LD38 — A Small World

Extraction by Criobite 2017-05-17T17:54:26Z

It's pretty short but I'm sure you're aware of that. The graphics are simple but effective, and the audio is well done, nice touch with the room transition sound effects. The puzzles seem a little too obvious, there's only one way to progress at each screen. Good job though, I'd be interested to see what you add if you choose to continue working on it.

For Eternity by holgk 2017-05-03T16:51:34Z

This video game is great, I'm such a sucker for city building games and Pharaoh and Children of the Nile are two of my all time favorites so I very much appreciated the theme of For Eternity.

I didn't run into any issues like some of the other commenters, the closest I got was a little bit of lag while placing roads in rapid succession but it cleared up instantly upon completing the road. I also somehow managed to get it to stop allowing me to zoom in/out but I was unable to reproduce it after a restart.

Other then those minor issues I really enjoyed the game. I'm inclined to agree with the others in saying that it needs an in-game tutorial, but given the time provided to make the game I understand how it wasn't a priority. On the other hand I also found that figuring out how to succeed was part of the fun for me. So instead of an in-depth tutorial maybe work on ways of showing the player the effects of their actions. For example, to see QoL and unemployed citizens you have to click on a house to open the house details window, this isn't obvious during the first playthrough so it was difficult to see exactly what my markets and cisterns were doing, perhaps put that information on the top bar where it is more accessible.

Very good video game, and I'd be interested to see if you take it further now that the jam is over. Well done!

As it's been mentioned, the cursor on the cube seems to be offset from where the mouse pointer is. I had troubles getting the explorer to go over the edge of the cube, if I went off the bottom edge he would disappear even if I rotated the cube down and yet I was still able to move him each turn. The art and sound effects are both well done, and the random events kept things somewhat interesting as time went on. I'm not really sure what the goal was, I just kept building farms and solar panels each turn, the explorer didn't really seem to have an effect on anything whether or not I moved it around. This is a really good start and I hope you continue to work on it, good job!

Commander's Log by smbe19 2017-05-03T18:14:09Z

Very good game, probably my favorite LD38 game so far! I crashed once with no error while speeding up time when an audio log came up, couldn't reproduce thought. * The building felt great, the graphics are simple but very good and portray the needed info like if something is disabled. * The audio logs are a very nice touch and add a lot to the mood of the game. * The resources seemed balanced and there wasn't too many that it was overwhelming.

My only complaint, if you can call it that, is that it would have been nice to be able to see your daily +/- for each resource. As it is, you kind of just have to guess or do the math on whether or not you're in the black. All the numbers on production/consumption are given to the player so I see no reason to not also provided stats for them as well.

Also I'm not sure if it was a bug or intended, but you can't disable the hydroponics even though in theory you could realistically stop watering your plants if you needed extra water to survive.

All in all, I really enjoyed playing Commander's Log, it was very difficult but I felt like that was appropriate and definitely added to my overall enjoyment of the game. Excellent work!

War in the Sky by ZYXer 2017-05-09T17:19:05Z

Art is great, and UI felt really polished. But I'm disappointed there wasn't any audio, I would have loved to listen to the airships putt around. Also, maybe I missed something, but I'm not sure it really counts as an idle game since nothing happens without your input. Maybe increase the costs of things and/or add upkeep costs, but add the ability to set airships to auto produce a resource. All in all, I enjoyed it though so good job!

Asteroid Architect by Erik Larsson 2017-05-17T17:37:20Z

Excellent game, the art and music were both really good. It has a simple enough mechanic and yet a lot of depth with how each building type interacts with each other. Really impressive what you were able to accomplish in the 72 hours provided. Good job!

I couldn't get past the QWAS section due to my keyboard not allowing more than 3 key presses at once. Consider gamepad support perhaps? Other than that I thought it was very enjoyable.

The Deep by GertJohnny 2017-05-09T16:43:46Z

Fantastic! Graphics and audio are superb, simple but very atmospheric. I really enjoyed interacting with the machines, it felt sort of like The Oil Blue.

Acquaintances by RodrigoNietiedt 2017-05-17T18:05:29Z

A really good take on the theme! The music is enjoyable, and all the different voices and responses from the people is really well done. My only suggestion is, instead of a grid of people it might have been more interesting if they were all kind of milling about or standing in small groups. As it is, it's easy to just go row by row looking for your friend. Good job on the game!

Mad Gods by Norseware team 2017-05-17T17:45:46Z

The art, music, and sound effects are excellent. It felt a little sadistic creating a big population just so that I could rain acid and kill most of them off for points. The calm music really juxtaposed the chaos going on on screen. Good job!

MiniRacer by AyyAmThe1 2017-05-17T16:52:25Z

The toy cars fits the theme well I thought. It's kind of fun to play around with but it didn't seem like there were any consequences to crashing, the only difficulty came from hitting the ramps and then landing on your side unable to continue and thus being force to restart. Not sure if it's a bug or not, but the coins don't reset when you press restart, you only ever have to collect a coin once. I liked the graphics a lot, and the music was fun, unfortunately the physics kind of ruined it for me. Good work none the less, you accomplished a lot in the short amount of time provided.

That Tiny Pea by Thendash 2017-05-17T16:03:35Z

@zyxer @feips If I learned anything this LD, it's that I need to tone down the difficult a lot. The first version I sent to my friends for testing had less fuel, so for the final version I added what I thought was a generous amount. Guess I wasn't generous enough!

Terraformit by SwampHen 2017-05-17T18:26:57Z

I'm really bad, I think every time I died was due to my own shots. The art and sound effects are really well done and it was a fun way to kill a lunch break. My only issue is that it is unclear how many hits the planet can take and it's easy to miss the game over screen from shooting constantly. Good work!

Masked by fpwong 2017-05-17T17:15:52Z

Really fun game! The graphics, especially the animations and old school textures, are fantastic and really help to set the mood. Spacebar did something, a charge mechanics or something? But I couldn't actually tell what it did other than heat up my weapons a little. The fog of war seemed a little too close for my like at the start, but as I got into it I think it might be perfect. Any further out and it might have been too easy to dodge incoming attacks and just snipe the enemies from afar. I would be very interested if you added procedural level generation, some pickups like limited use weapons, and maybe level bosses. Good work, I hope you keep working on it!
