good retro-looking gfx, would be nice for UI/gameplay elements to fit that aesthetic as well

also would be fun if music and rhythm game were somehow synchronized

second mechanic was not very intuitive, but i figured it out in the end. it's a nice touch

i played your game on my [ld54 lets play series](https://tube.tchncs.de/w/vj8GAYsJtfoh3hFX4nQvLr?start=12m09s)

Nice music and atmosphere. I liked the pixel art too. For me the controls felt a bit unintuitive.

cheesepencil 2023-10-06 00:07

I loved it. Really liked the tunes.

I am grateful you made the difficulty low, I could feel that you gave me a high tolerance for error. If the timing were more exact I would fail in the first couple measures and never see the ending.

I hope this is the winner for audio category!

najjaman 2023-10-06 00:20

@caryoscelus Thanks for your feedback and for playing this on stream! The music is supposed to be synced to the beat, at least on the machines I tested the game on. However I know that it's not enough to support all configurations, because I didn't factor in the audio delay. Godot has docs for that but I didn't have time to implement it.

najjaman 2023-10-06 00:20

@cheesepencil I'm happy to read this :) Thanks!

keichits 2023-10-06 00:44

Nice theme usage here! I'ts very original!

I really enjoyed the idea of this game! Just to bit hard to get look right XD.

Congrats!

greytyphoon 2023-10-06 00:49

I suck at rhythm games, and I sucked at you game too :P

At first I panicked when I saw the letters S and F, and started hunting on my keyboard. Once I figured the shape of ESDF I was fine, but why not use the very common WASD?

Stuff was happening and I didn't know what I was doing and I was bad at everything and in the end it still worked. Maybe the game is actually a genius metaphor for dating ;) Shame it wasn't longer!

decadedecaf 2023-10-06 00:51

The cramped keyboard controls required a little rewiring of the brain, but once I got it down it was a lot of fun! The music's great, and I appreciated the teensy bit of queer inclusivity. Lovely compo entry!

fifut 2023-10-06 08:57

I'm too bad with the keyboard to succeed with this kind of game

najjaman 2023-10-06 14:18

@greytyphoon Thanks for the feedback! The physical WASD keys are labeled ZQSD on AZERTY keyboards. Using them would have meant either an even weirder input scheme for AZERTY users, or some way to detect/define the keyboard layout. I didn't like the second option because I'm already putting a menu (character selection) between pressing Play and playing, it could have worked though. The biggest issue with ESDF is that people are having a hard time mapping that input shape to the vertical layout of the keys in the UI. Seems obvious in retrospect!

sudocoffee 2023-10-07 01:27

This was a pretty hip game! I loved the quirky storyline.

I played version 3 with the SDFG control scheme (on a QWERTY keyboard) -- I touch type, so I needed to keep my index finger on F for the letters to make sense to me, which meant I was reaching over for G. But I found it comfortable enough to play.

If you want to use keys based on physical location though, it looks like Godot has a [physical_keycode](https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/classes/class_inputeventkey.html#class-inputeventkey-property-physical-keycode) property for keyboard inputs. That might bypass the need to detect what layout they're using.

woona 2023-10-07 08:25

Cute game and story! I really like the pixel art.

I felt that things happening on the screen were a little bit disconnected from your inputs, but despite that it's a fun game! Great job!

najjaman 2023-10-12 14:21

@sudocoffee Thanks for playing and for your feedback :) I'm using physical_keycode already, the key issue (pun intended) was that it's not enough to tell which keys are pressed, the game also has to display them. Skipping WASD entirely solves it :)

kiv 2023-10-12 15:49

Very nice approach on the theme! Also the visuals and music are really good. While reading rules, I thought that you chosen pretty cool control keys, but while playing... oh man it's a chellenge! buut still fun!

phlip45 2023-10-12 16:05

I thought the atmosphere was really well done without being too distracting from the inputs, which is something even professional rhythm games can have trouble with sometimes.

I think the best fix for the controls issue would be to have the player map their controls before starting, but I can see how you may not have had time for that, depending on your engine.

Really fun and the music was great!

rasblo 2023-10-12 16:30

I love that you went for a rhythm game, nice charming vibe! Almost did that myself. Although you didn't sync up the game to the beat of the music? Would make it feel a lot better. I would use FMOD for that which I recommend, and as it's a web build from Godot I know you didn't 'cause it doesn't work yet.

I just managed to get lucky before the hard part was about to kick in (eye-contact + hit the notes)

tygrak 2023-10-12 21:24

Yay I won! That was super fun! The music was very good and the art also very nice. The SDFG controls were a tiny bit uncomfortable for me cause I wanted to use both hands to do this rhythm stuff but those buttons were a bit too close to each other but that's just a tiny tiny thing. I was very scared that I'll have to do two things at once at the end of the game but luckily I won before that :D.

untitled-studios 2023-10-12 21:25

Fun, cute little game! Absolutely love that it told a cute story, I would love it if more LD games used narrative more heavily, and I wish I did it more in my own work. It's really tricky to make rhythm games, especially in a short timeframe. Great job!

captaindreamcast 2023-10-13 03:48

Nice and funky rhythm game! I got the two lovers together, eye contact was established and the dance floor was dominated.

I thought the pixel art style worked well here, I think it fit well with the aesthetic. Music was wonderful, I still have it on while writing this, it's very funky, I like it a lot. Had no issues with the controls either, a comment above mentioned the music being out of sync, but for me personally it was in sync, so I encountered no issues. I had a lot of fun, I think there was a perfect degree of challenge in the amount of keys and the speed of the music, not too hard, not too easy, very well-balanced. Great job all around, well done!

najjaman 2023-10-13 10:07

Yeaaah great to read your comments @tygrak @untitled-studios @captaindreamcast :) :) ! :star::man_dancing::star::dancer_tone4::star:

fullsaphir 2023-10-14 19:03

Very nice, the idea is original with the theme and the music is good. Par contre j'ai trouvé ça super dur, peut-être car j'ai un azerty faut dire. En tout cas, bon jeu

lincolnsalles 2023-10-15 05:46

Wow, really difficult. Maybe 3 keys, but 4 keys really broke me lol, but a good idea, I couldn't win over the girl

wt64 2023-10-15 15:05

I thought the concept is really creative! Rhythm games can be difficult to have sync well, so props for having the controls match up with the music from what I could see (really think the music fits super well and can be relistened to!). I think having to control the eyes and the dancing at the same time was a fun challenge.

lcstark 2023-10-16 17:13

Nice little rhythm game! I'm usually terrible at those, so it's great you didn't make it too difficult! :P

I've played through the game several times and everything seemed to work well, I didn't get any of the sync issues others have reported.

Not much for me too say that hasn't already been said by others before me... Though there are two things I'd add: - show a score at the end screen, as it would be great to see how well you did - how many notes you've hit and how many were missed or mistakenly pressed - add a button or some other way to restart the game from the end screen

Other than that, great game! The music is really banging. :D

This game offers an inventive take on rhythm games, brilliantly integrating the "Limited Space" theme. Its retro pixel art visuals are a delight, and the catchy music perfectly complements the disco ambiance. While the unique keyboard controls align with the theme and present a fun challenge, they might pose a slight learning curve for me at least. Overall, this game is a rhythmic gem worth exploring!
