Good job, I liked the stat readouts and that you added several different sea creatures, it's a really nice concept. You could try enabling "shade smooth" in blender on the models to create a rounder look with less polygons if that's your intention, like for the squid seamonster things shell or the submarine. Also it might be nice to apply impulses with the movement or direction/have damping on the movement and rotation so that when you press a movement it doesn't stick on constantly until you cancel it, that type of control feels a little less intuitive than it moving slightly and then slowing down and stopping when you release the key. Good job though!

deadmanjw 2021-04-26 13:28

Thanks for the feed back, I spent far too long trying to get the basic controls working using the new input system that i wanted to learn. But yes i agree the controls could be a lot better and yes the models where what i could do in about 3 hours and I am no artist :)

lone-wolf 2021-04-26 20:25

Nice game, sad you didn't finish it all of the way.

In the end I got snatched by a giant seagull and then dropped down from space, I'm still falling. Untitled.png (Go deep then head full speed for the surface, enjoy your flight)

nick-rafalski 2021-04-27 01:29

Totally getting Pokemon Snap vibes from this, in the best way. I know it's not finished, but I actually would love to see this fleshed-out into a concept. The first time I saw a super giant squid-thing, I nearly shat my pants, there is a lot of potential for rare and mysterious deep sea creatures here. With the right music, polish, and (probably procedural) world generation, I could get lost in a game like this. Nice!

deadmanjw 2021-04-27 08:49

Lol, @nick-rafalski @lone-wolf Thanks for the great comments, there are still a couple of issues with the movement as I wrote the controller from scratch which i really should have done a lot quicker. I was aiming for weird dark horror ish vibe when you get closer to the bottom but this does give me some encouragement to maybe put some more time into this to get it into a more polished concept. Thanks

zimny11 2021-04-27 10:26

Great game idea! It's a pity you didn't have time to polish it. I think a fog-like effect would have helped a lot with the look of the games, but I understand there wasn't a lot of time. I'm always impressed when people can create a 3D game in such a short time.

goldone 2021-04-27 21:38

Really love the idea - shame you didn't manage to implement all that you wanted. Love the look of the submarine and the finish, and the feeling of depth. Only thing to call out were the controls which felt a bit artificial - but still a great job with the limited time!

andrew-hoyer 2021-04-28 20:47

Once I got going this was a lot more fun than it first appeared. I think I may have broken it though, as I ended up as a flying sub. Very cool game for the amount of time available.Screen Shot 2021-04-28 at 1.46.05 PM.png

deadmanjw 2021-04-28 20:58

@andrew-hoyer Yeah i found that there are a number of control issues, i made the controller from scratch and even though i spent loads of time on this it still needs a lot of work.

Thanks for the comments though.

asdehielo 2021-04-28 23:38

Relaxing game, I like the idea of just enjoying the scenery and taking pictures.

I really don't have anything to add over what other people already suggested, so I'll just say that if you ever update it, let me know!

kunonooni 2021-04-29 04:22

For what you have it is very interesting. I have tried using Blender and I'm just no good at it at all  Your models are really great and I particularly like the squid looking ones. I really thin you should keep working on this when you have the time. I think you have the start of something great here.

kotzi 2021-04-30 10:35

This is nice submission, hope you find time to finish it for a post jam version! The 3D models are great (specially the ones at deeper locations). I would try to add some _water sounds_ and maybe even some quiet music.

robotex 2021-05-05 03:13

I don't know what should I do. I just descended untill I see orange cube. There are nice ship model and fish models.

deadmanjw 2021-05-05 08:47

@robotex Yeah i didnt finish the game, it was meant to be where you could view the fish using the "c" key and then take a picture of them using "v". You would then get a score on your picture which would convert into points you could use to upgrade your sub. Unfortunaty the controller took too long to code and the 3d models also took too long to draw but really had a good time trying :)

oadt 2021-05-08 13:23

Great models, would be interesting to see this game finished. Even though you already display the position of the submarine its still pretty difficult to really grasp the position and movement of the submarine. I see you started to fix this, but there probably just wasn't time as you already described. Nice entry!

lex 2021-05-09 21:51

I loved the concept, too bad you didn't have enough time to finish it. Modeling takes quite a lot of time if you're not well experienced in that, but keep trying and learning. You're gonna do better next time! Congratulations!

deadmanjw 2021-05-10 08:59

Thanks for the kind words @lex

viperux 2021-05-12 19:53

I see that this is your first submission, well done! The idea was nice, too bad you didn't finished your game. It was probably too ambitious for just one person in just a weekend. An upgrade mecanism takes time to works well. As for the movements it's really hard to understand if you are moving forward/backward and the fact that the camera is fixed (you can't rotate it) makes the movements a bit clunky.

If you want some advice for the future:

- Spend more time on thinking and try to dimension the project on your skill/possibility. Try to find a simple "core" idea that you can build in few hours and then expand it. So that at least you'll have a finished "core" if you don't have time to expand it. For a game like your the "core" could just be an "experience" in which you go deeper and deeper and just enjoy the environment. After that you can add the "camera" mechanism and then something else... Try to polish it a bit (ie. your fish turn arund suddenly instead with a smooth movement). - Try to use assets that you find on the internet... it speed up your work (unless you are a graphic or enjoy creating the assets). - Think about switching 2D... 3D assets are harder to find/create/adapt and they feels "patchy" if they aren't well made (or just different from one another). - Before the jam starts set up your empty project, do a bit of brainstorming on every possible "final round" theme and maybe start searching/creating some Assets based on your thought. Try to find ideas that you can use on multiple themes... the more work you do before the jam starts the better :-) - Add some sounds... even a simple one, a background music... even if you remove the "audio" category. It creates a better overall experience. - Try doing experience playing other games. I.e. On this jam I've seen that games with a shared leaderboards are funnier and probably on the next we'll try to add one, maybe we'll create it before the jam starts since the "shared leaderboard" mechanism is the same for all the games.

Anyway just continue trying, jams are a funny and great experience! You'll get better with time (like we did) :-D

deadmanjw 2021-05-12 22:08

@viperux Some really great advice, i didnt realise you where aloud to effectively start before the actual compo (download resource etc) hence i didnt start pre creating assets code i just did everything within that weekend. I did do some initial notes on ideas on what kind of game i would try to make if that theme got picked. I thing sound is a big one and i think your right even a little would have helped in my case, but any thank you very much for the great advice. I will try and apply this if I do one next time.

macdoom 2021-05-13 09:12

Nice game! Always loved the sub-games, from operation fox on the Atari 2600. Cool poly sea creatures. Got to the boxes on the bottom of the sea and went even lower than the sea floor. Would love to see this more developed. Excellent work

eboatwright 2021-05-14 23:55

it wouldn't load. :(

deadmanjw 2021-05-15 12:03

@eboatwright hmmm, maybe try in a different browser perhaps Chrome.

fire-soldier888 2021-05-15 18:08

Realy cool!! i am looking forward for the finish game!

chrisap 2021-05-15 20:48

I'm sorry you didn't have enough time to finish the game :( There is something interesting about using pictures and getting graded to receive upgrades. The fish models are cool but some animation would be nice. You could try changing the sprite on the base particle physics effect in Unity to make the submarine expel bubbles instead of the basic bulbs of light it comes with. Instead of using toggle speeds, it would be more fun to add velocity to the submarine and would make it more responsive and fun. Adding colliders to the prefabs even if they are simply box colliders would change the feeling in general. Game jams are rough and sometimes life gets in the way, don't worry about it, I look forward to your game dev journey and improvement! <3

eboatwright 2021-05-16 00:32

@deadmanjw Chrome doesn't work either. :frowning2:

deadmanjw 2021-05-16 13:48

@eboatwright thanks for trying, not sure what else to try as other people have managed to play it.

eboatwright 2021-05-16 14:45

@deadmanjw Yeah. :frowning2:
