LD42 — Running out of space

Demonologist by Ghen 2018-08-13T00:41:14Z

I really like the concept of using temperature as health, and attacking increasing the temperature - it gives it a sort of blood magic feel to it. Admittedly I did skip reading the journal, but hey - it's 1:30AM here and I'm tired, don't hold it against me. I felt like the demons weren't really doing anything to me and were more of a nuisance that I needed to get rid of, and I tried to attack the fire totem but it seemed to have no effect (though maybe the answer to that was in the guide). Additionally, I'm not sure where the theme comes into the game, though I did only play a little. The graphical style is good, I like the sound effects, and what I saw of the journal looked pretty cool. Overall the game seems pretty neat, but there are a few problems that seem to need ironing out.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but I can't seem to place Spacers. It seems like a neat concept, though!

The Shrinking Dungeon by Tom-98 2018-08-13T00:33:47Z

I really like the concept of the player's attacks making the room smaller, and overall I think the game is pretty fun, if a little repetitive. If I had to pick a problem with it, I'd say running away from fights is too advantageous, since enemies have enough health that engaging with them is too risky and is only really worth doing if they're blocking your path. I think the spells you can cast so far are cool, though the game could benefit from a few more (though I understand that's not much of an option due to the 48 hour time limit). Overall I think there are definitely some cool ideas in this game, and it's constructed pretty well. I think if you put aspects of this game into a larger project (such as the room shrinking when the player acts), it would definitely make for an interesting game.

This is great! Easily my favourite game from LD42 so far! There is a slight problem with the responsiveness in the main menu, but that's only a minor problem. The sense of panic that starts to set in as the fire grows larger is great, and makes the game really enjoyable. Great work.

Great game and interesting concept. I think the only problem with the game is remembering all the recipes is difficult, but that's more a fault of my own than the game's. I really like the visual style, and the background music and sound effects are nice too. Good job.

Serpent's Souls by impbox 2018-12-02T21:46:58Z

This game is amazing! If it had a save function, I would play this even after the jam is over. I wish I could play more, but I want to get onto rating other games.

I think the method of unit-based actions for each tile is a very interesting approach, and the building tile system is both easy to use and fun to manage. The rebellion system also serves well as a secondary goal for the player, and the limited number of actions per turn makes the game feel almost like chess; the player has to plan and carefully consider their moves before doing anything, which I think really makes the gameplay satisfying and interesting.

If you update the game at any point, especially if it's to add a save system, please let me know!

One Life Ain't Enough by oda 2018-12-02T22:27:58Z

Very nice! I've seen this kind of idea in a lot of games, but I think it really works a lot better in this small area, and with limited player movement. I definitely think this would work well as a mobile game if it were to be fleshed out a little.

As with Malghoul, I encountered respawning bugs a few times where I got stuck or could jump over walls when respawning. I think the solution to this would probably just be to lock player movement when respawning, or have them respawn already on the ground. I also managed to walk off-screen a few times, which should probably be restricted.

Overall I like the game, and while it's a little short I had a good time playing it. Good work for your first game jam, I look forward to seeing what you make next time!

Flufy Hat Co. by JustWall Games 2018-12-02T22:15:26Z

Well, that was... something.

The sound and art are great, and the whole atmosphere of the game is really well-constructed - it was so horrifically sinister the entire time.

The game is so cruel and sadistic, having to choose from three adorable animals and then being made to slowly chop it up, that it feels like the kind of thing you would see in a documentary about violent video games; I imagine most people would get a few disapproving looks if they were seen playing this (this sounds like a criticism, but it isn't - I actually really like how much the game leans into this theme).

If I had to address one issue with a game, I would say that it feels like the player isn't progressing towards anything, but just aimlessly brutalising their prey - though maybe this is the point of the game.

Overall, I enjoyed trying this out, even if I did feel disgusted with myself the entire time. Great work!
