PEPE!!!!! i like it sm!!!!!!!

wouter52 2024-10-08 18:47

@perro the rarest of them all!

wheelsx 2024-10-08 19:16

I really enjoyed the movement mechanic once I got used to it, overall it was good fun. I don't keep up with pop internet culture at all, but all the creatures from the memes you reference are pervasive enough that even I knew of them.

wouter52 2024-10-08 19:30

@wheelsx glad you liked it! You have the top-spot on the leaderboard btw. My entry was a dummy-entry so it was not that empty. I deleted that one, so you're #1!

These memes are outdated indeed, I think the current ones aren't that suitable for a 32x32 sprite. Also, they've become too fragmented / niche / speedy (as in, within days the're uncool again). I can't keep up anymore

wheelsx 2024-10-08 19:41

@wouter52 I also forgot to mention I loved that your character is the finger cursor with the flat bottom, much like the one from windows 95, and not the boring round-bottomed one we have today.

wouter52 2024-10-08 19:49

@wheelsx wow... I did not even realize that they changed that!

lizz 2024-10-08 20:58

I had quite the difficulties with catching what I needed, after ten minutes however I finally got some progress which made me very happy as it let me enjoy the game as intended. Yay! :yellow_heart:

The space gravity pull and such is an interesting idea, however I would have liked if things were a bit slower so it becomes easier to control. :see_no_evil: Though I cannot imagine how difficult it is to make such system!

The sounds and art are pretty fun, my feedback point would be to draw the social media icons yourself so it is in the same style as the rest of the game- Or I just saw it not well enough. :frog: PEPE's redone-art I love, the effect when you put a wrong thing in, the screen getting red definitely made the mood for me. I do miss some background music, even if soft I think it would have made it even greater.

To get an highscrore I will have to sit down for a while, something I will do after rating more games.

kr4ft3r 2024-10-08 21:41

Funny idea and details, great graphics, and in technical sense it is quite an achievement, but the gameplay murdered the fun for me, I mean playing this until the end was a never ending torment (as maybe you can guess by the time it took me), and I'm only saying it harshly because I know you can do better. It took me way to long to realize I'll do better by not using LMB when near the goal, but some planets were still absolutely painful to catch up with. A general advice I'd give to anyone doing space sims is never do anything that resembles realistic physics, but that could be just my taste/handicap, and I'm aware this game wouldn't have much challenge without it, but it is a sort of thing that needs a lot of tweaking to get it right. To finish the sandwich, you prove great coding ability by making all this gravity stuff work within compo time constraint.

pious 2024-10-08 23:15

Funny idea, and the controls were interesting to make it that you had to do a rocket ship. Unfortunately I have to say that in aggregate, it ended up not being that fun for me. The voice acting made it funny and felt like it could've been more fun, but the resolution size made it very difficult for me to see the screen, then the graphics made it hard for me to tell how fast I was moving and going.

The good thing is that the the mini map and goal indicators was a great and necessary touch. I applaud you for that!

mrs-wheelsx 2024-10-09 01:47

I am missing my Kerbal Space Program prerequisite and am totally unqualified to play. lol But I love the graphics and audio! The concept is really good and seems well executed. I will watch wheelsx play again so I can see more of it. I know he wont mind lol Great job! See you next jam!

snory 2024-10-09 05:22

Damn, that 400s in and I was not able to get even one in, but I feel like I was getting used to it. If it would be a morning and breakfast would not be ready, I could totally get lost it in. I am fan of games which need some skill to acquire.

I was once doing a similar game so I know that indication of velocity really helps to control the movement.

Anyway, I liked it, I liked the small details on the map, the audio and how fun it was.

Great job.

wouter52 2024-10-09 17:34

@kr4ft3r hello my friend, thank you for your feedback! As always, I appreciate your honesty! :blue_heart:

I get what you are saying. Even for us it was a challenge to playtest it. Sadly there was no time to balance things out.

We were aiming for this realistic behavior, because we felt too many space-themed games make the space-ship feel like a car. As in: you can brake and steer on-the-spot. So this was kind of an experiment, that needs lots of tweaking ^^" We learned a lot and had fun, and I think that matters the most

I have seen your highscore earlier and felt a bit guilty that you spent 20+ minutes. I appreciate your dedication though!

After reading these comments and playing myself I think I know how to fix 90% of the issues you described. I will talk to my teammate for possible fixes (@ithebreather) for the post-jam version. Some ideas include: - reduce paintings to 5 (instead of 10) - reduce planets to 8 (instead of 10) - increase (de)acceleration-speed of arrow - make the planets leave a trail, so the player can choose to wait for the planet - add an indicator for catched meme-critter - Tweaking the gravity

What do you think?

Thanks for your compliments! The sandwitchmethod really works its magic here hehe. To be honest, I have had some help on the internet. I followed the following tutorial, from TheCodingTrain: **www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAcXnzRNiCY**. If you like coding, than this channel is really fun!

And ofcourse my javascript-templatecode made development much easier. I think you recognize the "enter your name" screen for instance. I created that masterpiece in my first LD entry: CRYSOPHILIST

wouter52 2024-10-09 17:42

@lizz thank you dear  I have some ideas how to fix most of the issues, thank you for your feedback! I think speeding the acceleration of the ship up makes things easier. Like a car trying to overtake a truck: you need some extra juice to make it past.

Background music would have been epic! Though, I do need inspiration :-) Was thinking about a musical-type of thing

I have seen that Krafter spent 20+ minutes on the game. I think that we can't ask more than 5 minutes of everyones time. So please don't feel obligated!

wouter52 2024-10-09 17:51

@pious thank you for your feedback! We agree that the minimap and the indicators were necessary to make this game playable. I have some ideas how to fix it (see to comments above)

The voiceacting is marvelous indeed, I had a hard time keeping it together from laughter while my mate did the voices. It was great, and all in one take!

The resolution is a limitation of the little template/engine I wrote over the years. Maybe its time to fix that, as you are not the first to mention it

wouter52 2024-10-09 17:54

@mrs-wheelsx oh cool! You are mr.Wheelsx's gf/wife? Thanks for playing and for your feedback! Wheelsx does have the highscore, I don't even know if we as the creators can top that score

I wish you the best of luck this gamejam! Curious what your score will be

wouter52 2024-10-09 17:58

@snory ay good to see you here! Thanks for your feedback! I think both our games do have some similarities indeed

The velocity / acceleration indicators help indeed. What game do you mean? I wonder how you dealt with that

pious 2024-10-09 18:23

@wouter52 I recommend stars that parallax in the background to get a better sense of how fast the ship goes! Parallax goes a long way. Maybe also a squish and stretch that oscillates more with faster velocity

kr4ft3r 2024-10-09 18:44

@wouter52 Having thought more about my perception of the game's issues (apparently not having better things to do), I'd narrow it down to this - the starry background is not giving strong enough feedback about your current direction and acceleration. And that might be almost all there is to it.

This background is taking up like 90% of the pixels on the screen and it could have been a great indicator of what is going on, that takes no effort to look at, but it is barely moving. Instead, I resort to squinting my eyes at the minimap, and it is great that you have implemented it, but it is quite a downgrade, having to switch from the whole screen to a tiny square in the corner and figuring out its tiny symbols. As it is, the main view is used only for 1) representing the setting, 2) choosing and seeing the direction the PC is pointing (but not moving) at, 3) scooping animals, 4) recognizing animals, 5) seeing the target planet position's relative direction. If it also had 6) useful movement direction&speed feedback, 7) planet distance, it would have been a much easier ride.

I think your ideas are also good, but - I was already intercepting planets sometimes, thanks to the minimap, but the hardest one to wait for and catch was Youtube, idk why exactly. And ofc acceleration tweaking would help.

kanity 2024-10-10 00:29

Ah I didn't have enough time to read a lot of speech bubbles that popped up ^^''

I like how it has visually retro feel that reminds me of the early days of the internet. But you used the current apps which is funny it itself. I think it's a peculiar approach and a good contender for Humour category, though personally I found it bit hard to play >_<

wouter52 2024-10-10 09:32

@fqds can you elaborate? I don't understand your feedback (even with a Translationapp)

wouter52 2024-10-10 09:35

@kanity there are around 50 social speech bubbles  There are some gems hidden in there, like "I put the 'pro' in procrastination" My mate made these and I had lots of fun while formatting them to put into the code 30 minutes before submission-hour

Thanks for the compliments! The memes are a bit outdated as we can't keep up with current meme-culture

wouter52 2024-10-10 09:36

@pious that was a limitation I put on the backlog, we had the idea to do exactly that! But for performance reasons we decided not to. This one will be added to the post-jam version indeed. Thank you for your advise!

wouter52 2024-10-10 09:43

@kr4ft3r changing up the starry background was a limitation I put on the backlog, we had the idea to do exactly that! But for performance reasons we decided not to. This one will be added to the post-jam version indeed.

Thank you for the deep analysis, I can learn from that. Getting the essentials, in the Netherlands we would say: "We slaan het plat" ("We flatten it out"). I will think about how to best fix these issues

The 10 planets are randomly assigned with random locations (within a threshold) and random velocities. So the youtube one could be the easiest in the next run. I loooove some randomness in my games :-)

many many many thanks for your advise! I really appreciate that. And I'm honored that you're thinking about our game even if you're not playing / rating it

shreemp 2024-10-10 10:14

wouter what is this :eye: :lips: :eye:

On a serious note, once I got used to the controls it was kinda addicting. Then halfway through I had the existential realization of doing chores simulator. It's hard to describe it's really painful to play but that's why I'm enjoying it. Maybe the memes could be a little bigger too because I find that I usually have to release a new meme I just got to see what it is as the hand engulfs it, sometimes it usually being the appointed task : P

wouter52 2024-10-10 18:54

@shreemp haha, yeah this one is c̵͇̳͔̏͐͘ŭ̴͕r̵̻̻̟̐̊̈́s̷̩͓͔̯̓͋̑e̶͎̽͠d̸͙͙̱̀̉̂, isn't it? We thought to try something less serious this time

Your feeling is described very well I thing. The feeling that there is an end in sight, but very far away but doable. That drives me too. @snory has a game just like this. Maybe you'll like that one too :-)

Thanks for the feedback! I'll put that one on the list :-)

skvader-418 2024-10-11 18:58

While I liked the aesthetic (the early internet culture theme) and the idea aswell. I simply could not download a single thing. I played for about 490 seconds and I couldn't even manage to download the kurzgesagt critter. I'm sorry but I just couldn't. My biggest issue is that I can see a blue icon popping out of the planet but once I'm out of range it returns back. I would much rather have it stay where it is. This is an excellent idea, with plenty of humor aswell but the execution is just slightly off.

wouter52 2024-10-11 19:03

@skvader-418 thank you for playing! And no worries! We're aware that this game is pretty difficult. Only three people made it to the highscore, from which one played 20 minutes  I will make sure to add your comment about the memes returning too fast to the list for the Post-LD version I'm planning this weekend :-)

hcs-hades 2024-10-13 04:49

The voice killed me haha! Took me a couple of tries to figure out how to place the creatures after I got them - shot a lot of facebook bees into the netherrealm - but I figured it out eventually!

scsdww 2024-10-13 11:12

haha,so funny

wouter52 2024-10-13 17:55

@hcs-hades It was very funny to see my mate recording those at 23:30PM haha Glad you liked it!

wouter52 2024-10-13 17:57

@scsdww glad you found it funny! What did you like the most??

drinlan 2024-10-14 19:18

I am the ultimate doomscroller. My pepe god is satisfied with my work.

Very original idea, I had fun playing this game! I see that the post-jam version addresses the main issues, so good work!

Loved the voice acting, it made me feel very immersed. I'm surprised pepe didn't ask for tendies at any time, just random memes.

img2.png

The post-jam scores seem to be much faster. I wanted to try that version, controls felt better, but some bug occurred and my mouse kept drifting while the mission was empty... That's creepypasta material right there. I'll make sure to try again if that's fixed. Great work overall!

img3.png

wouter52 2024-10-14 19:30

@drinlan thank you so much for your detailed feedback! And congratz on your highscore! That is impressive

As for the post-jam version bug: that is very strange. I have to debug a bit to see if I can reproduce it. That screenshot really helps. I can see that none of the text is getting drawn, giving a clue where in the code this could happen. Maybe you can try again? If you encounter this problem again, could you add a screenshot of the console? (you can get there by hitting F12 and clicking the console tab)

Screenshot 2024-10-14 212939.png

Many thanks!

wouter52 2024-10-14 19:48

@drinlan , thanks again! I have isolated the problem and fixed it. Turned out that in the post-jam version the game tried to pick a planet that was removed in that version (it still thought there were 10, while 8 were present at the time). So a classic case of an array-overflow.

I uploaded version 1.2 :-)

drinlan 2024-10-14 21:59

@wouter52 Nice, good to see that you managed to fix it. The controls do feel much better! Have you thought about expanding the game with even more features?

img2.png

mrs-wheelsx 2024-10-15 09:11

Tried the post jam, and I am still a flunkie! lol Still love the graphics and sfx though! Space driving is just not in my skill set, but it looks like I will have to send wheelsx to reclaim his high score when he wakes up ;P

Untitled.png

Thanks so much for the post jam build. I managed to at least get grumpy cat close... several times, even lol

rallusgames 2024-10-15 17:33

Cool!

wouter52 2024-10-15 19:25

@rallusgames thanks! Can you give some feedback about what things you found cool? Or even better: what we could change to make the game better?

wouter52 2024-10-15 19:32

@drinlan Holy cr*p that is fast! The ultimate doomscroller indeed! We haven't thought about expanding this game. Normally LD games are a one-weekend experience for me personally + some fixes in the next weekend after collecting feedback.

Some features we've thought about, but was not implemented are: - crashing when touching the PEPE. This was brutal though, as the game would get frustrating - making the gravity around PEPE, such that you always get sucked back eventually no matter where you are - creating a failstate where you could get sucked into the social medium when interacting too much with it

Also we could expand existing features: - extra social media icons - extra memes (like peanutbutterjellytime and the hypnotoad) - extra sounds for actions like plopping down a meme or pickling them up - social bubbles per social medium. The code supports it, but we had not enough time to create social media-specific texts. So we have 50 general bubbles and copied them to each social media object

Some trivia: - You could get away with downloading memes from other social media icons. It works like this: - Chance to get right meme form suggested social: ~ 1/2 - Chance to get right meme from other socoals: ~ 1/16

As you can see, there is not *really* an idea for a big expansion. Just minor tweaks to make this one bigger and better. My mate and I both have 9-to-5 jobs and other hobbies / volunteer work. So we have to choose wisely how to spend our time :-)

Do you have ideas how this game could be expanded?

wouter52 2024-10-15 19:33

@mrs-wheelsx No worries! Sometimes a game just does not fit to your gamingstyle. I appreciate that you tried anyway and could sense a positive impact. I hope Wheelsx beats the current highscore. I love to see some back-and-forth in that highscore table

ex3d0 2024-10-16 00:25

Funny idea, and reading the description excited me for the game. I'm an absolute shitposter and the idea of a funny meme game was hilarious to me. Unfortunately, the gameplay killed it for me. I found the movement really hard to control. I fully understand why, making a space game with realistic physics that also plays well is incredibly difficult, so I definitely applaud you for the effort because on a technical level its a really great feat. The post-jam version definitely fixed up all of the issues I had with the game.

The game was hilarious and fairly addicting once I got used to the movement, it just needed a bit more time for polish. You definitely nailed the chaotic meme atmosphere you were going for with the graphics and audio!

f1krazy 2024-10-18 12:57

I dunno if it's just me not being able to get the hang of it, but this just feels completely impossible to control. I spend a good three-and-a-half minutes just trying to get hold of the first critter from Facebook, and every single time I would either overshoot and go flying off into space, or undershoot and watch it fly off-screen before I could grab the critter. Eventually I just gave up. I can see what you're trying to do, but the controls need some serious work, because this just isn't fun or playable in its current form.

geckoo1337 2024-10-19 20:10

Strange game - strange gameplay - strange aesthetic = a wouter52 project :)

I have to come back here again in order to increase my skill.

wouter52 2024-10-20 18:06

@ex3d0 sorry for the late reply! The last week of rating I'm always slacking as my personal life gets more demanding

Thanks for the great compliments! We had fun creating this, and yes: the math's were a bit mind-numbing sometimes  I'm glad to read that the post-jam version was a big improvement

wouter52 2024-10-20 18:07

@f1krazy thanks for the feedback! We've had some more players that complained about the controls of this game. We released a post-jam version that should be more fun. Maybe give that a try? :-) I wonder if that helps

wouter52 2024-10-20 18:10

@geckoo1337 ayy! Yeah, we always try to do something different / alternative to keep having fun and to learn each LD-session. I must say, for fun this game won't do too well this year  And that's ok! My friend and I had fun this weekend and we had a space-themed game in mind for years, where realistic physics would be at the forefront. Now we know why nobody makes such games: it's damn difficult  But.. We had fun and we learned a lot! So mission accomplished

I'm curious for your feedback! If the game is too difficult, please try the post-jam version after rating (press P in main menu) and see if your issues are fixed in that version :-)
