I know you say a joystick is recommended, but I suggest adding the ability to scroll through your inventory using the scrollbar on a mouse, would make playing with keyboard and mouse easier. It's a bit slow at first, and im not sure if it's possible to recover health, but it's easy enough to understand while playing which is good. I like how the fruit are impatient and will harvest themselves if you don't. :P

This game is a great morality tale about the world food supply. Good job!

ekkoekko 2018-04-25 04:29

I like the concept in this game. Good job guys!

megrabbit 2018-04-25 04:57

It's hard to tell when you're hitting the worms, but I managed to get a hoe and I tilled the earth all over the place. Nice job. Really enjoyed the music, too.

nardandas 2018-04-25 05:06

@Seanharrs I know! I wanted to add scroll wheel support but I couldn't figure out how with the unity input system. Something I'll have to learn for next time I guess.

@MegRabbit I thought the weird spasm showed it well, but next time I'll be sure to add a red flash and a knockback. I meant to add a red flash but I didn't have time. Thanks about the music though, I really enjoyed making that piece. It was the last day and I only took an hour!

Cute little game, I like the minimalistic cute graphics and controls were very smooth to handle. Good job :)

karai17 2018-04-25 06:49

There is a severe lack of feedback that left me unsure if my actions did anything. I didn't know that I had planted a seed until I realized my number of seeds went down, some particles and a little sprout would have been nice. The D-pad input was also off, on my Xbobx One controller, I had to use D-Down to move back left.

Otherwise, neat little title.

wramp 2018-04-25 06:55

Fun little game, I like the worms xD so cute xd

seanharrs 2018-04-25 08:08

@nardandas Try Input.GetAxis("Mouse ScrollWheel"), a value > 0 is scroll up and value < 0 is scroll down. Make sure it's set up in the Input Manager (I think it is by default, but might not be).

likirus 2018-04-25 16:17

nice and relaxing game, the controls felt a little weird to me, I would have prefered to control the walking/looking direction with the mouse instead of A and D, and use A/D as strafe left/right

raiyumi 2018-04-25 19:46

Cute game with simple graphics. Some problems were the inventory scrolling for keyboard(awkward buttons)and weird camera angle, but besides that, nice job!

balance686 2018-04-25 20:09

Interesting idea! The controls took a little getting used to but after that it was smooth sailing. The music is very peaceful and suited to the game. I dig the worms! I'd like to see some kind of indication of when seeds are being planted (maybe a sound effect?) just to be a bit more tactile. Great title as well haha good job with this!

tiberon 2018-04-25 20:21

I like the idea very much! However the camera felt a bit weird and made it very difficult just to "scan around" and see what's happening. Also some feedback for actions would be nice (planting seeds, plants growing etc. Now you really couldn't tell if a plant was growing in a soilbatch or not, and how long would it take to grow up), but all in all a good entry :)

chris-coe 2018-04-25 21:56

I think I screwed myself over by digging too many holes. Couldn't handle the worms! Haha. I think fruits are sometimes falling through the floor when you harvest a plant, and I can get infinite fertilizer at no cost.

nardandas 2018-04-25 23:17

@Seanharrs I'll make sure to remember that, thanks! I wasn't sure if I could use the mouse like an axis.

-----

@Lik0irus @Tiberon I really wanted to make the camera more controllable, but when I had about an hour left I couldn't figure it out fast enough. In addition, I found hats more important. I don't know if that was the right choice, and your feedback makes me think it wasn't. Still enjoyed the hats, but I agree the camera needs work.

-----

@Raiyumi I agree on the keyboard, I hadn't tested with keyboard much so I didn't even realize it. I think there's a control scheme that works though if you abandon the mouse. Left hand on WASD, E, and Space, and right hand on arrows, though I'll admit it's not the best

-----

@Chris Coe Yay! The screwing yourself over with worms was one of the goals. I also noticed the fruit falling through the floor, though I couldn't figure out why that happened. Good to know it wasn't just me. I didn't know about the infinite fertilizer bug, thanks for reporting that!

-----

@Karai17 Sorry about the mistakes on the XBox One controller, I hadn't tested with it and assumed the bindings were the same, sorry about that! This will be the last LD I do with unity's input system!

-----

Everyone - I realized the issue with the feedback on the seeds but hadn't realized how much it would impact gameplay. I always think about feedback when playing other games but I underestimated the way it would affect this entry. I'll make sure to make player feedback a top priority in future entries.

Thanks for the feedback all of you! I really appreciate it!

Hey, fun little game! trying to see what fruits I could get was fun (I needed those hats!), I like the simplicity of it and I really liked the music. I also ran into the fruit falling through the ground bug, but not enough to drag the game down. Good job!

theamazingb 2018-04-26 03:13

It was hard to tell if what I was doing was working. Very little feed back for the player. The music is decent

lyrcaxis 2018-04-26 10:37

Cool entry! Love the guy's animation :-D The reap time was fair given how the the game is centered aroung farming, but we could use additional things to do meanwhile(LIKE MORE MONSTERS :-D bullet avoidance/or even collectibles).

Overall I liked it!

travis-spuller 2018-04-27 16:37

Nice entry man, these are my thoughts

**Good**

The hat was a really nice addition. Things like that make a game a bit more quirky and fun

The animation of the big work was quite good for it crawling around and attacking

Music was nice to set the mood

The animation of the lever bobbing effect was a good touch, though maybe not have it do that if you can't use it. Like the hoe at the beginning

**Improvements**

I though that the inventory was huge compared to what you can get, maybe I didn't get everything

It'd be good to have some sound effect to inform you that you are taking damage. When you get hit or when you hit something

The ground needs better texture to symbolize actual grass. You could even do chunks of grass in the art style you are doing which should be simple and adding trees would be nice.

If you continue with this game, I think it would be cool to have a tower defense system, kind of like factorio, but with farms

The signs on the machine show the text from behind them. Fix that

Nice game, see you in the next jam!

estacaomarte 2018-04-28 00:15

Its amazing how every game i open to see its so unique in some way! Good job! :)

cristiano-m-garcia 2018-05-03 19:57

Good job! Cool game!

I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.

I hope you continue with the project.

A good start to a game. I think the main thing, as has been said, is more player feedback. I couldn't exactly tell how to harvest crops or even plant them, largely because of a lack of feedback, and because the fruit-falling-through-ground bug made it hard to know if I was really harvesting things correctly.

I believe your character, and perhaps the hoed ground model, would look better with smooth shading enabled.

Better camera controls could also be a plus. With a third-person view, it's kind of expected that you can see what is behind you, but it doesn't really work out that way in this case. A first person view might actually be better for this specific game, but I couldn't say for sure.
