Hi, nice game and congratulations ! did you make it with rpg maker ? Simple mechanics that still offered a decent amount of challenge. We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #36. We made the same thing at the previous jam.

Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description. (you can already find several games from the jam there)

Really cool looking game, seriously great work with the art and music. It took me a while to realise that the inventory in the house had a second page, maybe that could be communicated a little better. Also I thought I collected 4 of each item and filled the stash in a house. But nothing happened, so I let the time run out and it said I didn't survive the winter. Maybe I'm missing something, or maybe I needed to have the house stash and my own inventory fully stocked? Anyway some improvements can be made, but I was still pretty impressed with this game. Nice work.

Also forgot to mention that I loved the humour. Again nice work!

The game looks great and the music is quite good. I played through once and have several comments/suggestions:
-It would be nice to be able to skip or fast forward the opening narration/rules text, it felt like a long time waiting.
-The inventory menus look beautiful, but there was some weird behavior. For example, selecting a resource and clicking transfer would cause the first instance of that resource in the menu to transfer, not necessarily the one selected.
-Also, it doesn't seem like there was any button to bring up your inventory. This was pretty annoying.
-It would be nice to have a running count of the number of each resource you currently have. The game looks like it wants to be about exploration and survival, not memorization.
-Similarly, it would be nice to have a minimap, maybe only of the content that you've explored. I got lost for a while and couldn't find the house I was storing everything in.
-Maybe I'm just dumb, but I never realized that I was supposed to store everything in the house: I originally didn't see the arrows next to the house storage menu, so I thought that I was supposed to store 12 items in the house and 12 items in my inventory (and 6*4=24). I then lost the game as a result, only realizing afterwards what I should have done.
-The body temperature mechanic was very good, it did a great job of conveying the urgency of finding shelter.

I assume that you are already aware of a lot of the things I just said and didn't have time to implement them, because this looks very ambitious and you clearly know what you're doing. Overall, I liked it!

Great work! I loved the art and music. I can see myself playing it a lot once its polished! Great job!

volcanicgiraffe 2016-08-30 08:51

Hm, it seems I collected all the items x4 each (32 total) and nothing happened after this. Even inside the hut. (it was the hardest part - to find exactly your hut :D)

Very nice soundtrack, guys!

=== Graphics and animation ===
Nice and feels really good.

=== Gameplay ===
It gets boring after while, but I like it after in general

=== Sound ===
The foot steps are really nice and ambient sound is really great.

=== Controls ===
Nothing to complicated, but the message "You must be closer" is simply not visible at all.

But thank you for the 15 minutes I have played that.

bluellama 2016-08-30 08:58

really cool art style

garfeild 2016-08-30 09:26

Nice visuals and atmospheric music. But gameplay still requires polishing:
* Game starts with frustration – intro is not possible to skip and you should spend couple of minutes waiting when actual game starts
* Inventory is a big area for improvements – you can collect all, but it's not possible to drop/transfer all. I'm not talking about sorting or other stuff, but these actions are must have when you make game with inventory
* When you've collected everything (or you think so), you should sit and wait till timer runs out. It will be great to have "end turn" or "speed up" button.
Additional thoughts:
* Random generation could be great addition to the game
* Maybe add some encounter, e.g. wolves or something else, to make game dynamic.

Anyway, great entry and interesting basic game mechanics. Good job!

Overall a really good game with good graphics and sound.

zemmi 2016-08-30 22:14

Nice! Loved that walk cycle and snow goggles make everybody cool. Found a very exploitable bug though.

While the menu was open to transfer resources into my bag I was able to click the resource on the ground to refill it over and over until I selected exit and it disappeared. Because of this I could just fill up my bag to the max for every drop I found.

taro 2016-08-31 01:02

The presentation is really well-done. I like the graphics and music a lot. From a gameplay perspective, though, the game felt like another generic "collect X number of Y resource" MMORPG quests. Unfortunately, I don't find that to be nearly as fun. Would have liked to be able to skip the intro text, or at least control the speed in which they appear.

fundamental-phantom 2016-08-31 06:21

Graphics and music are very good!
I really like the semi-dorky walk animation (and it's a top-down 2.5 d game, so much work :O)
the tileset looks nice!

music very moody, makes the game feel cold and snowy, especially the 'wind', and the glassy percussion chimey stuff. The bass playing throughout really adds to the sense of ominousness

winter timer and body temperature UI are good, really add to the sense of urgency and are intuitive.

I like how you didn't give the player a mini map, so they have to explore and memorize the location of the huts. It really makes it more 'exploratory' and 'unknown' cause the player doesn't know where the things are (random), and they have to get a feel for the map

issues:
in a game where time is of the essence, add keyboard shortcuts for inventory management, as i spent too much time fumbling through the inventory

make the intro skippable using buttons, i was clicking everywhere trying to make it go when it was too long

the 'go inside/outside' buttons didn't really look like buttons to me, so i spent time clicking the house trying to go in. make it more clear it's clickable, or make clicking the house go in or use the up arrow key to quickly go into house

add inventory page numbers

overall:
needs a few more UI tweaks to make it more intuitive to the player, but
very moody/good looking game, good exploration gameplay with a sense of urgency!

We streamed your game last night on Twitch and for the most part, we enjoyed it even though we died a few times because 1/clicking on 'chest' opens the chest no matter how far you are works but clicking on 'go inside won't, so we lost precious seconds trying to get in. 2/ we lost the game! We gathered 4 of each resources in a single house, way before winter came, waited and waited (fast forward maybe?)... and lost because the resources weren't organised in 4 (at least that's our guess) and that was rather frustrating...

ocarson 2016-08-31 14:38

Feels like a lot of love has been put in to the game, congrats to all of you! I love the art and music. feels very atmospheric. I would echo the skippable text thing, and maybe have an option to "settle in" for winter, 20 minutes is a long time! Well done to all of you, you've done a great job.

brunurd 2016-08-31 17:41

fine art, sound and music, but I think the bar temperature falls too quickly

kapricornmedia 2016-08-31 19:59

Excellent sprites and moody music, it gives you the sense of danger. The presentation is slick and love how clean it all is.

mine10blox 2016-08-31 21:59

Wish I could have played, looks cool and nice art. Error message at start saying something about a folder not existing. Good luck anyways!

purplepanda 2016-08-31 23:08

I love the humour, love the art and the music. It's really really atmospheric!
But I collected all the items, and nothing happened. And I don't really want to wait around for another 18 days to pass to see if something does happen.

politewhale 2016-09-01 00:14

Hey! I gave a try to your game and I really loved how atmospheric it was. Everything from the sounds to the graphics really gave that impression of a cold winter which really helped to set the mood. The ticking timer on the corner and having to get into the houses to recover body temperature also gave this sense that something was coming. :D

I think the thing that should be improved the most is the UI. There were some elements that weren’t as intuitive as they could have been. One example I recall specifically is opening the chest of any of the houses. I was convinced I was inside the house every time I pressed “Chest” when I actually wasn’t and instead had to “Get Inside” and then “Chest”. Maybe make it so the chest opens automatically when you get inside (so you always get inside the hut) and when you exit it closes? At least personally for me I think it would make sense as an improvement. :P

I died in the end but I didn’t really understand why? I had a bunch of every item that seemed important. Maybe adding a little explanation of what the player could have done better would help give them a better direction of what they should focus on the next time they play the game. I have read some of the comments above and it seems like I was supposed to store everything in the chest, while I personally divided between both the chest and the inventory. Maybe that was what I did wrong.

Another small thing I noticed (maybe because the resolution I played in?) were little seams that would sometimes pop between the snow tiles. I actually had this happen in our project in the beginning and turns out making a new sprite material but with pixel snap turned on seems to mostly fix the issue and add an extra sharpness to everything that uses. But that’s just a tip really!

I’m looking forward to what you guys create next! :D

leaden 2016-09-01 21:51

I died multiple times before I got how to get into the hut. And I died in the final when my house was full of every collectible. Hard northern life.

jonathang 2016-09-03 10:30

Hey! Nice game.
Love the art and animation.
As stated before, the game-play dose get boring after a while and it feels a bit lonely with no other characters/moving objects in the scene.
Also stated before, could do with some resource counter in the house so I know how much I've gathered.

jupiter_hadley 2016-09-06 19:30

Very nice game! Lovely graphics. I included it in my compilation video series of Ludum Dare 36, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/lT_5Gj1NQIo

fragileannihilator 2016-09-09 23:19

Great art, music and jokes. The game is a bit too long, it's possible to collect the necessary amount of resources in way shorter period of time than it is given. So I filled my hut with stuff and waited until the end and.. nothing happened. I died.

kraiom 2016-09-20 00:35

Hi there. That's a really cool game!

Gameplay is nice, gorgeous art and the music adds a nice bit of tension! It made me think of Don't Starve a bit... Main challenge was not freezing, and orienting properly to find the same hut every time, but I found that time was much more than needed to complete the task. Writing is also really nice, and the touches of "Reincarnate / Rest with the elders" are awesome.

Things I missed: Some better management of items in the huts, I had to keep shifting between pages and checking what I was still lacking. And also the possibility to skip the intro text.

Very nice and cool game, thanks for it!
