Played the web version, where itch.io cuts off some of the viewport, but its still playable.

Interesting concept, the controls took some getting use to for the navigation around the board. But this is the most strategic game I've played so far. Wish there were SFX to round out the experience.

@andyp @aly-name

I found solution. It seems the game viewport can work properly if only the browser is zoomed up to 125% large.

Anyway the art is amazing. Nice and very cute one!

quadape 2024-04-15 13:44

Cool entry! My only feedback would be that it's pretty hard to properly see where enemies will go because of isometric view point. For A chess-style game I think just regular top-down view would work better, although I understand that it would probably look worse. Other that that - good visuals and puzzle fights are very fun too, great job!

paprigames 2024-04-15 13:58

Comfy but challenging puzzle game! Nice amount of variety on the enemies, but unfortunately the last levels got so hard that I couldn't solve them without unlimited continues. Graphics were really cool, but I wished for some sound effects.

aly-name 2024-04-15 17:10

@andyp @inkweeper It seems to be an issue with browser compatibility. I've found that it works fine on some browsers, but not on others; after making adjustments, the previously problematic ones are now resolved, but the originally normal ones appear too small. So, the current solution is to remind everyone to zoom in or out of the web page......

Not to be dramatic, but I would die for Snouceri

brandsma 2024-04-16 11:15

Very cool art

thatfirey 2024-04-16 11:40

Ooh very interesting and quite a tricky game, honestly I would really love to see an extended version of it some day, but even this is already very kewl!

promzona 2024-04-16 11:41

Ooof, what an art in this game. There is just a lot of content to it. Cool that you have managed to bring all of it in 3 days!

Liked the game: good submission. Have a nice Jam!

james-7777 2024-04-16 11:56

Really nice game! The puzzle mechanics are pretty interesting with a lot of potential for growth. Would love to see it with music and sfx.

saintchristopher777 2024-04-16 12:16

Nice game!! Web version worked fine for me on Chrome.

The art is gorgeous. Love the cute characters and other charming visuals! I know it's small, but I really like the little spinning gears in the corners :-)

I really wish there was audio. Some chill background music and a few sound effects would go a long way.

Gameplay is okay. I think isometric makes it a little more difficult - regular top down might be better (especially with using keyboard control instead of mouse).

Had fun though! In the end it was the cannon that got me!

manabreak 2024-04-16 12:37

Cool concept and nice take on the theme! There were some issues where the character would move twice when I pressed the movement key just once, and got a bit disoriented with the camera angle. Other than that, I enjoyed this one. Great job!

d0vid 2024-04-16 13:16

I'm a fan of isometric games and tactics games so I really enjoyed this one :)

Very impressive to put all this together in just 3 days

Small nitpicks: - Sometimes keeping a key pressed for too long made me move twice in the same direction, costing me a few rounds in a frustrating fashion :'D - The game would've been more enjoyable if you could play it fully with mouse in my opinion, translating WASD in isometric can lead to some frustrating mistakes

zebraatomica 2024-04-16 14:06

Congratz on making a rly nice game!

drgcandle 2024-04-16 14:08

This game is so stinkin' cute, it's melting my heart into a puddle of goo. The puzzles are crafted with such clever whimsy, my girlfriend and I are head over heels for your game. It's like you sprinkled confetti on our fun factor!

yuu 2024-04-16 16:57

Very cute art and game. There's a lot of content and its very strategic and fun. I played on the browser so I dont know if its different with the app but the area that moves your screen with the cursor is way too big so I quite often have the view wandering off to the side when im just trying to see the enemies movements. Would have loved to have a more global view of the board, and maybe mouse controls. Some SFX and music would have have been insane.

Overall very polished game for the little time you had, nice job!

mantsje 2024-04-16 17:12

Oah what an awesome game! The game is so polished and complete! Summoning bread as a primary defense is grand :) If there was anything to be requested it would be music and SFX (on the web version it did not seem to work for me at least).

Overall rating: Awesome :)

plintusb 2024-04-16 17:36

A very cute and challenging game! The atmosphere of an old anime. To use all the necessary buttons, I felt like I was playing a piano)) in the future it’s better to switch the controls to the mouse - and it will be a very pleasant adventure! :D

nabil-shelim 2024-04-16 18:02

Using WASD keys for movement on an isometric grid was a bit hard to get used to but other than that, I really enjoyed the game. Some sfx and music would have really taken the game to the next level!

codechomper 2024-04-16 19:21

I loved the transitions and thought put into the dialog. The mechanics were solid and even me, a turn based novice was able to get the hang of it. Well designed and complete entry, thank you!

jbisnee 2024-04-16 23:25

Totally should complete this tomorrow. bread magic rules.

nubels 2024-04-17 08:33

Love the visuals and the humor. The controls are a bit unintuitive - I think I'd have a better time if I could use my mouse to move. Well done, thouugh!

zowie 2024-04-17 14:05

Very enjoyable and definitely the most complete game I've played so far. Really impressive you managed to make this much content in so little time. I'm overall very positive about this game but here's some snags I hit: - Some levels felt somewhat tedious to me, like the "central courtyard" level where you have to move all the way to the other side to beat up some of the slimes (which is a pretty damn long way because it's a zigzag level, made worse by the fact that you have to wait each turn for the slimes, who don't even actually jump because they can't move diagonally where they spawn) - I played it on itch.io where the size of the game window generally didn't display the full level and I couldn't really see everything, which wasn't a problem by itself but the camera panning was really slow for me, so it turned out kind of tedious. I think ideally the level should automatically be zoomed to suit the size of the viewport so you always have the whole level in view. - The fact that newly spawned enemies attack immediately sometimes added a level of unpredictability that didn't really mesh with the rest of the gameplay (which was otherwise very fair and predictable) - I didn't personally have much trouble with the inputs but you might want to consider some visual indication of which direction counts as "up/W" and which is "left/A", like a little decorative north-indicator on the ground next to the character. If you point out in the tutorial that the little marker always points north/up people have something to base themselves upon.

Still 5 stars despite all that, easily one of the best games in the jam

aly-name 2024-04-17 16:18

Thank you all for your serious and valuable feedback!

Some features that will be considered for future versions: 1. Music and sound effects (if I learn how to do it) 2. More user-friendly operations (supporting scene rotation or an top-down view, camera settings, and mouse control of course) 3. Optimizing the experience, including revisions to the beginner's tutorial and adjustments to a few levels; 4. Reintroducing some scrapped ideas from previous versions that didn't make it due to time constraints.

leunarie 2024-04-18 01:57

Very comfy game, I love the art so much! You have a very soft and endearing style :) Fun mechanics, some of the levels were difficult but that's probably because I'm a noob lol. The game was overall bug-free. Would love to see more of this!!

wuppos 2024-04-18 04:06

I am really impressed that you managed to make all of this in only 72 hours! It feel like a complete game, with a story, level select menu and beautiful graphics. I also really liked the gameplay. It took me a second to figure out that I could hover over enemies with the mouse to see their movement patterns, but once I figured that out it became a very intruiging puzzle. Especially when there were multiple enemies with different movement patterns it became really complicated. I had a lot of fun with this one! Great job! :D

mumu 2024-04-18 13:44

Big respect for the font choice

nrankin13 2024-04-19 16:39

This is a super fun game with a well-executed concept, excellent character design, and a fun little story. I also admire the save system! Only thing I would like is a compass rose showing which way your WASD and IJKL would function: as someone who isn't used to keyboard stuff, it was rather confusing.

Great job!

(In the future, if you'd like to add music, I'd love to help!)

dimesto52 2024-04-20 12:22

This game really frustrates me. he's really very talkative, a button to skip the dialogue would be really good. more often than not I wanted to move a single square and the game moved me two!

lolipop 2024-04-21 04:30

Cool game!

hammerer 2024-04-22 22:07

Unexpectedly a very smart game for such cute graphics) I liked it!

This is the kind of stuff that catches my attention in no time. Playful graphics and narratives, and hidden inside is a turn-based puzzle game that smells like ~~bread~~ a chessboard? Where's my 'Add to Wishlist' button?

Praise your hands! It's impressive how such a complete package can be made in a jam working solo. Graphics and narratives — people have complimented it too many times, I know; but really, it's what I wish I could draw, to be honest > <. Levels and boss fights — although I gave up early today (more on this later), the first levels have already left me intrigued with this mind-wrapping yet relaxing gameplay, and I'm eagerly looking forward to revisiting this with a different playing environment. Even a level map that gradually unfolds, with save/load abilities utilising the clipboard? That really feels like something to be shipped publicly. (When will it be on your website? > ^)

The game had quite a few technical glitches on my side — the transitions frequently left black stripes on the screen, the moves/lives indicators might not appear, and for once the keyboard controls completely stopped working so I needed to restart. I'm on macOS with Firefox 126. Maybe Godot is to blame; nevertheless, there are definitely a few aspects in interaction that could benefit from improvements. The way that the board follows the pointer feels a bit 'floaty' (i.e., it might move without the player's intention). The isometric display is potentially confusing regarding keyboard controls, and sometimes characters in the front obstruct those in the back, making it difficult to see the whole picture.

All these did not stop me from trying to get through a bit of it and appreciate the game. I'm surely coming back later!

Extremely cute graphics! I really like the puzzle feeling of the gameplay. My only complaint is that the enemy turns take too much time, I wish all the enemies would do their animations at the same time instead of one by one. Otherwise I really enjoyed playing this!
