not bad, not bad, now you!

andrew-friedman 2018-08-13 17:15

Mac OS version isn't working :(

cobear25 2018-08-13 17:17

I tried to download the mac version but I get this message `You can’t open the application “Shrinking” because it may be damaged or incomplete.` Not sure what the issue is.

Really nice. Some stages are really a close call. An alternative key to space would be good, as my keyboard won't let me press two cursor keys plus space. And it's really mean to have to do it all over again, when you die :)

Solid little game!

gord10ahmet 2018-08-13 17:36

I think the difficulty is too harsh, I wish we restarted the level when we died.

xcvzxc 2018-08-13 17:36

great game! it requires some dexterity and tactics haha Too bad there is no any soundtrack

sundancekid 2018-08-13 17:36

Feels like the kind of game I'd get addicted to on my phone. Challenging though, I ran out of space multiple times. It's a bit harsh that it puts you back at the beginning when you die. Nice :)

drdolan 2018-08-13 17:48

I like it! Although I would have preferred to have checkpoints.

neu-eric 2018-08-13 18:01

I think the wall jump feels pretty strange. And its kinda annoying that if you fail once you have to start from the complete beginning again. But your game is still pretty nice :)

drikdrok 2018-08-13 19:44

@andrew-friedman & @cobear25, I'll fix the MacOS Version ASAP

drikdrok 2018-08-13 19:53

@xcvzxc Thanks! Yeah sadly I couldn't compose a simple piece of music for the life of me :P

drikdrok 2018-08-13 20:43

@andrew-friedman & @cobear25 New link should work now :)!

potatolain 2018-08-14 00:12

Don't really have anything to say that hasn't already been said - some form of checkpoints (even just every 5 levels) would've been nice, but it's not bad as-is. I found the simple graphics quite appealing. Thanks for a fun game!

andrew-friedman 2018-08-14 01:18

I eneded up playing on my windows desktop. The game is hard which I love. Audio was really loud for me and idk if it was just my computer but it scared me every time lol. Great job overall :)

cobear25 2018-08-14 19:59

Ok, finally got a look at it. It's really fun, I like how the shrinking doesn't restart on each level, so it's kind of a speed running type game. The one thing it's missing is some cool music, but obviously you opted out of that judging category, so great job!

tjakka5 2018-08-16 00:23

Fun game! It was quite difficult though. I didn't manage to get past level 11. I've made a video about it as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zt5x4SrkhKk&feature=youtu.be

Very interesting mechanic that the "time" sort of carries over from level to level. This makes every single level super important, even the easier first levels. That's some good game design right there! At the same time the "time" does reset every X levels, or at least it did on the turret lvl (was it 7 or 8? Can't quite remember), so you are not totally screwed if you mess up a level or two.

I like how you introduce each mechanic one by one and then use these mechanics in many different ways, your game basically has a build in tutorial, and that's great for all games but specially for Ludum Dare entries.

I also recorded some gameplay so that you can see your game in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXG03lKcWc8&

Great entry! :smile:

I like the idea that the ceiling height carries over from level to level. However, it got frustrating having to repeat the whole thing once you fail. You could put checkpoints at ceiling-reset levels to prevent this to some degree. The aspect ratio you choose is really cool!

rubixnoob13 2018-08-28 05:00

Fun game, although I do agree that it's rather brutal to start all the way over when you die.

Great job though! :)

blinkenlights 2018-08-31 18:44

Pity I can't try it, I'm Linux/HTML5 only :(

drikdrok 2018-08-31 20:00

@blinkenlights I've added a Linux version. You'll have to download the [Love2D Game Engine](https://love2d.org/) tho :/

The most fun compo game I tested so far! What I would like to improve: - Frustrating to have to restart from the beginning after death. Would like to continue on the curent level. - Large step but anyway... Add some graphics, would like to have visual feedback on running, jumping and wall jumping to improve the controls.

foxisxiii 2018-09-01 18:42

It's a really funny game, I couldn't pass the level 15 so it's difficulty it's quite challenging. I think it will have a better experience if the game has music, of any kind, but not having it its good to make you enter really to the game. I would only change two things: -Use the arrows or letters to move, not only letters, because for some people (like me) using two hands to play gives more sensation of control than doing all with only one. -In the jump, it will be much better if you can control the height of the jump depending on the time you press the space key, because this game is a rouge like, and its frustrating when you are on high levels, and losing just because you cant control the height of the jump, because lots of times just doing a small jump you can win. And if this is not possible, you can just add two difficulty modes, the hard mode, that it's restarting from the first level when you lose, and the normal mode, where you have checkpoints to restart from when you die. But I really liked the game!! Keep on it!

johnny-turbo 2018-09-01 20:09

Really liked your game! Unfortunately, this game was too difficult for me to beat (I kinda suck at video games though :P).

Though I really did like your overall concept and though it fit the theme very well! I didn't particularly like how the gray ceiling continued it's progress throughout most of the levels. I think it is an interesting idea but it meant that you needed to have perfect platforming on levels leading up to a tough one so you would have enough time to reach the end.

Art and sound are simple but effective.

One other thing I think can be improved is the control scheme. I prefer to play 2D platformers with the arrow keys and the up (or W) key to be my jump button. Putting the jump button on the space bar seemed to make it a bit more tough for me to execute the quick platforming maneuvers you need to make to beat the game. Would be nice to have the option to choose the controls you prefer.

Overall I did enjoy my time with the game and I watched your playthrough to see what I missed out on (definitely too tough for me to beat). Congratulations on making a complete game in the short amount of time that you did!!

yayiest 2018-09-01 21:36

I really like the idea, the controls are very good and the graphics are nice and simple. My only suggestion would be that the buttons could be triggered without jumping or the jump was shorter if you tapped the spacebar and didn't hold it. But overall really good! :smiley:

eric-kulbiej 2018-09-02 00:02

Your game is very nice to play. The general impact is positive. As a professional game dev I would suggest... just kidding haha Nonetheless, if you want to work on this project more I suggest making a difficulty incresing algorithm. Graphics - very nice. Controls are also working very well. Maybe you could also take a glimpse at my game? I already enlarged it into a wholesome Android game :)

manimal 2018-09-02 06:27

Really hardcore game. The difficulty is really hard, the player has to be really deep into this game to br able to beat it. Nice entry. At the begining I was like "Why he put levels in this order" and after a while I actualy get the concept. The walljump seems tricky to me but dude, I really enjoy this game.
