this game is awesome! i love the camerawork, how it switches and rotates, how it gives sneak peaks on looming danger and all. The lighting is fantastic and i adore the animations . also the ps1 retro look and feel is spot on. the only thing that bothered me is the speed of the spider-enemies. Those are blistering fast, biting me before i can take a single shot.

codeer 2020-04-21 22:12

Great looking game! The shooting feels really good. I don't really like how you can't move while shooting and how the enemies keep attacking immediately after you die because it makes the game really hard. Other than that it's really cool.

almax 2020-04-21 22:49

@codeer thanks for playing! Not being able to move and shoot at the same time was actually an active decision as we were trying to stick to the PS1 style and games back then usually had the same behaviour because of full body animation limitations 😊

yoshify 2020-04-22 06:30

I really loved the art style in this. I think you hit the PSX era of graphics on the head, it really invoked a pleasant feeling of nostalgia.

I second what Magus77 says, the spider-like enemies are incredibly fast haha. Might need to tune them down a little, but I enjoyed this.

Thanks for the game!

The first Unreal Engine game I'm playing so far in the jam and it's really nice! Never thought that PS1 graphics style would feel good to play. I like how hard the game is. It reminds me of old times where a player feel satisfied when completing a game! Keep up the good work!

maqo12 2020-04-22 13:59

Man i don't know what to say. WOW!

radicalace 2020-04-22 17:07

Very cool concept for a game, always love seeing contrasting protagonists! The PS1 style top down camera lends itself well to the general flow of the game. The music and graphics work well together too! I found it very difficult to kill the monsters though as you can only shoot in the direction you're facing and you don't really know how much damage you're doing. Getting swarmed while trying to protect the baby is absolutely brutal lol All in all, I found this a fun game and I'd love to see more of it.

I love the aesthetic you've made with this game. It's amazingly cohesive given how much time you had to work on it. Even though a lot of the environments are just made of grey blocks it doesn't feel like placeholder art, but like it was intentional and as a limitation of the "system". Even some of my frustrations playing it, like not being able to move and shoot, I accept because it feels like an older game where that sort of thing would be standard. Thank you so much for making the robot dying not a game over, and for the generous checkpoints. The only thing I would have wished to be different was having the code for the last door be randomized every time you die. I took too long in that section and lost, but then when I came back I was able to quickly rush through it because I remembered the code, making it feel a little too easy. Other than that one hiccup, the level design and pacing was great. One detail I especially liked was how the robot had to drop the baby to lift doors. The animation for opening them really sold the difficulty and the fact that it was established at the very beginning made it feel like a fact about the world and less of a game-y hindrance. You folks did a really good job on this one, A+!

Wow - 5/5! This game is fully polished, spot on!

Really great visual style, the 3D retro-ish feel you were going for was completely achieved. The animations, the colors you chose, the lighting, the camera movement to reveal what's important, everything is just perfect.

The audio is amazing, the music is hectic as it should be - it implies a kind of urgency which is what you want, the baby's life is at stake :-) The cue when I drop the baby, the crying, that is an immediate feedback on my actions. It is so very clear and distinguishable from the other sounds that I know what to do. Actually the first time I did not visually notice that I had dropped the baby but it was clear by the sound. The choice to make it stand out like that is spot-on. The most important thing is the baby and you always know when you dropped it.

Everything about this game is so clear and created with intent. The level design - you show me one mechanic after the other, first you show me how to open a door, then how to open a door that is heavy, then the cradle. And step by step you make me understand the four symbols that I need later. You start off by just showing them all to me, then you make me press a button twice (or was it three times) to change one symbol and with all that I am able to solve the final stage. Really great progression, excellent game design! The same is done for the shooting. I first enconter two spiders, then more and I am taught to temporarily drop the baby to shoot. At the same time I find out in a manageable situation that I stand still while shooting so I can make decisions as to when and where to put down the baby reasonably. Again, your level design and progression is top-notch!

The puzzles intermixed with the action of shooting spiders feels really good, well-balanced. The final stage, the run-way with the spiders was hard, I tried it three times to make it. The last time I chose the strategy to just ignore the spiders, run to the door - chased by six spiders - and just open it. I would get knocked down but the door still opens. This seems to be a glitch, opening the door should probably be aborted (unlike the baby) when I get torn to pieces. But by "abusing" this I was able to just open the door, get knocked down, stand back up, get the baby and move it. This was the easiest way to solve it :-)

Overall a real gem, awesome work for a LD game with such time constraints. I assume you are professionals and have a lot of experience and discipline in what you do. Hats-off to you three, my deepest respect. You are true artist.

Game feel is really good, very well made audio and visuals.

The enemies feel unfair, they're fast and relentless, while my character is slow and clunky feeling. I can't outrun them, and trying to stop and shoot doesn't seem effective either. It's like you wanted me to used the baby as a meat shield lol WHY!

almax 2020-04-22 21:10

@ismael-rodriguez maaaaaaaybe.... :wink:

nodlehs 2020-04-22 21:14

Well done. I felt a little clunky with not being able to move while shooting but otherwise great. I did notice they'd ignore the tasty baby if I dropped it while running around defending :)

peachtreeoath 2020-04-22 22:17

The whole time I was playing this I was thinking "I wonder if these guys used Crusader: No Remorse" as inspo. After seeing the 1999 release date I'm almost certain of this now...

This game is amazing. One of the best implementations I've seen of the 'fish survive out of water' concept I've been seeing a lot. Mostly because there's a lot of choices to be made. Some realizations I had over time were:

- Screw single gun gunplay. Yea the baby takes more damage but the firing rate is too rough - Make sure to pick up baby while operating consoles, to save on HP even more - That final run was pretty challenging. Eventually I decided to shoot at the bugs as early as possible. And once I got to the gate I would just drop the baby to tank hits while I opened it lol. Btw that baby can tank alien hits LIKE A G

So in the end this game had very fun puzzles and level design. There was tension at all times because of the baby and short levels, but also I really liked how RNG played into the game. Some fights would go well, others I would break apart easily. That variation in gameplay made it REALLY stand out against other games like this, because it wasn't just a repeat-improve loop. There was that bit of tension as to whether the run was gonna go right or not. Great job!

perpetuummobile 2020-04-22 23:18

This game was very very tense because of the baby. The PSX-like graphics were awesome, so far one of the games I've had more fun with.

kent-reese 2020-04-23 00:04

Killer audio and I love the PS1 stylization of your graphics. The humor is on point and overall it's just a fun arcadey game. Nice work!

eckkert 2020-04-23 01:59

The #1 baby stealing simulator of LD46.

marcell-balog 2020-04-23 02:06

Wooow. I don't usually like to download games, but this one was definitely worth it. I can only say good things about it, the audio, artstyle, level design, smooth gameplay, putting the baby on the stove, I really liked all of it. Only, if it was longer...

jake-marks 2020-04-23 05:55

Took a few minutes to get it, but this is a really cool game. I loved it in pretty much every way. The art, the gameplay, the music, it fits the theme, it seems like it even has an interesting "world". I think you guys deserve a 5/5 on this one. I would have played 20 levels if you made them.

pomelouncia 2020-04-23 06:27

It is really cool. The crying of the baby always remind me I have a mission to portect him. the camera is fixed which makes me hard to aim and shoot. The puzzle is good but a little bit direct. Anyway I like it and have fun acting the cool robot! Thank you!

krapht 2020-04-23 12:07

Very well done game. Only down side to the gameplay I could see was how you could end up getting stunlocked but it only happened twice so it wasn't enough to make me stop playing. Controls were intuative and the game did a great job of helping me figure out what I was suppose to do without throwing a ton of text at me. Story wise something to say the baby will be ok would have been nice but it's something I can get over.

erebus 2020-04-23 23:18

Really nice take on a revival of ps1 games! Thanks for bringing it by the stream!

I am so happy that full game is going to come out March 1999, I am going to wait patiently!! Great entry! It set a mood straight from si-fi horror movie. I am usually not that good with horror settings in games though, but this game worked for me. The game could have used some kind of introduction, telling you what your aim is. At the beginning i didn't really know what i am supposed to keep alive, then i saw this ekhm beautiful baby :) i secured it and put it into healing machine. But wasn't sure why i should pick it up and go further instead of keeping it safe there. Once there was a bug where i killed every monster and picked up a baby but still couldn't cross gate. Time run out and happily auto save re-spawned me just before that room. So all hail to auto-save!! Nice feature! Overall i was super impressed with level of details you managed to put into your game. Graphically and mechanically it was all top-notch.

jk5000 2020-05-01 18:03

This is an interesting and very well made jam game. The difficulty was a bit too high for my ability's, but I had still fun trying your game.

boaz 2020-05-08 08:00

Good game

louiejams 2020-05-09 13:19

Made sure to play this till the end as soon as I started playing, I loved the PSX feel and style!

The shooting was okay, I found that I absolutely needed to put the baby down if I wanted to fight off monsters, a couple times trying to hold and shoot and I was unable to defend.

I'm glad that you are given a chance to remedy the situation by allowing the player to be put back together, however, when surroudned by 4 enemies, It was near impossible to fend off any attacks and the robot was shortly blown apart again and the game was lost.

Really good idea, i'm glad that you guys are continuing work on this project and look forward to seeing it in future :)

nabo369 2020-05-09 13:35

Absolutely amazing game! The artstyle is really well made and the way the levels where designed I really got the sense of a larger world outside of what I saw. So again, great job on making this great game!
