LD42 — Running out of space

Its Time To Stop Running by tinykidtoo 2018-08-14T20:51:56Z

Plot is pretty funny, I do always like a good throwaway story for LD games. The shooting is quite satisfying, though it's a bit weird only having 2 shots in the gun before it reloads.

It took me a while to figure out the tables in the top room gave me more ammo, but it usually ended up not giving me enough to deal with the onslaught of leeches. It probably would have helped a little to have a minimap of the ship, to make it clearer how it's structured.

Was satisfying to complete! The completion message showed for about half a second on my screen though - might be an issue with my refresh rate messing with a timer. (144hz)

I won, apparently. I'm not sure how I just randomly assigned caretakers.

This was a really solid game. Was a bit annoying acccidentally dropping things out of range, but I managed it in the end. I think in the winning run I managed to place the sphere inside the cylinder, then they both launched into orbit and I didn't get penalized. Maybe it was that impressive. ;)

I understand the confusion with picking things up before pressing them, but that was really the only issue, and it was temporary. Good work!

Dragon Horde: Revenge of the Wizard King by MattWoelk 2018-09-04T13:17:06Z

Cool! Cute graphics, plays pretty well. Love your "lore" as well. Could have used some audio, but everything else was pretty solid.

Very good game - pretty complex for the time given! The normal difficulty was quite reasonable - it looked harder than it was, but I still died outright the first time since I hadn't figured out the building mechanics. I had some trouble telling the different turrets apart after placement... perhaps different colours might have helped here.

I liked the artstyle - the distortion outside the dome is really cool, but I'm conflicted on the explosions. I absolutely love the animation and look, however they ended up blocking my vision completely when I was near the enemy I destroyed, since the particles were opaque cubes.

Could have done with some audio - even just sound effects. More to have feedback on if you hit an enemy or not, more than anything else.

I did enjoy my playthrough - and I'm really impressed at what you've made here. My dome got so big that I could jump out of the map - got a nice pic of everything from under the ground. :camera: mappa.png

Void Knight vs PEST by Memel06 2018-09-04T16:50:47Z

Very impressive for the 48h compo. I like the weapon mechanic and its trail, though I may have developed a repetitive strain injury. The ambient music was very well made, sfx great, art wasn't brilliant but it worked.

I think it ended up a bit easy, but that's more a personal preference thing. The difficulty curve was good - just not enough levels to go bananas by the end.

Well done!

Incredibly impressive. Loved the music, character design, pixel art and gameplay. Difficulty was perfect, even though there weren't too many levels. Only problem was the huge delay before you can walljump, but that's probably since I'm used to playing platformers where you can do that immediately.

Best game I've seen so far, honestly.

One more thing! The game ran more than 2x too fast on my system because my monitor refresh rate is 144hz. Wasn’t too much of an issue because I just switched PC, but worth mentioning.

Amazing job with the music, ez max score on that category. Solid game on all other fronts, major props for using your own engine. The gameplay was pretty simple, though I like that the boss had more attack patterns. Might have been more interesting if the tiles could take more hits, but the boss fired on them quicker (or simultaneously). Nice work!

Out of Space by metamorphling 2018-08-23T14:51:12Z

I'm running into the same thing as everyone else really - the game is trivialized by staying in place and then moving a little bit when you return back to the start. I liked the design you put in the description though, pickups that incentivize movement would have definitely brought out the difficulty.

Slightly 2 Overbuilt by JammedGame 2018-09-04T17:47:13Z

Fantastic concept. It's rare to see an LD game use the theme this effectively. I love well thought out, difficult puzzle games - I only won by a hair. Graphics aren't complicated but they don't need to be - the look fits perfectly. Could have used some music, but it was arguably more tense without.

Was a bit confusing getting started but after the first few buildings it all made sense.

Great work!

A Crazy Shelf by Prosider 2018-09-04T12:47:34Z

Solid effort for a first time entry. Simple but good execution of the theme. Only trouble was that there wasn't a lose screen - so to keep track of my best score I had to keep an eye on it during gameplay since it wipes as soon as you fail. I think my best attempt was over 150. Things also tended to spawn in identical locations and launch into orbit, and there doesn't seem to be any penalty for letting objects pile up or fall off.

I had more fun than I was expecting. :mouse_three_button:

The movement style is absolutely hilarious, the sound effects are perfect and I love it. Unfortunately that meant the hardest thing to do in the game was get through doors... but I was able to slam into a caterpillar hard enough to send it out of the level, so it was all worth it.

Music and sound effects are on point - art is pretty simple but you can't do anything but love that caterpillar. :bug: :ok:

Please No Home by Emanuele 2018-08-16T12:54:12Z

I like how you get totally owned after 15 seconds.

Closing Arena by Neu_Eric 2018-08-15T23:08:47Z

The game goes way too fast for me. I'm playing with a 144 hz monitor, so it's running more than 2x as fast as it should be. I'm impressed with the path finding though - rather well put together apart from the framerate issue.

How to please a Dragon by Kruemelkatze 2018-09-04T17:27:38Z

Really nice graphics, splendid work. The story and music are pretty great too.

I don't think I was offered enough chance cards - by the end I think I was shovelling gold into a full container for 2 minutes and it wasn't offering me anything. Perhaps making them pseudorandom or fixed might keep things more balanced.

That all said, I love polished games - it's clear you put a lot of care into this.

Running Out Of Space, In Space! by Fireyoyo 2018-08-14T20:29:19Z

Great game, very good first entry! Good use of the theme, it definitely makes the gameplay stand out from a regular top down shooter. My only complaints are that the game doesn't have much structure - it doesn't get noticeably harder, and it could do with some kind of wave system to break it up a little. Got to 6:41 with 1546 points before my stamina ran out. Cool that it's a little hard to shoot the homing missiles, adds some challenge getting rid of them so you can focus on the other stuff.

I liked the graphics preset - though your pretty starfield background kind of contradicted it. Really good music too, fits the mood.

(The exit button doesn't seem to work at the end either, but that's not too important. I can just play forever ;) )

@sentmoraap I've added arrow keys as an alternative to WASD to the post compo build. I did think about this being an issue, but I ended up forgetting about it in the end. Glad you enjoyed it!
