Nice litte calm game. :D
Great game and the WebGL wasn't too bad. I really liked the graphics. You can check out my game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/basketball-wars
When I started the game, it felt really cool to explore the area. I see that the first release version was buggy - I couldn't get the shotgun to plant the seeds, but playing the bug-fix version I was able to plant seeds. The slowing growing animations for the plants was fun to watch! The controls (E for everything) were a little weird, and I would prefer to use E (or action button) to climb the ladder instead of automatically going up. Also wish I could carry the shotgun and the pistol with me at the same time! Overall, it was fun, just needs a little polish!
Thanks for your highly appreciated feedback! We decided we will turn this idea into a real game (this is just something like a technical demo haha). We will start the development really soon and we will of course fix the design flaws like the teleporting upstairs (it was planned to climb the ladder), weird controls, missing animations, static look etc in the official game release. This was our very first game and we are proud we finally made it to a fairly well playable state :) We are even more proud that you guys like it!
We will be streaming ludum dare games during the play and rate timespan on our twitch channel. feel free to leave a follow and head over if you'd like to watch: http://www.twitch.tv/firesplashtv
@ryan-michaels The point witth your shotgun problem is weird. We did not touch this logic in the bugfix. The bugfix is only about Coins getting lower than zero (we did notimplement the gameover call accidentially) and two typos on sprites...
Probably there was a mistake in your understanding of the tutorial? You can't plant using the shotgun. Shotgun is for preparing farmland (and vaproising plants haha) and the other weapons are for planting (with different ranges btw - try to shoot the farmland from the window upstairs using th sniper ;) )
Oh and the point with not being able to carry two weapons was intended to make the game a bit harder but in the final version there will be much huger and mor ipressive things (did you notice the tank? ;) )
I love this so much!!
Very interesting theme. However, it needs some bug-fixing.
@maloy-quinn Yes we had a few issues with unity and lacked a few hours of time in the end. Could you tell us what bugs you experienced? I will try to do a second bugfix release by the end of this week (have to go to work).
@firesplash-entertainment the biggest bug I faced was in the WebGL version, where I could not look down. (of course, I rated the windows version, I just think improvement on this version would be good for accessibility). Overall though, I think this is a great game.
@maloy-quinn thanks for the positive feedback! Yes the WebGL is quite cancer. Probably the reason is Unity Beta... It has a quite huge amount of issues the other versions don't habe. even mechanics working differend. e.g. the tank fell through ground on game startup... Only for WebGL...
@Firesplash Entertainment I know what you mean... 3d seems to screw up immensely in WebGL. 2d seems to work fine though
@maloy-quinn Yes. Thats what I experienced in my test projects as well as while playing past LD games
I like the concept a lot, I think I played one other game that had a similar mechanic but it pretty sure this one is more engaging
It was really buggy, but hell it would be enjoyable! With a little adjustments here and there, you can get a cooool game out of this
Art is very nice. I like the farming-shooting hybrid. Just one point - When picking up wheat, by pressing e i do not know whether i'm picking wheat up or changing ammo - then again you did say there were bugs. Have you released an updated version?
10/10 for the artwork.
Feel free to stream my game on your Twitch channel: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/caves-of-mimicry :D.
sorry i can't download it in fact any LD game i try to download get a message saying "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unvailable click OK to try again or enter an altemate path to a folder containing the installation package 'winzip_en_64.msi' in the box below" anyone know how to fix this?
@ArmyAnts-Studios try to reinstall winzip or 7zip that should fix your problem. @Rayne did you play WebGL-Version? We know that has bugs we can't fix at the moment. Seems to be speciality of WebGL-Exportt unfortunately and we did and do not focus on WebGL. That is just for a first idea about the game. What bugs did you encounter? I do just know about smaller flws like what @mza said the discrepancy between inventory switching and picking up items. We noticed that too late and changing means code changes in several places as well as testing. I will fix this by the end of the week. Sorry am a bit busy at the moment. @Cryovr thanks for the nice words also to you :)
I am - and I bet @siml is also - very proud that you like our game :) We are planning to add much more stuff and some tweaks (to make the game not get boring over time) and release a steam version :) But this will last quite some time :)
well.. they certainly are two incompatible game types lol. i was expecting something to come and attack or steal my crops lol. not bad, some more varied sounds would have been good and picking up each crop individually was a little tedious. but its well explained and i didn't get stuck not knowing what to do :)
@Brendan-Toy Thanks for your review :) Yes we wanted to implement different sounds for weapons as well as animations for weapons (actually the revolver is animated but we didn't get the animation to play... something must have went wrong so we removed the code for it to not get stuck with it).
Attacking or stealing was too mainstream for us :D But in our steam release there will in fact be some enemies but we will keep the current logic (preparing and planting using weapons) but just add occasionally appearing enemies. But more enemies that fit into the farming character.
It will stay a farming game and you will use crazy weapons for crazy tasks. Stay tuned ;) But the steam release will last quite a bit. We do not want to make a game like DayZ being in alpha for ages ;)
Oh! Also the picking up multiple crops at once is adressed in my mind. We will add a few machines in the release game then.
It is a cool concept. I would have like to see a visual representation of the cool-down for weapons. Also the interact key was also the same as the toolbar selection key which was bothersome. I also think the hit box on the crops were too small it was hard to get all the crops. Otherwise it was a good base of a game.
@Swarrly and @AwesomeAlliterationAlliance thanks for rating out game! Yes I heard the point with the controls several times. We will do a bugfix release by the end of the week. I think we will move the inventory selections buttons. The Collider is in fact a bit too small for radish. Corn should be fine as it was our testing crop. Wheat is somewhere between. Unfortunately we were lacking a bit of time to test that throughly.
Holding down E is not intended for our real game (this is just like a preview) but we will likely implement some tools to make harvesting easier. In fact we planned to only put 4 plants per tile but it did not look that good :D
Well... To be honest, pointing at the field and clicking is a pretty standard thing in farming sim. and he idea that this is done with a shotgun is... while fun, but realistically doesn't hange a lot.
Also the harvesting was a little bit confusing. First of all it was kind of pixelhunty. Then for some reason the avatar wouldn't collect more than 24 grains... and the harvest was way way way more than this. Basically after 3 trim to sell the harvest, and the field not getting cleared in any noticable way I gave up.
Also I am not sure that 2 extra fields were neccesary, given that handling even one field was tedious.
The graphics are nice though. And it was surprisingly satisfying to watch the crops grow.
Oh... And some better telegraphing that the crops are reasy for harvest might have helped. Like made the harvestable plants a differendt color (like keep this yellow colo for harvestable wheat, and make the growing one greener.)
@Hilvon thanks for you review :) Yes I agree with you when it comes to the standard farming sim-thing. We planned to implement other things like seed-bombs and even a tank to prepare the field but we had some issues that stole our time... This is now not more than a basic concept... For the full-grown crops we planned adding some sparkling particles but this also fell off the table as less important task.
CornWars LD is aber 5% of the planned game and we implemented about 70-80% of what was planned to be in the LD-Release... We planned to also implement the tank and one kind of grenade.
The limit on 24 per type is intended to make it a bit harder. probably we should instead have limitied on 24 per slot instead per type...
@firesplash-entertainment
What coulf improve the "Tedious harvest" issue is to harvest the entire plot with one operation, rather than picking the individual stems. Like use the tile hitbox for harvesting as well (same way you use it for... shotgun-ing and seeding. And them make player to hold the button for a couple of seconds before the entirety of a tile gets harvested. This way even if you can only harvest one tile before you have to run off and sell, the progress of harvesting will be visible. Currently having three trips to the granary and the field not showing any progress was frustrating to the point of final straw... (pun intended)
@Hilvon Thanks for your opinion. I agree with you. I wil see if I can implement this for our end-of-week Post-LD Release :)
We will address this 100% for our complete game :)
Love the simplistic style, Good job! Please rate our game https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/ludums-kitchen
I saw this was a farming game and I was curious what you were going to combine it with, and a shooter was the last thing I expected LOL so well done with the theme.
I saw your blog post about streaming games, if you don't mind could you check ours out? We also did a farming game but we combined it with horror. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/happy-harvest
The concept is well executed but the whole experience feels very tedious, from only holding 24 of one item, the cooldown, and the effort needed to raise coin. It also seems to much like a regular farming sim with gun models instead of rake models. I'd suggest trying to increase the player reward system and making the harvesting run smoother. Could use turret guns to harvest corn efficiently or something. Harpoon gun retrieves crops. To me, it seems to lack any shooter-ness at all, not that it needs to be fast paced and extreme, just needs to feel more like you're using the guns to farm.
Oh I can run the game :\ it's not the first unity game I can't run. Not exactly sure why, but it gives me an error on all the possible settings I can try
"Switching to resolution 1280x800 failed, trying lower one All resolution switches have failed Screen: DX11 could not switch resolution (1280x800 fs=0 hz=0)"
I wish there are other things to shoot. If you switch out the gun for a hoe, you'd still be clicking on the tile to do farm work. So it being a gun is mechanically not that different if it was a hoe. But if that gun could do what the hoe couldn't, that would be more interesting.
Thanks for all your reviews :) Yes we planned to implement the shooting different but we were a bit too slow. Probably I will put that into our Post-LD update.
@Rombus Probably windowed mode would run for you? Else you could also try the WebGL which unfortunately has some bugs but could give you a brief idea about the game :)
Wow! I have not played your game yet but is looks very similar to my game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/farm-of-duty
Nice idea, cool graphics. It took me awhile to plant the seeds. Nice done overall ^^ Here's my game: https://ema1ih.itch.io/huber-driver
Neat idea. Would like to see it expanded on! Feel free to check my entry out here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/late-night-shopping
Very nice river (or may be spring) graphics!!! :)) I'd like it!
Hey there!
I am so sorry for not being able to play and rate your games yet... I got a cold... I will definitely play and rate them before time is over!
Nice idea! Having feedback for weapon cooldown and other player actions would have been nice, but the concept is there.
@MaikelOrtega Oh yeah you are right! We should have implemented a cooldown indicator...

Haha love the concept for this game. I tried to do a similar thing with mixing a farming sim with a FPS and we had CLEARLY different outcomes haha. I love how literal you take this combination (tilling the land with a shotgun, planting seed with a pistol, etc). This made me chuckle much. Well done! xD You guys got a LOT of stuff implemented! Great Job!
