so far has worked in edge

anyways great game good luck

atium-addict 2018-12-03 03:17

One of the best tutorial structures I have come across and a great puzzle game overall!

baknik 2018-12-03 03:22

I absolutely adore this entry. The tutorial is great and fits into the narrative. The level design is intuitive but challenging. This game is good fun, and it's really impressive that you pulled this off in the time given. The only issue I came across was when changing perspectives with 'p'. The perspective changed rapidly as I held down the 'p' button instead of just changing once for press. Well done overall!

ravarion 2018-12-03 03:23

I found the depth of the puzzles to be pretty impressive for the amount of time. Good concept with the sacrificing of abilities.

numeralien 2018-12-03 03:24

Super cool game. Excellent tutorial presentation, and the levels are mostly well-designed -- there were a couple of points where I'd jump a gap and be unable to jump it the other way, but it didn't seem to make anything unsolvable. Also, the perspective sometimes made it difficult to tell where an input would land me, especially when there were objects near me. Overall, this is really innovative! Nice work.

boltkey 2018-12-03 03:27

@caveman54 Thanks for testing. I don't test in other browsers during jams because it is just so annoying and boring, and there simply is not enough time to get a game working on all browsers, 1 is just enough .

@atium-addict Thanks. The overal game structure simply invited me to make a tutorial like that.

@baknik Yeah, that "feature" was left there when I adjusted the moving. I could fix it easily, but I think I will leave it in the compo version. It is definitely not a game breaking bug.

Anyway, guys, how far you got and how difficult did you find it? I literally have no idea about difficulty of the levels as it is nearly impossible to test the levels myself when I know the solution upfront.

anyonebacon 2018-12-03 03:29

Pretty fun game, I liked the graphics and the puzzle gameplay. Sound was a bit loud but that could just be me. Good work :)

twopm 2018-12-03 03:30

I really enjoyed how you introduced the mechanics one by one, very intuitive. Nice puzzle design too!

sky-coding 2018-12-03 03:30

Fantastic puzzle game! I wasn't able to finish in a timely manner (I suck at puzzles) but I was very impressed with the level design and game overall.

bug: holding P causes the game to spaz out.

boltkey 2018-12-03 03:35

@Ravarion Thanks! I didn't make nearly as many levels as I wanted, but the few I have am pretty proud of . Quality over quantity, right?

@numeralien About the perspective. It should have been done differently, the "camera" should have been higher. But since I had most of the images and core game done already when I realized that, and I really didn't want to remake all of the assets and also adjust pretty much all of the rendering, I just the added support features of reducing opacity of objects and change of perspective to help with that. Also, you are unable to jump when you are under water, and that's a feature, if you mean that.

boltkey 2018-12-03 03:37

@anyonebacon Yeah, I didn't give too much care to the sound and it definitely is a bit rough around the edges.

@twopm Thanks!

@sky-coding Did you finish it eventually? That's a known bug, but since it is far from game breaking, I am keeping it there.

sky-coding 2018-12-03 03:58

@boltkey I will be honest, no, I got frustrated and gave up. Puzzle games aren't really my thing but I can still appreciate that you made a fantastic game :)

rgrem 2018-12-03 04:12

Good game. Stuck on one of the levels, try later.

khaotom 2018-12-03 04:14

Works fine in Chrome except for one thing. the P button for changing perspective repeats really fast even when i just tap it, making it hard ot get the right perspective. Really fun concept, and I've had some nice "ah ha" moments playing through. I'm not all the way through the game yet, so far made it up to the dark spirit! Nicely done :v:

benbusby 2018-12-03 04:29

Interesting idea! The perspective shift feature changes way too fast for it to be remotely useful, so I never really used that, and the audio was really harsh so I had to mute it. Putting some more time into refining the audio and sound fx would be really worthwhile, especially with a game where almost everything else is really well done. Ultimately I got stuck and gave up, but enjoyed it nonetheless.

boltkey 2018-12-03 04:40

@rgrem Good to hear the levels are not too easy :).

@khaotom Good luck with solving that!

@benbusby You are right. I didn't have much time left for audio, and I just suck at chiptune sound design. I like to record and edit proper sound effects, but it would not fit a pixel art game.

mcrewind 2018-12-03 08:06

Great tutorial, interesting puzzles that get legitimately difficult, overall fun game. The perspective sometimes got a little awkward and the audio could've been improved but they weren't big issues.

erendelous 2018-12-03 11:27

The game is realluy cool! You know, these things like "[r]epeat" are so creative (in my opinion). And It is very creative to make such a story (and do not forget about the sacrificing)... I mean, for me It's the most creative game at this LD:)

linus 2018-12-03 16:46

This game was captivating, the tutorial was superb and wasn't dull at all with the way you integrated a story into the game.

Something that I did not understood was that if you lose your ability to swim you can still jump over water that is 1 block wide. This took a while for me to figure out.

I wasn't able to complete all levels, very difficult game. However, it was enjoyable. I'm not sure which level I got to, would be nice to be able to see that somewhere.

Great job, it was fun to follow your development updates.

zemmi 2018-12-03 18:55

Yes! Love it. The sacrificing of abilities mechanic was really interesting and well executed. Added a lot of depth to the puzzles. I would agree that the [p]erspective button responded too quick and just disoriented me, but it wasn't much of a problem. One perspective seems fine. Also found myself going to the green orb thinking it was related to the green trees. I know the sword symbol was there for that, just my impulse to match the greens I guess.

Excited to see more levels if they get made. Great game.

boltkey 2018-12-03 19:45

@mcrewind Glad to hear some of the levels were challenging! I will improve the audio in post compo, and fix the perspective bug.

@erendelous Thanks! It was a lot of fun writing the narrative!

@linus You can jump over obstacles, and water becomes an obstacle when you cannot swim.

@zemmi I selected red for sword, because sword associates power, and so does red. I chose green for jumping because for some reason it associates agility for me.

vilix64 2018-12-03 22:45

Thank you for providing a manual for savegame wipe.

Nice little game!

zuzupd 2018-12-04 19:29

Nice puzzles, I admire how many good levels you have been able to create.

I had a little problem with perspective. I constantly pushed [r] as [r]otate perspective instead of [p] as change [p]erspective

kerzak 2018-12-04 21:33

Great puzzle game. :) I especially appreciate the in-game tutorial.

g12345 2018-12-05 02:55

I like this time you made a very long introduction and that your puzzles are much smaller in size.

The idea with 4 different elements and different uses is really cool.

I really like the skewed isometric view but somehow it really makes the game a bit harder to guess which squares are empty.

Also, the orbs are a bit hard to guess what they do. I looked at the images inside the orb and I still had to guess. I'd suggest really large sharp icons inside the orbs to let me decide what it meant. For example, that green orb with a very small green + inside was hard to guess, while the blue orb was very clear what it did.

With a bit more levels the game would be great.

Still, I've played many of your LD games now, and it's still well worth playing!

erebus 2018-12-05 03:37

Great job on the puzzles! Thanks for bringing it by the stream!

morg 2018-12-05 09:12

Really interesting puzzles, I enjoyed spending time trying to figure out each of them :) Good game

peachtreeoath 2018-12-06 08:45

I've seen several reverse metroidvania games this LD where you have to sacrifice powers, but this is the first one I've seen that put it into a tight, coherent package. I think the puzzles are VERY well designed, I can't imagine how long those must've taken to make. One thing I liked about this game is that you didn't pull any punches. I tend to be a little wary of puzzle games on LD because I feel like the early levels are a bit boring while the devs are trying to teach the players how to play, but you had such a great, in-lore tutorial that it didn't take long to pick up, and that we could dive right into the juicy parts of the game asap. Tbh I usually tackled the puzzles by trial and erroring a little first, before figuring out the basic chains of events to clear the level. I figured that generally you want to clear trees before giving up the sword (depending on the puzzle) so I liked the feeling of getting better at your puzzles by recognizing level design patterns over time. Very impressive game design, I really hope people don't judge the book by its cover on this one because there is some real good stuff here.

boltkey 2018-12-06 14:58

@peachtreeoath One of the later levels took about 40 minutes to make and it was really interesting and new process for me and I am glad that I have reached a bit out of my comfort zone this time! I always started with a core idea of a level, added a bunch of obstacles and tried to solve it. If I solved it, I made it harder (by replacing some grass with rocks etc), if I thought it was impossible, I adjusted what I thought would help me when solving the level. Then repeat until you get to a tight level. But I quickly ran out of the core ideas. I know there is so much more to do with the level design and I sure do hope to return to it and make it an actual game with some nice number of levels.

I hope (once I get better at designing levels for this) to usually make it impossible to clear all the bushes without picking an orb.

peachtreeoath 2018-12-06 16:33

That's awesome. Over the years, my group has really only done 1 puzzle game (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/how-i-met-your-great-great-grandmother, we usually rely on proc gen levels instead) and we had a very similar approach and thoughts. We tried to start with an initial "theme" to the level, but it was a bit of new territory for us as well so some levels could've been tighter/looser. We revisited it post-jam a little as well because it's just so tempting when you know there's a solid core behind the game. If you do some post-jam updates I look forward to seeing them!

mrleeperry 2018-12-07 23:08

Awesome! Loved all the polish such as the expanding UI instructions and such. Really cool. I'm always in awe of jam games that have puzzles to create while they're being made, that must be such a pain. Well done!

elysiagriffin 2018-12-18 22:08
