That's a good game given the development time limit (8.5 hrs). Good job! > > Next LD I probably won’t stick to the theme as much if it prevents me from making something nicer! Completely agree with you! Sometimes the theme seems like the biggest constraint. Good thing that it's optional

triplefox 2018-08-13 06:49

This is simple, but it turned out pretty well! I also did a game of this type. If you'd like to see how I approached it, I did a whole devblog - [here's the first post in the series](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/zero-grace-megadrive/ld42-live-blog-from-theme-to-design).

endurion 2018-08-13 07:02

Not bad for the little time. Overall it's just a simple snake clone though, and doesn't seem particularely challenging. Maybe adding another gimmick would make it a bit more interesting.

reimari 2018-08-13 07:19

@endurion Yeah, those two things made me not even want to submit the game. I hope (or, make sure) I'll have something more interesting next LD :)

dries-vuylsteke 2018-08-13 10:26

A little simple, but you did submit so that is the important part. Given it was made in 8.5 hours I'm sure you learned a lot while making it, making this jam a success.

The snake graphic was cute and kept my interest in a snake game longer than I would have expected. The controls felt a little slow if not pressed exactly right.

Over all it was a nice little snake clone.

dunin 2018-08-13 12:44

I like snake, and it is well executed, but I don't know if the wall things add something...

(there is a strategy that consists of walking along the walls to prevent them from advancing, but it's for superplayers...)

jakub-kazimierski 2018-08-13 14:38

Well executed snake with good spin on traditional gameplay.

starven 2018-08-13 14:40

Nice work (especially for the time), as dries vuyisteke said I think the snake graphic is actually kinda cute and definitely makes it feel like there was a bit of love/effort put into what is otherwise just a snake clone (with a nice twist!).

I managed 54 food as my best run, not sure how that stacks up.

reimari 2018-08-13 14:59

@starven The highest score I've managed is around that as well. I wanted to add a leaderboard but writing out the privacy statement to comply with the GDPR would have pushed me into the jam :P

dsthedragon 2018-08-13 15:08

it was really good snake clone and the graphics were really good. Nice One

pixels-everywhere 2018-08-13 17:06

Great idea, fits the theme very well

inferture 2018-08-14 02:09

Simple yet charming and fits perfectly into the theme, nice one

mdiyo 2018-08-14 19:15

Clever.

Snake already fits the theme, more or less. You constantly run into the problem where your body is eating up the space where your head could go. Make the walls close in too, and you have yourself something compelling.

fenderbate 2018-08-14 20:05

Oh a snake game I haven't thought about that  shrinking the room is a nice twist.

If you're struggling with the theme then check out a streamer they usually come up with ideas together with the viewers when the jam starts and you can take one of those

reimari 2018-08-14 20:14

@fenderbate I've tried doing that a couple of times but for a jam/compo I don't really like working on (effectively) someone else's game or idea.

I do realize what I ended up with probably isn't the most original thing (which is why I wasn't happy with the result). But I did come up with an extra twist on this game a couple of hours ago which I will try to build into a more complete game outside of Ludum Dare!

apples-mmmmmmmm 2018-08-15 03:10

Mechanics work. You followed the theme. Graphics are simple and nice, the fade in with new walls is a nice touch. It would be nice to add in a bit of background music, and sound effects. Nice job for your first submission!

hagrida 2018-08-17 10:13

Nice mechanics! All its missing is pretty much sounds

dragongino 2018-08-17 10:13

snake game with a twist. it looks good for the small development time that you got to make. I hope you can expand the game even further out.

timbals 2018-08-17 10:20

A simple snake clone that was executed nicely.

captaindreamcast 2018-08-17 10:30

Everything past 50 is incredibly intense, I made it to 69 before ramming into myself. I agree with what everyone said, it's a very clever take on the theme and one that's very fun to play too.

reimari 2018-08-17 13:17

@dragongino I'm already working on a new version that has an extra twist that makes it even more challenging and different compared to this version ;)

anaconda-games 2018-08-18 11:26

Nice little game knowing your time limit

cope 2018-08-19 20:04

Fun little game

riptidestudio 2018-08-20 15:29

Nice, but too simple. Anyway, pretty good game

erikkire 2018-09-01 20:47

Snake is always fun! But it is also a very well-used game mechanic. A shrinking room is a nice variation but I think you have to add more non-standard snake features to have some variations. Maybe the room should decrease depending on the side you eat the food from or that it is possible to hold back the walls with your tail or something.
