In order to fix the resolution issue, try adjusting the anchors of your UI elements and setting your canvas scaler to scale with screen size. Take a look at this: https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/HOWTO-UIMultiResolution.html

As for the actual game, I didn't understand how exactly I raised god's opinion (by pressing the numbers and sacrificing) and how I lost. At first I tried to balance the resources and periodically sacrifice. Then, I just started buttonmashing.

If you fix the UI anchoring and give a little more feedback for different player inputs (like UI animations), it could be a nice resource management game.

daniel-abeleira 2018-12-02 17:04

I don't really get the idea of the game. But good job anyway first jam is always hard

caspercaper17 2018-12-02 17:53

@atium-addict I really appreciate all the feedback you gave me and ill certainly look into resolution.

The game:

You have resources on all sides, the point is to make sure both sides have more then 0 of every sort and to make sure gods opinion of you stays above 0, every time you sacrifice, gods opinion raises by 50.

You can shift recources between sides to make sure dyou have sufficient amounts of resources to sacrifice or to supply to feed amother side.

Consumption is every 15 seconds and will deplete random amounts of all resources.

Collecting happens consistently depending on the sources (I mever finished that part, theres a static amount of sources now)

I hope that makes the game clear, I will add that to the description as well.

Now for my original idea, to make my desisions a little more clear.

The initial idea was to have villages producing resources depending om what recources they could locally produce. The villages would have to trade to make sure theyre all stocked on all goods.

Youd also have to regulary sacrifice goods to god to avoid disasters, this sadly quickly proved to be too farfetched for my skills.

caspercaper17 2018-12-02 17:56

@daniel-abeleira That should answer you as well.

mathoslink 2018-12-02 18:08

I really enjoy the ideam even if I couldn't find a way for improving God's opinion. Is there a specific to strike ?

caspercaper17 2018-12-02 18:31

@mathoslink The sacrificing of recources by pressing numbers 1 to 6 increases God's opinion

quantumpotato 2018-12-02 18:50

Itch lets you specify operating system, just click the icon for each build. Search Unity export to Windows, Mac, Linux to make executables for each platform. Screen Shot 2018-12-02 at 13.49.01.png Screen Shot 2018-12-02 at 13.50.46.png

sargonius 2018-12-02 19:40

This reminds me of my first jam game, good work! But it's quite hard to understand what to do and how does it work.

caspercaper17 2018-12-02 19:47

Thanks @sargonius. I never thought people would find it hard to understand XD. Its a good lesson, I shouldve included a tutorial.

tomcat94 2018-12-03 02:24

First off, congratulations for completing your first game jam ever! I hope you enjoyed it and that it's the first of many.

Great work with the theme. While the mechanics themselves are fine and reminds me of an idle clicker, something that would help improve the game and sort of work to the benefit of your mechanics is a better layout for you UI. Here's my suggestion:

GodNFoodUI.png

I think a change like that, while simple, can improve how the game is played dramatically. A clearer explanation for what the number keys do would help as well, as I wasn't sure what t/m stands for but assumed it just affected how much of your resources were sacrificed to please the gods.

Anyway, congrats again! Hope you gained a lot of knowledge from the experience.

mantou 2018-12-03 04:52

Nice idea. But it is too difficult to exchange something, when the game checked key down.

caspercaper17 2018-12-03 05:54

@tomcat94 thanks a lot for the feefdback, in future games I will definitly put more time in the UI. Its was the first time I made the UI so right now its one messy contraption inside the editor.

I think I might expand on this idea making it a real strategy game during this month.

caspercaper17 2018-12-03 05:55

Ans @mantou Yes, thanks for the feedback, this is a function I think I implemented too quick.

2018-12-03 08:36

Thijs is the best game ever fuck rdr2 go play this

caspercaper17 2018-12-03 08:38

@ikbenkaspersgrootsefan Have you got any feedback? As your comment seens very sarcastic to me.

nakami 2018-12-03 14:11

Hey I wanna play the game but when I click on start (or exit) nothing append and if click several times, windows say program not responding. Should I set some specific settings before launch the game ?

caspercaper17 2018-12-03 14:39

@nakami What are you Pc specs, loading the game can take a while. Loading the game takes about 10 seconds for me but if you have a lower end computer it might take longer

radical-dog 2018-12-03 15:08

Good on you for getting involved with a jam!

I think you should work on making the game rules clear, and obviously people have talked about the resolution stuff. Once I worked out what was going on, it was an interesting idea. Perhaps it could be improved if the player could see 5 seconds in advance what the consumption would be, so they could make sure their resources are in the right place?

I hope we see you again next time :)

caspercaper17 2018-12-03 15:14

@radical-dog Thanks for the feedback, next LD ill be back. Better.

theboss12 2018-12-03 15:35

Nice first game...On my resolution it looked weird at first.

caspercaper17 2018-12-03 15:51

@theboss12 Thanks for the comment, indeed I had some issues with UI, but @atium-addict Helped me out with this :D

kaisenthegreatone 2018-12-03 16:01

Did not unterstand :(

caspercaper17 2018-12-03 16:12

@kaisenthegreatone Ich kann probieren du ein handleitung auf deutsch zu geben.

Du must das essen auf beide zeite <0 haben. Du kann das essen mit q,e,a,d und z,c swischen dem seite transportieren.

Du must Got blei machen. Mit 1 6/m kannst du das essen zu Got geben. Als Got >0 ist, verliert du.

I hope that will help, I only have had 2 years of german, so it's probably really flawed, but you might be able to do it with that.

blodyavenger 2018-12-03 16:23

It took me a while to understand the rules & controls but once I got a hang of it I became a master trader, pleasing gods while doing an understandable business!

The only downside I see is progression which doesn't does it change over time? I pleased gods greatly but difficulty didn't seem to rise. That and controls which could be simplified with interface intractable with mouse (suggestion mockup included below). sug.png

In any case, good idea, perfect for devices!

caspercaper17 2018-12-03 16:27

@blodyavenger I really appreciate the UI and control suggestion. I think im going to practice a little with buttons in the future, as thats obviously a good thing to learn. Also including a difficulty curve would be a good idea. The biggest problem i had whilst trying to include a difficulty curve is that the game becomes prectically impossible at some point. Thats why I left that out.

Thanks a lot for the awesome feeback, i appreciate a lot.

blodyavenger 2018-12-03 16:49

@caspercaper17 Not a problem! And yeah, I know, it takes time to balance things well, had the same issue with my entry. Well, good luck! :)

william-derksen 2018-12-03 17:16

ItThe game would be fun with some progression! I like the mechanic of sharing resources and in particular I like the danger of accidentally exchanging too many resources. It me feel like everything is in a delicate balance, which to me feels like part of the mood of the game. Idk if that was intentional, but if so, it was a great use of controls to illicit mood. Overall, fun concept that you should really expand on!

caspercaper17 2018-12-03 17:24

@william-derksen Thanks a lot for that feedback, I spent a lot of effort on making the game balanced. As I explained in a earlier comment it was the idea to have several cities trading, and occasionally offering goods to god to keep him pleased, if not he'd destroy settlements, and eventually kill your civilization off. This trading mechanic also would allow for cities not producing certain goods. Which I thought would be a cool mechanic

But after I spent 2 hours just on the resource counters i realised this wasn't gonna happen and I simplified it to this.

barrier 2018-12-03 19:35

I have an issue that I cant even start the game from the main menu. I guess it's cause the button is in a weird position? But when I click a couple of times in different places the game just crashes. Can you tell me what resolution you are playing at so I can try it with that?

caspercaper17 2018-12-03 19:52

@barrier What is your operating system? Also it takes a while to load the game, so once you clicked the visible button text near the start button, wait for a while it should load the scene.

jhell 2018-12-03 21:10

Hi, I like management game so was pretty pleased to find this :) A bit simple for my taste and it took me forever to figure out how to sacrifice a resource to the God. With a bit of village management it would have been loads of fun! Good job

j0ye 2018-12-04 15:57

The game didn't work for me. It always crashed when I pressed Start. But you should definitely keep trying and join in again in April. Maybe you'll see if you can create better graphics in another program, for the next time

caspercaper17 2018-12-04 16:04

@j0ye Its ashame, its didn't work for you, I heard this issue more, and I dunno what causes it, could you tell me wha't your OS? Also I will work on the graphics, I'm using Photoshop CS4, Just need to practic a little more.

j0ye 2018-12-04 16:13

@caspercaper17 Windows 10. You should be able to export this via the unity exporter just fine for win 10. I think the bug has something to do with the start screen. There should be an error in one of the buttons.

caspercaper17 2018-12-04 16:17

Overall it worked once i exported it, but I had some issues with the UI, it might be the resolution that scrues you over, you could try playing it in 1280 x 720 this way the buttons are almost accurate, press the right corner and you should be fine. @j0ye

lastleaf 2018-12-04 18:20

A good start on game jams! You have an interesting idea and delivered it to me! About this game, I think the most thing to improve is the UI. Keyboard control is weird. I would suggest mouse click or drag instead. Your art skill seems great. What about adding more images and animations next time? Keep on!

bartosz 2018-12-04 21:35

I had hard time playing it - UI is not well designed for different resolutions - i had to open it in window mode to be able to see buttons - hitting them was also kinda hard... There is also "Button" text floating around twice.

I get the idea of the game - it's just not really engaging that much, and i'll tell you why:

- instead of use of keyboard - make buttons - make your game ability to give feedback - if you press something - it glows, if you loose - it tells you, this is how you build immersion - crude graphics is not an issue - work on polishing your design, game feedback and make player to do interesting choices - right now i was smacking all the buttons 5s into the game just because i could and it didn't matter in the end... :)

Hope it wasn't too harsh but you can learn (and you probably already did!) a lot from feedback given here!

Good luck and keep jaming!

caspercaper17 2018-12-05 06:07

@bartosz eYou were not at all too rude, when I uploaded this game I expect way more rude comment, Ive had a LOT of usefull feedback, and I have already and certainly will inprove more due too this. Thabks for your feedback

boundtotheearth 2018-12-05 11:42

Congrats on your first game! I'm sorry I gotta rate fairly, but keep up the good work! My first game was muuuuuuch worse hahaha

mrwillowb 2018-12-05 12:52

Nice first game

caspercaper17 2018-12-05 13:12

@boundtotheearth Its really not bad that you rate fairly, so do I. I want to see where I stand compared to other people (and mainly if im not the worst 😆😆). Thanks for playing my game anyways:D

kromeboy 2018-12-05 16:18

Good for a first entry: UI in unity could be hard to master, but it may be the single thing that make or break a game, especially one based on numbers
