out how to get down from the upper platforms. I jumped, jumped, jumped.. Then I tried to go down after the raccoon. Bam, I lost. I tried again, but I lost again. In general, I think that the tutorial is very lacking. There is a bug with the bird getting stuck on the very first platform when you jump over (it doesn't go back). It would also be nice to add sound settings. Yes, the sounds are good, but they are loud and get a little boring over time. Nevertheless, I think you did a good job. Good luck with further development! Thanks for the gaming experience!

sinclairstrange 2025-04-17 19:28

Aww this is a lovely and cute charming arcade style game. Lovely graphics, really nice gameplay, overall fantastic small little LDjam game! Wonderful.

stacy-davidson 2025-04-17 19:34

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Yes, there is fall damage, so you cannot fall from a great height, nor can you jump up high and go off a platform because that just adds to your falling distance. Not the solution I'd have picked given more time, but for the jam it works to limit the player so you can't just jump straight to the bottom. The removal of ladders left us with few options there, and fall damage is the same here as it is in the original Donkey Kong. Not sure why you couldn't get off the platform. Did you try just walking off of it at the point nearest the one below? Basically just take the same path the raccoon is taking and you'll be fine.

And yeah there's no tutorial, again just like Donkey Kong  We set out to make an arcade game from scratch in 72 hours, so there aren't any options, tutorials, and basically if you haven't every played an arcade game from the 80's I can see how it could be a little confusing.

We are already working with an expanded version with less punishing gameplay and more features like sound/music volume, etc.

Again we really appreciate all the time you guys spent checking out our game!

euler-moises 2025-04-23 01:37

Great game! I was a little nervous about the jumps that kill me, but after I understood how they worked I stopped dying for nothing. I fell in love with the music. How did you manage to make sounds so identical to the NES ones? What tracker did you use?

Congratulations!

sayomgwtf 2025-04-23 17:16

Thank you so much for playing our game and taking the time to reach out with feedback @ch48 @patrykgazing @tryam @sinclairstrange ♥

sayomgwtf 2025-04-23 17:18

@euler-moises we didn't work from scratch, we sampled famicon music games clips. That's why we removed the music category from Sammich Snatcher voting

And thank you so much for playing our game ♥

jonaso 2025-04-24 21:28

Very neat "reverse" donkey kong! Struggled a lot with not being able to go down in the beginning as fall distance did not seem to matter, but understood it after a few attempts. Super retro vibe to it, great job!

sayomgwtf 2025-04-24 21:39

Thank you @jonaso !

This was certainly done with a lot of arcade nostalgia love ♥
