I got stuck after fighting the big red 256 Doug
@dhim Thanks for playing!! I'm assuming all the Dougs ran off on you and you got frozen? If so, I'll be fixing that tomorrow (or at least adding a "get unstuck" button to the menu) so I'll tag you when I've got that patched up!
god i hate when i design scientific impossible mechines instad of prepping for dnd session
Hah I had fun! I also got stuck after fighting the red 256 Doug. When all the Dougs gathered around me, the game "un-froze". I suppose this is a feature, but it feels like a bug. Maybe a waiting animation would have helped.
Some feedback - I had fun playing yours, the voice acting really added to the experience. Did you record this yourself? With some filters sprinkled in? - it was a bit unclear what was part of the background, and what were obstacles - the music really adds to the vibes of this game
@wouter52 Yeah, it's a bit difficult to balance in that regard, best I could do was make it that they'll always get to you instead of running off and leaving you behind forever, which is what I believe happened to the first commenter since it kept happening in playtesting.
(Speaking of, @dhim I did a patch! You should be able to get past Doug 256 now :smile_cat: )
In response to the feedback:
- I'm still working on filling out the credit info, but I and @shreemp both did the voice acting! He voiced Doug (except in the intro where I forgot to ask him for a howl so I did one myself, and I accidentally made foley that sounded like dog sniffing anyway lol) and I voiced Frank. No filters on anything, except in service of the foley (tried to make the howl sound like it was 'shrinking', and pitch-down is what made the snuffling noises lol) - Most things with thick outlines were obstacles, the collision is just a bit wacky. I did try to line up the world borders with the background's hedge though, although I think I got the positioning slightly off. I drew my level design on top of the background which covered it up - Riiight? I came up with a small little tune and just passed the BeepBox over to shreemp while I worked on implementing the voiceovers, he really nailed the Halloween vibes I was going for!
I enjoyed the game, the multiplying function I quickly understood. The voice acting was fun~
Yep, that little bug got fixed indeed, I played and got past that once. Mine looked like it froze, but sound continued and all the ones walking free came to me and poofed to then let me walk.
Oh, I played on my mobile! Thank you, I wanted to do feedback on my phone too.
I did notice sometimes a +1 was not picked up no matter how often I walked over it. But sometimes when I returned later they did work. What I also noticed if I want to walk alongside the edges I need to take a tiny bit of distance or the auto moving stops.
Those massive ones with the big ass numbers totally put me in the right state of mind- Eep! Need more numbers!
@lizz I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! It was truly a wild experience trying to figure out how to do level design based on math aesthetics, lol!
I'm glad you were able to play on mobile! Good thing I fixed up the GUI bugs before you got to our game haha, I always try to design with mobile in mind even if sometimes Godot doesn't play nice. I'm assuming you played it on Itch.io since ldjam's mobile view seems pretty bad, at least on my phone. Note to self in the future to design all my LD game interfaces to be left-heavy since the buttons on the right keep getting cut off
Yeah, I had a hard time with making hitboxes that made sense, it gets easier when the swords are bigger though! I tried to line up the world border with the background hedge but it's slightly misaligned so it does just make you stop walking lol.
I'm glad the big number bosses did their job! :joy_cat:
Being the impatient player I am, I had some trouble understanding what's happening. After a while, I finally understoond the idea. Solid execution, fun stuff. :)
I made it to the end! I got lost a couple times along the way, but we got there! And you're right, The Only Song is... so dang good, really nice track.
Liked the intro ahah! The controller was a bit weird for me but good job guys :)
@zenorke I'm glad you liked the intro! I'm wondering what you meant by the controller being a bit weird?
When I saw that the game was on Godota I already started to think that it would be cool (just on Jam the games on Godota are awesome) it's a pity that this time it's like this. In particular the shitty movement mechanics, like I just pressed a button and he flew away to the ends of the earth, then the gameplay, it's crap, but on top of all this it's cool that there is voice acting and that's all,_,
Funny and weird! Really liked the vo at the start :)
The voice acting at the beginning was pleasantly surprised, and the werewolf looked very fierce. The simple way to win by numbers reminds me of some very eye-catching ads. Unfortunately, the game seems to freeze in the middle of the game. Overall, a good game.
@iwant-pizza I'm glad you liked the voice acting, sorry that the gameplay wasn't so fun haha :( I'm a bit rusty on game dev lol. The 'flew away to the ends of the earth' sounds wild though, should have just been auto moving until the next wall collision, since it's meant to be similar to the gameplay of the classic game 'snake'.
@kultuk I'm glad you liked it :smile_cat:
@futaibu I'm glad you were enjoying it! Could you tell me more about what happened with the freezing in the middle? I never encountered it being frozen, though there is a bug that I added a "help I'm stuck" button for.
Fun intro! Doooooooooug! 😄 I really liked the growth mechanic, and the hand-drawn walking animation and music are impressive, especially for a jam game. Overall great game !
@senso Yeah, the hitboxes in this game aren't the best lol, I was super tired on the last day and made some terrible decisions in that regard lol. Secretly every obstacle is one object with a randomize appearance, but finding 1 hitbox to fit 9 differently shaped drawings is pretty hard ^^; always sleep well and avoid 24hr crunches in jams!
@papabirb Besides that it is still a great game !
After I entered the Monster's mouth with tag 2113574 , the screen suddenly zoomed out with black screen, is that an bug or how do we get past that ? By the way, Nice game concept, liked it. Took a while to get used to the controls but after that enjoyed playing it.
@smiley405 Yeah, that's a bug. I'm surprised by it actually, never happened during playtesting so I'm not sure what caused it to call that code... What browser/OS did you play on? In theory it's rare enough it shouldn't happen if you played again, but I'll do some aggressive code baby proofing and get back to ya. Glad you enjoyed it until then though, thanks for playing! :smile_cat:
Edit: I think I fixed it. The engine sometimes introduces floating point errors that I thought I had patched out from previous similar bugs, but you found a brand new area they could be triggered lol!
Died a lot at first but that was entirely due to having to get back into playing snakelikes haha
Soo, I beat the game twice.
The first time I chose to clear the right side first (as intended, I guess), enter the gnome-looking monster's mouth, watched my ATK fall down to 1, and then cleared the left side till I got to the big guy.
The second time, I took a different approach. Since I knew - thanks to my ATK falling to 1 during the first finished run - that there were enough Dougs on the other side to beat the big one, I immediately went over there completely ignoring the right side of the map. Since Doug is still small enough, he could easily get over there without being stuck. It worked. Sooo, yeah, that's how I beat it the second time.

Since I really loved the music (which is very appropriate for spooky season), I really did not mind spending a bit more time on this at all :)
The voice acting was great, as well!
Screenshot 2024-10-11 204957.png I had a lot of fun <3
@sockenpuppe Wow, I'm glad you enjoyed it so much! :blue_heart: I never thought of seeing if you could win by taking the non-standard path lol, I just liked being able to go visit the big boss in tiny form. Thank you so much for playing!! :smile_cat:
[Thanks for submitting your game to stream!](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2273720699?t=01h59m58s)
This is a pretty interesting take on the snake-like genre! :snake:
I wish the map was maybe a little smaller and it was easier to find enemies that would ANNIHILATE me at the beginning, but once I found a good path, it was smooth sailing
I had a lot of fun playing this on stream. I just exported my VOD highlights to YouTube. love the snake mechanics.

Enjoy!
Music really reminds me of Crypt of the Necrodancer or something, very halloween vibes.
I like the premise of this game being like "number snake", but some of the collision detection felt a bit off to me and it seemed easy to accidentally lose all your lives very quickly. I definitely think the idea here has potential though, it's a really interesting concept.
I love the voice acting and intro cutscene so much, and there's a lot of little details you put in here that really add to the experience! Well done.
@cassowary Thanks for the kind words and for playing! :smile_cat: Yeah, at some point I really need to polish it up to explore the potential when it's no longer laden with jam clunk. The dangers of getting rusty at jamming lol!
