Pretty fun game, i played it in the browser and the resolution was not that high and after every move the sound that plays has a clicking noise or so at the end, but that was only in the browser when i downloaded it, it wasn't there, but there resolution was still a bit low. The 50 steps thing is a nice game mechanic.

fatebreak 2021-04-27 13:58

I got a bug a few times where I could occupy the same space as a push block by using the undo function. I also couldn't figure out how the portals would work. Fun design idea though!

judgezedd 2021-04-28 09:29

Absolute mind-bender of a game. Took me a few minutes to get 'into' what I was meant to be doing, but once it'd clicked, I was hooked. Very clever, nicely realised, excellent work for the short timeframe.

Hey @dergamer - thanks for the feedback! It was my first time publishing a game with Unity, and I still haven't entirely mastered managing the screen resolution. I hope it wasn't too annoying for you, and I have no idea where the sound bug may have come from. I'll try to keep those things in mid going forward. I'm glad you liked my game and thanks again!

not-as-artistic 2021-04-28 14:38

@fatebreak - Yes, the undo is a bit wonky, as I completed its code just before I finished the game. This left me very little time to test and debug. As for the portals, you can get information by exploring the world (hint : check for the top left part of the world) - I'm glad you liked it and thanks for the feedback!

not-as-artistic 2021-04-28 14:39

Hi @judgezedd - I'm really happy that you liked my game! I meant to have a little intro/tutorial sequence, but had to cut it due to time restrictions. It was my first game jam game and wasn't very confident in my work, but getting this sort of compliment means the world to me. Thanks for playing!

dergamer 2021-04-28 14:56

@not-as-artistic No it wasn't annoying still wanted to mention it, I think in Unity you can change things like resolution in the project settings, when i remember correctly there is a quality tab or so

I don't know either where it could come from but it was only in the web build maybe something unity messed up in the build🤷‍♂️

romanempire 2021-04-28 15:44

I like the main mechanic, though I feel like some more complex puzzles would have made the game more engaging. Overall a good entry though!

habibirb 2021-04-28 15:44

It was a fun game however it was very confusing so I had to restart a couple of times before I actually made any progress. Maybe if it were a little easier I would have liked it more but overall very nice.

pschichtel 2021-04-28 15:49

Not bad for a first jam game. Some background music would be great

not-as-artistic 2021-04-28 15:50

@romanempire Thanks for the compliment! I was originally planning on the limit to be 100 steps, and make more features and zones like health pools and enemies that push you a certain distance. The time limit made it impossible for me to do so, and I had to settle for a quick demo-like experience that shows the core idea around this game. Thanks for playing!

glorbax 2021-04-28 15:51

cool game. Neat mechanic

not-as-artistic 2021-04-28 15:52

@habibirb Having to restart, take a look around, and learn where you are was one of the main points for the game. However, I do agree that I could have made it easier to understand from the get-go. I wasn't able to make a tutorial due to time constraints, but I'm glad you liked the game. I'll try to make some concepts easier to understand going forward. Much appreciated for the feedback!

not-as-artistic 2021-04-28 15:53

@pschichtel Sound and art is not my strong suit, and I wound up making only the simplest effects :p Maybe next time I'll have more time left to invest on some nice music. Thanks for playing!

@glorbax thank you very much!

trusty 2021-04-28 15:56

bee tomato? Fun game, reminded me of baba is you in some aspects. Thanks for the game.

cubanfrog 2021-04-28 15:56

The general gameplay loop of the game was really good, even if the word puzzles were a little out of place. I would have liked to have a button to reset the whole game, as sometimes I forgot the clue and needed to got back to read it and then walk around to reset the game. Art style was very cute and the Baba is you inspiration was clear. Good work!

3dflow 2021-04-28 15:57

Cool game ! I could imagine the final game being a nice mix between "baba is you" and "minit"

core69 2021-04-28 15:57

really cool idea, cant wait to see if it goes any further. maybe we'll see 51 step treasure next time?

divagated 2021-04-28 15:58

Interesting game. I was unsure how to finish it. I know how to do the purple puzzle, how to use the portals. I can collect all 3 gems and talk to the dungeon monster thing, but I'm not sure what to do next.

not-as-artistic 2021-04-28 16:01

@trusty @cubanfrog Yes! I'm glad you got the motivation! I loved Baba is You, but unfortunately I'm not quite that intelligent to make good puzzles. The point on the word puzzles I agree to some part - they do feel a bit out of place, but I wanted to introduce some narrative into the game, however small it may be. But yes, they do feel awkward - maybe I'll learn some better way to organically do narratives later on. Thanks for playing!

not-as-artistic 2021-04-28 16:05

@core69 Haha, I was originally planning it to be 100 steps, but had to cut content. Maybe I'll continue on with the idea.

@3dflow I definitely took inspiration from both! Thanks for playing :)

@divagated You'll have to find out what answer the monster wants. Explore around! Maybe you'll stumble into something you didn't know already

antti-haavikko 2021-04-28 16:18

Sooo, I'm drawing blanks on the rhyme thing. Even tried cheating but this doesn't make any sense...

Screenshot 2021-04-28 at 19.00.51.png

And it really depends how well you need it to rhyme, there could be at least hundreds of different combination. And the fact that the first word isn't even a real one (to my knowledge at least). I don't know how it's supposed to be pronounced, like "chess" or "jesse".

So my best guesses for the first word were "press" and "messy".

Yeah someone obviously is a fan of Baba.

As already mentioned, the undo mechanic was quite broken and also quite unnecessary. I think having just a plain restart would have been better. I mean, it was only 50 steps anyway.

This was also already mentioned but it had some scaling issues. The step counter didn't seem to fit to the screen whether I was full screen or not. The sprites also were a bit blurry which is most likely caused by Unity's default bicubic scaling, changing that in the sprite import settings to point/none or whatever it was called would help. And I also think there are some pixel perfect settings on camera (I don't really do pixel art games so can't remember for sure).

Screenshot 2021-04-28 at 18.48.27.png

The only route to the poet triangle wizard made me push this block to the diamond and that completely breaks everything. Kinda similar how you could mess with the undo to get the blocks stop working too or get yourself lodged inside them.

Screenshot 2021-04-28 at 18.51.04.png

Anyways, good job on your first game jam game! It's not perfect by any means but it's fully playable and doesn't have any completely game breaking bugs.

not-as-artistic 2021-04-28 16:56

@antti-haavikko Thanks for your feedback! Though it seems like you're making out the word puzzles to be a bit to difficult for yourself, (hint: it's a lot more *literal*) it's probably my fault as they are a bit awkward and rather poorly done. I also did not expect the box to be pushed all the way over there, the intended route uses the portals and that would probably be the reason you though it was the only path. I'm pretty sure I know where that bug comes from, but I'm not too sure I could fix it without causing a bunch of problems. But I'll try! Thanks for the feedback!

collin-visser 2021-04-28 17:04

Very cool game - well done.Compelling, want to continue playing.

antti-haavikko 2021-04-28 17:33

Well yeah, of course the only path without the portals! Only could reach the dude with one move left like that and since he did nothing but tell some story I guessed that the portals would be the correct way forward.

Still drawing a blank. I did try the most literal version though, ie. the hint itself.

eugenik 2021-04-28 20:41

Waow.

junebug 2021-04-29 04:52

Cute little game! The sound effects were fun but the clicking after every sound spoiled them a little. Congrats on finishing something for your first jam!

not-as-artistic 2021-04-29 06:38

@junebug I am aware of the sound issue, but could not find why it happened, but another person commented that it wasn't in the windows build so I'm suspecting that something happened while unity was building the web version. Thanks for playing!

crow-seeds 2021-04-30 01:36

I really like the premise of playing over and over again to figure out how to do stuff. Really digging the Baba Is You aesthetic! However, my brain is too smooth to get passed the black eyeball starfish looking fella. Pretty fun for the time I spent on the game.

t-c 2021-04-30 03:24

I got a little tripped up because the things you have to type in are case sensitive! But other than that I really liked the idea as well. Had some good atmosphere and a nice idea. Good job

not-as-artistic 2021-04-30 03:41

@crow-seeds the key is to explore around! I'm glad you liked it and thanks for your feedback.

@t-c oops, it completely slipped my mind while developing, I hope it wasn't too big of an inconvenience. Thanks for the feedback!

namidasai 2021-04-30 07:07

Original look and feel with a lot of charm! The 50 step premise made me think of a turn-based Minit and that's a great hook you could definitely continue with. I found the portal's word puzzle a bit obtuse and was disappointed I could not find more hints around to help me solve it. Well done on implementing the grid movement and some smart level design that leads the play throughout efficiently! (Ergh, I'm two steps from the end and can't get through because I didn't solve the portal puzzle!! That's pretty amazing I can get that far yet still not reach the end, great stuff!)

not-as-artistic 2021-04-30 09:18

@namidasai Thanks for the nice comment! I agree that the word puzzles are probably the worst bit of design in this game (not including the art, sound or bugs I guess). I'm not sure if I'll continue on to make a post-jam version of this yet, but I'll be sure to keep those things in mind if I do. And yes, I spent a good ten hours trying to make the level layout so that you are tantalizingly close to the end but can't make it if your moves aren't efficient to the max  I'm glad you liked it!

neowedge 2021-05-15 19:00

Good and original game, nice work!

not-as-artistic 2021-05-16 05:42

@neowedge Thank you for the compliment!
