It would be helpful if there was an explanation of the controls somewhere, like in the description of the game page. After bringing in my first haul, I could no longer collect anything.

megafatsquirrel 2023-01-10 03:22

@koboldskeep Thanks for playing. I believe you hit a bug and sorry about that. The Space Dust Cargo should return to 0 after bringing in a haul.

bezbiletnym 2023-01-10 09:21

it seems that the ship can't harvest more dust after the first exit

ditam 2023-01-10 17:30

I too had trouble collecting more SSD after the first drop-off, even though the cargo counter did return to 0.

megafatsquirrel 2023-01-10 22:32

I fixed the bug stopping players from harvesting after their first run.

Nice little game, could be a lot of fun if expanded, like with more upgrade options or a mini-map for example. Amazing job!

steffo 2023-01-11 06:15

It does not seem possible to rate this game: is it a bug?

vrerabek 2023-01-11 22:27

Cannot rate this game :(

The sound effects though. It made me laugh so much when I first heard the collect sound.

johnnysix 2023-01-11 22:31

Did you turn off ratings? The massive debt was hilarious , if you develop it more, it'd be cool to have upgrades , guns etc. and maybe make the control WASD instead of cursor to work better with mouse ?

eranot 2023-01-11 22:50

Very simple, but nice concept. You could improve it and then try to re-release it at the main page =)

dom-de-re 2023-01-12 03:03

nice :) you chose a well scoped idea. The only annoying part for me was that i initially had no clue where the exit area was and searching for it with the initial thrust takes a long time. Nothing that serious. nice one!

pope-paf 2023-01-12 07:19

Zhis sound effects dude :) What is this?! :D I got pretty damn fast though was fun ;)

simono 2023-01-12 08:49

I seem unable to rate this one too - no rating options? Like a good upgrade game though! More upgrades along the way would be fun (carry more cargo, better turning speed). Maybe things to avoid too? Had fun, nice work :)

osh-studio 2023-01-12 11:30

In a way this game is super similar to mine, 2 dimensional controller trying to collect things and then getting upgrades. I do wish there were more upgrades however.

multipixels 2023-01-12 20:15

Fun start to a game, I can definitely seeing this being expanded into a full game! Nice premise, a goal that everyone can relate to, well done!

frozenfire92 2023-01-13 01:04

Interesting idea, would love to see you expand upon it more! The sound effects were very jarring to the rest of silence. I think I ran into a bug after level 2 purchasing upgrades I was stuck (but could collect more and exit again)

Keep on making games!

cobear25 2023-01-13 03:30

Nice one! I also went with a "harvest in space" theme. I'd love more types of upgrades, more variety of dust to collect, etc...

brandann 2023-01-13 05:26

hit a few bugs but I can see the intended goal.

svenerik 2023-01-13 06:56

Some fixing & adding stuff and this will turn into a nice coffee-break game. Just needs some adversity in some way, perhaps more tense timed minings where ores are split around and some speical or you "must" get etc. Good job!

brainles-etertainment 2023-01-13 21:20

The game is pretty addictive. Also at some point I discovered that I don't need to rotate the ship at all. Just fly up and down and sell the Special Space Dust and repeat endlessly.

maartene 2023-01-14 21:14

will I get other updates other than just thrust? I would like to increase the rotation of the ship? otherwise, indeed a cool start of a game.

pkenney 2023-01-16 15:51

Cool system and I appreciated the detailed status readout in the top left. Dust sound was pretty cool, too. The ship's thrust was pretty strong after a few upgrades, and I appreciated having the friction that slowed me down so that I didn't get lost in space.

I see that this is your first Ludum Dare entry... CONGRATS!! That's awesome. And you made it for the compo, too!

I want to give some feedback on one pain point I had. I don't want to sound overly negative, since this is a small thing. But I think it's important so I'll go deep on why... but I hope this is helpful constructive feedback!

I struggled with what I physically had to do with my hands in this game. I have to use the arrow keys to drive my ship. So I line up my ship. Then I push uparrow for 2-3 seconds to harvest dust and fly to the exit. Then a window pops up but I cannot close it unless I take my hand off the keyboard, and go find my mouse, and then aim the mouse to the button to close the window, and then aim it again to a different place to close the other window. And then I have to take my hand off the mouse and find the arrow keys again. Then I press the downarrow button for 2-3 seconds to fly backwards into the cloud again. Then I repeat.

I do this on an infinite loop and then unfortunately the main work of the game becomes switching my hand back and forth between arrow keys and mouse.

Probably this sounds like a really dumb complaint to have, but honestly I would have paid 25,000 for an upgrade that let me press space bar to close the dialog box, or use WASD to fly my ship. The game would have felt so much smoother and I would have run my loop so much faster, if I could just put my hands on the controls and leave them there.

I remember my first few Ludum Dares, I had to learn all these little annoyances and gradually built up a list of "oh I shouldn't do that" stuff, but only if people pointed them out. So I hope this was helpful. I don't mean it to be some big negative.

In generaly, I think a keyboard game like this should have keyboard UI elements and not need the mouse. But if you must use the mouse, then I think you want your FPS setup with WASD+mouse, and then also allow arrowkeys for the lefties who left-handed mouse. But arrows+mouse is a nono in my opinion for this reason.

ANYWAY sorry to dwell on that minor point.

I thought this game had nice art and good flight controls, and a cool core gameloop that would have built up into a sweet progression if you'd had enough time to add 3, 4, 5 kinds of upgrades.

Nice work and congrats on a successful LD compo entry!

EDIT: I cannot rate your game. Maybe you have opted out of all the categories? If so, here is how you fix that:

Go to your game page. Click the pencil in the lower-right of your game page. Scroll down past the decryption, cover image, and links. Find the "Rating Category Opt-outs" and make sure they are NOT CHECKED.

megafatsquirrel 2023-01-16 21:42

@pkenney Thank you for the feedback, I don't take it as negative. :) You have great feedback and I appreciate you taking the time to share. Since this was my first game, I opted out of the rating. I used this entry as a personal learning journey using Godot. I look forward to entering into the compo again.

lizelive 2023-01-24 06:34

i get to double spend my money stonks.jpg congrats on completeing compo game! and yeah moving up and down works a bit to well maybe make it a bit more hard? like add something that is not stonks so i have to turn? or like turn upgrade?

digivorix 2023-01-26 21:49

I seem to be unable to actually rate the game, I don't know if that's a bug with the site or if you forgot to enable some kind of option on your project's page. Either way, the gameplay itself is pretty basic, but it does have potential. I like the detailed screen that pops up when you deliver space dust to an exit, but I'm not a fan of the font. I would recommend flushing out the UI and adding in a custom font. A mini-map would also do some good since there is no real way to tell where you are since everything around you is just black. Also, I do like the upgrade system, but I would've added a few more upgrade options to keep things interesting. Finally, I would recommend giving the ship some kind of laser or cannon, so that it can fight back against the enemies.

I think I also encountered a bug where if you fly below the green exit object after completing a run (into the gray area) and then fly back up to it, it triggers the completion popup again and all of the space dust seems to disappear.

Honestly this isn't too bad for a first jam game, but I would recommend working on the enemy graphics, UI, adding some music and sounds, and adding a bit more to the gameplay.
