Oh my god, I love this! Probably my favorite so far! The art is cute and the gameplay is unique and fun as heck!

Great game! I love the looks and sounds. They fit together well!

The gameplay is quite clever. Doesn't take too long to get the hang of it.

The only issue I had was that I found it difficult to get new cards when low on health. I think the cards that the enemies shoot should be differentiated a bit more, since I might have missed some shield cards because they look so similar to bullet cards. And it gets really hectic trying to find a card you need if there are a lot on the screen.

The aspect ratio is awkward on my small screen, but that's about the only complaint I have. Great game!

Great game! Enjoying all of the games that have combined a card game into the other genre but this is a particular favourite. The control is really smooth just clicking to direct the ship. Well done!

@blubberquark yeah that was something i was worried about, but i figured at the worst the bottom gets cut off which isnt very important anyway

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

I'm not a fan of bullet hell since I'm too bad that sort of games. But this one, this one is special! I can totally see how I spend hours playing it (once you fix the death refresh mechanism.

Great entry! This mix of ideas worked really well!

I did find that after a couple tries the core loop got a bit too easy. Because you have so much control over movement with the superhot time mechanic, it's pretty rare that you actually get hit unintentionally. In fact, I often found myself spinning around for ages, waiting for pickups to drop so I could progress. Something that might make it a bit more challenging is making the superhot mechanic less than 100% effective, i.e. make it so that even when you're not doing anything, things still move, just at a really slow pace.

btw, I saw you mention on twitter that this was the first time you tried a hand-drawn art style; you should try it more often, because it turned out really cute!

@Levimoe Alright, i should've done this way earlier but i've made an executive decision under the guise of the "bug fixes" rule to allow restarting, and added the change to the description. I was too much in the mindset of "it's done, don't change anything" and i should've just done that haha

@Sean S. LeBlanc oooh that's an interesting idea with the slowly progressing time! And thanks! you're right i should, i really surprised myself with how well it turned out :)

so shiny, soooooo gooood!

aeveis 2018-04-26 04:50

very nice! I was able to beat it after a couple tries. Good balancing with getting hurt and collecting the cards. I'm glad I was able to be very precise with the movement. Good job!

The cards looked polished, I liked the sound effects but hoped there was music... I loved the mechanics you introduced to simple space shooter. The game is well balanced and there are diverse effects. Art on the cards illustrates the purpose clearly. Great work!

This was one of my favorite games so far. I would love to play an expanded version. I definitely wish there had been some way to save the game before the boss, because I died so many times, yet was determined to defeat it.

zirrrus 2018-05-03 18:36

This has a very neat style and is pretty fun, well done!

vfqd 2018-05-04 11:30

I enjoyed this a lot, it's one of the most interesting and well done uses of the theme I've come across so far!

kpded 2018-05-04 12:08

Well done! The game is very interesting to play and artstyle fits perfectly

Really cool concept. I like the superhot mechanic and that you can move slower or faster as you please. Makes it easy for new players to learn the mechanics well and lets experienced players skip past the easy stuff. Also, pretty art you have there :)

I found the game a little bit confusing at first. I thought I was supposed to pick up the bullets because they were cards. Game was also a little bit difficult. Remember that you have spent a whole weekend practicing, but new players only have ~5 minutes. Maybe decrease the fire rate of the enemies a little. Higher spawn rate of new cards would also be appreciated, as I feel like I wander around a lot because I have no cards left. And also, that bomb thing is really difficult to dodge. Oh, and a health bar on the enemies would be lovely.

Overall, though, really good entry. Good job! :)

This is my favourite game that I've played so far. The only issue that stood out to me was that it's hard to tell when the shield has timed out because the timer dots are so small and they have a similar colour to the background. Also, I sometimes seem to receive damage even when the shield is active, for example when I tried to pick up cards from the circle enemy. Otherwise very addictive gameplay and nicely polished. Good job!

torcado 2018-05-04 18:16

@t-mw thanks! you may have been taking damage from grabbing more than 6 cards, which will destroy the first card and deal one damage to you. this is just to prevent players from clearing all the cards with a shield

t-mw 2018-05-04 21:46

Ah yes, that must've been it! I missed that in the instructions.

Cute graphics! I included it in my Ludum Dare 41 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIle2FLl2RM

I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.

I hope you continue with the project.

Playing post rating, and despite only being based on 25ish votes, I think you're game is really good and you deserve to rank well in some categories. Good work :)
