Nice idea:)

Timing for high or low jumps is pretty fun. Good Job!

orangutanrider 2021-10-05 11:20

Nice graphics.

Capture.PNG

I'd say it's an interesting concept but it lends itself to timing, and from that waiting.

Which is not something most ppl are interested in, when playing platformers.

electric 2021-10-05 11:27

I really like the mechanic itself, although it unfortunately becomes a waiting game in some instances. would be cool if you could have at least some form of control over the speed the gravity changes.

samuel-fine 2021-10-05 16:37

Thanks for the comments everyone!

@electric @orangutanrider You both hit the nail on the head. I didn't start off planning on the "waiting" to be part of the gameplay, it just sorta happened. I don't know if it's...good?

When I think about platformers like Celeste or Super Meat Boy or Spelunky, they definitely require more along the lines of speed and precision timing. I'm not aware of another platformer that requires patience as a key mechanic (beyond the go-stop-go pattern you'll find in Mario 1 or Mega Man games, for example) so maybe this is something to pursue further! Definitely a lot of room for tuning and tweaking.

disn 2021-10-05 20:11

What a cool and tidy game! Really like the concept and the interface.

If I worked on this, I firstly would polish platforming a bit, for example, by adding a few extra ms of time to jump right after the character falls off the platform (many platformers from all ages do this to have a less annoying experience overall)

fat-cat 2021-10-05 20:14

Really like the player animation, it looks goofy hehe

cooltomten 2021-10-05 20:15

I liked the concept of having altering gravity and having to time my jumps with it. I'd recommend having the gravity more dependant of the distance from the planet, it's hard to read when the gravity is higher when the moon is on the right side.

aboykiy 2021-10-05 20:18

I really liked the idea here, it took me a few levels to realise the gif in the top left showed what the gravity would be though, you probably explained that in the start so that's on me. The pixel art is ok, it's good a good feel but is a bit noisy and in some levels the sprites overlap. I also at some points got stuck in the levels and had to restart the whole game so maybe a way to restart the level would be good. Overall a good game with an interesting concept.

vladimir40a 2021-10-05 20:18

An interesting garter to the topic. But I caught a soft lock somewhere on the 4th screen. I stuck between the texture and the border of the level)

giulychu 2021-10-05 20:19

When I "restart" from the menu, the game does not work afterwards. The game is very nice, the level design is to be reviewed (but I understand you I'm a landslide drawing levels. It takes a lot of experience). Good job!

knexator 2021-10-05 20:21

Almost abandoned it in the first few levels, which game the impression of being a game about plain waiting, but then the breaking platforms add a nice timing challenge, almost puzzly. Great game! Last level has a very fun (or unintended??) solution

stefan-b 2021-10-05 20:22

interesting twist that you cannot directly control the jump hight but have to time it to the planet position. The controls could be a bit more forgiving and smooth but nice concept!

samuel-fine 2021-10-05 22:37

@disn Thanks for the kind words, and I fully agree. I used Construct’s built-in Platformer functionality for the sake of time but there’s a lot of room for improvement. The input handling is all very literal, no wiggle-room, which isn’t ideal for this sort of game. Something I’m going to revisit in the future!

@fat-cat Ha, thanks! Lots of “programmer art” going on so I’m glad you enjoyed it.

@cooltomten Thank you! Definitely hoping to tune the orbit UI in the future. :)

@aboykiy Thanks, and agreed on the artwork. Very much a rush job. :grimacing:

@vladimir40a Whoops! Sorry about that, must have messed up a collider. Will check it out!

@giulychu Ahh thanks for the heads up! Will check on that menu bug.

@knexator Appreciated! The waiting is kinda the opposite of most frame-perfect platformers, glad to hear you enjoyed it.

@stefan-b Thank you for playing! Totally right, the controls are a bit janky. Used built-in functionality, would love to roll my own jump/gravity handler for better precision and more forgiving input handling.

varundevs 2021-10-20 14:11

Nice I really liked the main idea

glaikunt 2021-10-20 14:35

Fun little game! Got to the end, really like the idea. Lot of potential with idea as well. Great Entry!

oliver-richmeier 2021-10-20 14:43

Really good implementation of the theme, and great concept for a timing puzzle platformer. Some aspects need more polish but it's all doable with enough precision

erikengineengineer 2021-10-20 14:58

I liked your game! At first it felt a little bit slow 'to wait until jump' but then it got more complex and i really enjoyed the idea! Very nice take on the unstable theme.

mrks 2021-10-20 15:11

what a great concept! really nice game good job :)

lilkrit 2021-10-20 15:20

Very cool idea. I like the spikes that force you to jump LOW.

samuel-fine 2021-10-20 15:28

@lilkrit Thank you! I had a moment of panic once I got the prototype working, like "uh so what do I do now". Figured I'd take what I had and make a level that did the opposite! Instead of the typical make-the-big-jump platformer moment, use the dynamic gravity to force the player to make the _little_ jump.

potatolain 2021-10-20 16:17

This is a really cool idea! The gameplay was short but sweet, exactly what you'd hope for in a game jam like this. I really liked how you interpreted the theme and used gravity. Others mentioned that waiting might be a problem, and I think that could be true if you extended this to the length of a full game. At this length though, I think it was just fine!

Thanks for a fun entry

agsilverag 2021-10-20 16:26

cool game! I had fun playing it but as other people have mentioned it can be a little tedious waiting for the orbit to be in the propper place, it was also sometimes unclear the exact jump hieght i had. I wish there was both a bar that detailed how high my next jump would be and a small "fast forward" button to minimize the waiting. I also think it would be cool if gravity was the variable relating to orbit rather than just jump height! otherwise fun game thou

tomatolamp 2021-10-20 16:51

Seems like I was stuck in a similar predicament to someone else, but overall I really liked it and wanted to keep playing. The concept is slow to pick up but rewarding in practice!

samuel-fine 2021-10-20 17:04

@cppchriscpp Thanks for playing! You're right that the wait time might get a bit annoying in a longer experience. I'm considering ways to avoid "stall time"; maybe a secondary task that the user could perform while waiting for gravity to line up? Definitely something to look out for, either way.

@AGsilverAG Fast-forward is _interesting_. Didn't consider time as part of the mechanic, but I'll think on that. As far as gravity affecting the world beyond jump height, I very much wanted to get some gravity-affected objects in there but didn't have the time. Thanks for the kind words!

@tomatolamp omg I had no idea that was even possible

zimny11 2021-10-20 22:00

Yay, I managed to win! Cool mechanic! I did not see anything like that till now. The art style is also really nice. I would prefer that only contact with the top of the disappearing platform would make them vanish, but maybe it adds to the difficulty. I would love to see further development of this mechanics. Multiple moons on the orbit (and not necessary on some regular elliptical orbit, but also on some crazy, unrealistic one too) or even maybe moon with a moon! Great platformer. It was fun to play it!

cdunham 2021-10-21 00:55

Nice little platformer. Its a cool idea, but I would've liked to see it used in different ways. The visual in the top left for the gravity is a nice touch. Having some variety in the gravity changes and orbiting speed would be cool too.

uinelj 2021-10-21 19:36

I really like the graphics and the whole idea. However I felt that the level design did not do your idea enough justice!

sinci1 2021-11-03 22:35

what a creative concept!

Props for finishing the game, honestly this concept is unique I haven’t seen it before, and the execution is solid too, the levels utilize the concept great, especially the last level! [though as the commenter above me points out, perhaps there were other possible level design ideas to further flesh out the concept]

It fits with the theme, and really my only complaint would be how in some levels you have to wait a lot in order to time your jump, sometimes I’d die, then I have to wait until the orbit completes, then die again, and I’d end up waiting for most of the time.

Not sure how one could fix this though, since the timing is part of the game.

Anyway either way a cool game with a cool concept executed cool-y!
