This is great! Easily my favourite game from LD42 so far! There is a slight problem with the responsiveness in the main menu, but that's only a minor problem. The sense of panic that starts to set in as the fire grows larger is great, and makes the game really enjoyable. Great work.

liven 2018-08-13 00:33

Hard with keyboard (my xbox one pad did'nt work, it happens)

I think the arrows can be interesting (right hand) or mouse targeting (but I know pad is the best for this sort of game - but not for mine today surprisingly).

And reaaaly cool music !

handle 2018-08-13 04:01

Nice job! The graphics are really interesting, and the mechanics are solid. I think perhaps the fire spreads a bit too fast, but that's subjective.

whoisninja 2018-08-13 04:47

Very nice, but man it's hard. Maybe give some powerups more? Like a suit that makes you invunerable to fire for a few seconds?

blueblu 2018-08-13 11:14

no idea what the blue gem does but a nice short game! Wish there was a web build

mshopf 2018-08-13 16:23

Very hard, crushing mood, nice graphics and excellent music + sound!

Except for the difficulty and the (small) menu screen responsiveness it's very polished. I wonder how long one can actually keep the fire lying low... It get's out of hands extremely fast, and as it spreads the faster the more space it occupies, there is some point of no return when you cannot "win" any more.

swess 2018-08-14 19:27

Thanks everyone for the feedback and comments!

@liven Mouse aiming would be a good idea indeed :) Thanks

@handle It's fast I know.. been playing it all weekend so found it hard for me.. but it's perhaps too quick for a first-time player ahaha (I wanted to implement difficulty levels but ran out of time...)

ngupsilon 2018-08-14 21:43

Well that's intense :D I love the fact that, as powerups (seem) to spawn only in not burning aeras, you get much more items at the end, so it up the pace really nicely!

Good job to you o/

amras0000 2018-08-14 22:19

Can't say I noticed what @ngupsilon mentioned about powerups spawning in safe areas. For me, powerups spawned pretty much wherever, sometimes in completely unreachable spots.

I think there's a point of no return in each game where there is enough fire that even if you were constantly extinguishing it you will die eventually. It fits with the theme, and it does force the game to end eventually, but it's a weird state to be in where you're just waiting for the inevitable and trying to put it off. Not a bad one, just not something I've seen often. Usually these situations just frustrate me but this one was fine.

What I do have a problem with are the water bombs, since it seems impossible to predict where they'll land or what area they'll cover. A crosshair or big blue circle would have been helpful, especially since you can't seem to influence how far they go.

My final score was 1263.

ngupsilon 2018-08-14 22:29

@amras0000 well, I checked again, and you're right, I dont know what have given me this impression, maybe both luck with spawn, and lack of attention ^^"

swess 2018-08-15 14:07

@ngupsilon & @amras0000 : The items spawns where there is no fire, you are right :) But the level of polish I didnt reach is that it CAN spawn on rocks and also that it can spawn very close to fire, which seconds later has spread :P ...

Currently an item spawn each 2 seconds if I remember right... (on a fire-free tile)

Another thing is that visually, the item bounces higher than the actual hitbox, so might be confusing an a little bit on precise here.

Thank you for playing & your feedbacks :)!

swini 2018-08-15 14:40

The effects and graphics look pretty cool. I love the fire! I like them a lot! Nice job!

ametentia 2018-08-15 14:49

Pretty sweet, took me a second to grab the controls because I skipped the instructions and by then I was burning up already. Really challenging but I like that. Nice to see a Linux build and it ran with no issues. Only suggestion would be to add arrows towards the fire extinguishers and water bombs. Otherwise awesome and good job! //Fletch

monetai 2018-08-15 15:07

The Hexels force is strong in you =) The art is really nice and the game is fun. I've really appreciated the character controller.

untitled-studios 2018-08-15 15:10

This is probably my favorite LD42 game if not my favorite jam game of all time. The mechanics are fun, the pace is intense, the graphics are unique, and if you start to give up, man that music just keeps pushing you forward. This game is truly incredible and you should be proud of your achievement. If this game doesn't make top ten in fun or audio i'll be disappointed with the Ludum Dare system. Take my 5/5's good sir.

p.s. my only complaints are that the main menu doesn't quite make it to the standard set by the rest of the graphics and it would be nice if you regenerated hp.

jegus9 2018-08-15 15:17

Thanks for the Linux build. It's a really short game, wish the fire would scale just a little bit slower so I could enjoy the game for a longer time, and as it's already been said, there seems to be an issue with the menu screen responsiveness.

Aside from that, good job. I like it when compo entries have an OST, it takes quite an effort to try and compose something in such a short amount of time.

rustycrow 2018-08-15 15:47

Most of the LD games i have player never seame to use the Theme well, But this game has a very cool take on running out of space. The game is very well made but the balance can seams a little off( water grenades :frog: :gun:) this type of game Screams for mouse controls and stack able/ storeable water. I was trying really hard to aim my extinguisher at times to grab another extinguisher engulfed in flames but the controls just got in my way just needed that extra bit of aim. The addition of music/sound and art is a real big + But the real winner for me, in your game is the use of the THEME very cool way of implementing to the game play Well done @swess

Top score i got was 2327 i think was a little hard to see with your font. my Strat was hold a position with a lot of extinguishers and tornado spray :frog:, but bad RNG can lead to low spawns so most of the time i ended opp RUNNING OUT OF SPACE :japanese_goblin: :frog: :gun: OMG.png

swess 2018-08-15 16:31

@monetai / @swini Thank a lot :) I'm not a visual artist (more software engineer XD), and decided to give this style a go since I knew how to use illustrator haha happy to see that it's appreciated :)

@rustycrow / @jegus9 Thanks for you feedbacks & critiques! Balance and menus bug fixes are definitely the things I knew wasn't as polished as I wanted :p Didn't have time to playtest it enough :/ and was biased for the difficulty since I played it more than anybody ahaha but... anyway :p Glad you liked it :)

@untitled-studios Wow thank you mate! It was my second GameJam and my first Ludum Dare! It touches me a lot! :) Thank you for your kind words!

acuriosity 2018-08-15 20:20

Graphics all worked well together, and the music and sounds were also well polished..

Controls were super difficult... my XB1 controller didnt work. so on the keyboard I had to be running towards the flame in order to extinguish it...

Items not stacking bummed me out a little, I picked up 3 waters thinking here we go, imma make this fire my B*$#@... but when i threw the first one and had no more items in my hands i was soooooo sad...

fakefirefly 2018-08-15 21:38

This was pretty fun, even though I was playing on keyboard. The water balloons were my favorite since they had pretty good range. The music was good too!

My only complaint is the lack of mouse controls. Otherwise, this was great!

rexpeppers 2018-08-15 21:44

Faced paced and great

lootgrounds 2018-08-15 21:51

Nice entry! The pattern for fire spreading can be more different, but anyway it is fun.

arche-san 2018-08-15 21:55

Score : 1844. It's not high but it's a good start.

This is a pretty solid entry for a second gamejam. Very addictive and the pacing is really good. I'm making circles with fire extinguishers. It's pretty effective to stay alive but don't know if it's the best way ha ha!

Good job! :)

jlv 2018-08-15 23:38

Great game ! While it is a little too hard to be thoroughly enjoyed, I loved the idea and the first few seconds of each playthrough, as the game is so fun when the fire is still manageable ! I am really fond of your use of trixels as well as the background music. Really, all your game needs is some balance, and you've got yourself a little gem. Great work !

blinkenlights 2018-08-16 17:17

Certainly interesting and suitable for the theme, well done! The visuals look very interesting, though they don't go easy on the eyes, and the audio is very good. All in all, a solid entry.

stefan-jovanovic 2018-08-20 21:06

Nice concept! I liked the gameplay even though I think that the mouse controls for aiming would be more suitable. Also it seems to me that there is a bit too much of chromatic abberation. Other than that great game! Keep up the good work!

cristihkj 2018-08-21 17:22

Great game! Very cool and interesting! :D

wabble 2018-08-21 18:43

Cool game, I suggest having an objective other than surviving the most time!

remco 2018-08-27 12:44

Triangle-based art in 2D ... nice style choice! Also, the level of polish is amazing for a compo-entry! (It 'even' has an exit button -- why do so many other Unity entries seem to forget this?) The hazy fire shader is a subtle but nice effect as well. I only have trouble getting the controller back when I switch out of the game writing a bit of review, but that gave me the chance to try the keyboard layout as well. ... I can see why you recommend the controller, but fortunately it's still very playable.

Occasionally there is a piece of fire I can't seem to extinguish... it _seems_ to me this sometimes happens when you try to do it with a tile of fire that has just landed.

Gameplay is challenging (in a nice way), but I suspect it'll probably become repetitive if I would only manage to stay alive longer.

Maybe make the extinguisher and the water-balloon take up a different slot? It would hurt the simplicity a little bit, but may be worth it for the increased strategy and would help you stay alive juts a little bit longer. Or maybe just make it so you can pick up multiple items (with a low limit of course).

Small typo: 'to protect youR land'.
