Great job. I enjoyed playing it. Not very convenient location of the camera, especially when the character goes from top to bottom (or vice versa). The most comfortable thing was walking to the left. But overall it was fun)

alejandrodecea 2019-04-30 18:48

@max-torn Thanks for playing! The camera not keeping up with the player was one of the issues we wanted to tackle, but it ended up being delayed until there was not enough time left to address it

gear-steak 2019-04-30 23:35

This looks really good. Biggest complaints are only being able to take one hit, with how fast and relentless the crabs are it was far too easy to die immediately without even seeing them coming

alejandrodecea 2019-05-01 01:11

@gear-steak Thanks! It is indeed a bit challenging, but as the game is fairly short, we wanted it to be a little bit tough (although the camera should allow to see further)

poffle 2019-05-01 19:00

Cute style but tough game play! It gets very frantic quickly and didn't feel like I had a chance to react sometimes. If the camera was a bit further out or on screen indicator of where the crabs are coming from might make it bit easier. Fun though! Great work!

mrspeaker 2019-05-01 19:03

Great job - I played for ages: it took me a while to figure out the "dominant strategy" to beating the crabs (they would always come up to the same horizonatal line!). I wish the doors were checkpoints, sucks going back to the start after you think you'd cleared an area! But besides this, this was a really polished and cool entry - great concept!

hechi 2019-05-01 19:05

Good work dude, i really like the pixelart here and the feeling of the controls. I understand that you want the game to be challenging by putting only one life into it, but it would be nice if enemies made some kind of noise when they enter on agro to notice the player.

Great game anyways!

alejandrodecea 2019-05-01 19:07

@poffle Glad you enjoyed it  We actually wanted to include some kind of radar that indicates the crab positions, but we simply didn't make it in time

fabian-pohl 2019-05-01 19:07

Fun little Bullethell and cute graphics; Cool entry!

northernhawk 2019-05-01 19:08

@mrspeaker thx for your feedback! Glad you liked it, we might consider adding check points post jam if we continue with the concept. One more thing, share that "dominant strategy" with us if you can, I really need it :P

alejandrodecea 2019-05-01 19:10

@hechi Thanks :3 and nice idea! A sound cue would help the player understand when they're being chased.

jofersgames 2019-05-01 19:14

Fun game liked the graphics and harvesting mechanic felt good

Wish there was more of a use of the stuff you harvested though (or maybe i didnt play it long enough)

Really fun game though, good job :)

dodormeur 2019-05-01 19:17

Really cool game ! A bit too hard at the start, but the tutorial at the beginning makes it less frustrating, and you quickly understand how to play a bit better than just running in ^^ The pixel art is top notch, and the controls are quick and responsive. I just wish that the game was longer, maybe for a post-jam entry you could add more levels or randomly generated levels? :)

purrseus 2019-05-01 19:18

With the current camera you are constantly on edge because an undead crab could pop up from top or bottom anytime, it's close to survival horror

But great mechanics, smooth gameplay, nice concept, super cute crab migration :crab: , awesome Enter-the-Gungeon-esk graphics, effective sound design - your game has a really nice atmosphere and overall feel, I had a lot of fun, even if it was quite difficult with just a single life! If the camera worked as intended, I seriously would not have a single negative point, really well done!

elnu 2019-05-01 19:18

Good job! I especially like the graphics! Another small detail I liked was the flipping of the gun sprite when the mouse crossed the player. That's something I often forget. Soundtrack was nice as well!

alejandrodecea 2019-05-01 19:31

@fabian-pohl @jofersgames @mertios Thx! I appreciate the kind words

alejandrodecea 2019-05-01 19:35

@purrseus Survival horror :joy: Although I got some scarejumps myself while playtesting  The problem with the camera is that if we placed it even further towards the mouse cursor, you wouldn't properly see if you're being chased from behind  Thank you very much for the feedback!

alejandrodecea 2019-05-01 19:37

@dodormeur It'd indeed be neat to expand on this game, maybe turn it into a roguelike, who knows! Thx for the feedback :3

trevor-shoe 2019-05-01 19:42

Really nice work. Looks awesome, reminds me a little of Cave Story (which I loved). Fun to play, and good mechanical take on the theme. Music and SFX feel spot on. I'm a little confused why, as a zombie, I'm bringing the crabs back to life, rather than making them undead like me... I forgot and let the zombie crabs touch me the first few times, thinking they were my friends.

I made a somewhat similar game but used shift/ space for abilities -- kinda wish I'd used left/right click now. Feels easier to remember.

One idea for camera is to zoom out based upon the player's movement speed. Another is to lerp the camera towards a point in front of the player, in the direction they're moving, so you provide some forward sight. Might be tricky. Dragalia on mobile does some of this stuff reallllly nicely, I was fascinated by it.

chazatron16 2019-05-01 19:43

Really nice game! The audio, graphics and gameplay were all very good, I felt like the gameplay pace especially worked really well, those crabs are really fast and provide a good challenge! The only thing I'd say is I don't think it follows the theme very well, but I do see where you were coming from with this, good job!

miu 2019-05-01 19:45

I like it but the crab are a bit fast for me to react in time so I always die

alejandrodecea 2019-05-01 20:03

@trevor-shoe Thanks for the feedback! I love Cave Story too  (still gotta beat it in hard!). We wanted Anton to look like an undead so it made some kind of sense that he was able to gather life from living beings (we originally planned the ability to steal the life from the resurrected crabs too).

Regarding the camera, we originally had the camera moving towards the direction Anton was moving towards, but it felt a lot better when we made the camera just follow the mouse cursor. Zooming out could also be a solution, but we didn't want to break the pixel-perfect feel of the game

alejandrodecea 2019-05-01 20:05

@chazatron16 Thanks! There certainly are games that fit the theme better than ours, but we wanted a game where you could use life as bullets, and this came out

trevor-shoe 2019-05-01 22:40

@alejandrodecea thanks for the explanation, that's interesting. Offsetting toward the cursor is a cool solution. Capturing the life from the crabs is a neat idea!! Thus tying it back to how much ammo you have. Ah making games is fun :)

alejandrodecea 2019-05-01 22:59

@trevor-shoe it is :3

fm-studio 2019-05-02 12:43

Nice game! Great graphics and sounds. I loved the fast action: difficult but satisfying. Good job.

tricky-fat-cat 2019-05-02 14:24

Very fun and insane game. Now I want to add crabs as enemies everywhere together with bananas.

minibobbo 2019-05-04 22:31

Those crabs were tough! And relentless! Fun entry! Reminds me of Enter the Gungeon without the dodge rolling!

The camera movement could use some work, like others have mentioned. I found a simple way to deal with it that works really well in one of my previous entries (I'm sure I'm not the first). Basically you just want to position the camera half way between the player sprite and the mouse position on every frame. It lets the player look ahead almost a full screen, but at the cost of seeing behind them. It looks like this...

wingman_shooting.gif

The best part is it is dead simple to implement. I use it in all my mouse shooters now.

rodrysson 2019-05-05 12:06

@fm-studio Thanks a lot for your words! We will improve the game feel and the difficulty. :D

rodrysson 2019-05-05 12:09

@artyom-volkov hahahahah! Mmmmm... Nice idea... Maybe, we should consider extending the beach and add some palm trees

rodrysson 2019-05-05 12:13

@minibobbo Oh! Thanks for your feedback! One of the references was Enter the gungeon heheh and you're right about the camera besides, we should have increased the fov and the game probably would be easier :S

captainpilot 2019-05-05 21:33

It's reaaally challenging but very fun when you get into the groove.

rodrysson 2019-05-06 16:22

@captainpilot yes! When you're expecting the crabs it is easier :P

peterfonts 2019-05-17 15:33

Cool game! The camera behaviour can improve if the camera moves where the main character is aiming! Overall it's a great game (nice crabs AI ;D). Great Job!!
