LD38 — A Small World

UFO in a box of bricks by maartene 2017-05-09T11:57:30Z

I like the idea, that you can't shoot the enemies directly. A small but fresh detail. All in all it looks good, runs perfectly smooth on my old laptop, the sound ist right on point - the music is groovy and the input works out if you use mouse instead of keyboard for weapon change :D

So well ... 24h? ... i'm diggin it :D

The Adventurer Davidson by Hlavik 2017-05-06T13:54:34Z

Cool concept ... Some colliders feel a bit too sensitive and the whole game starts to lag after a few rooms. Other than that it's fun to play and there is some cool music too. After a few minutes it feels repetitive because there are only 4 rooms or something like that.

Anyways ... keep it up.

I Just Wanted Groceries by Jedeen 2017-05-09T11:48:02Z

Cool ... actually i remember creating a game with a similar theme before (you had to manage your shop but must avoid customers). Plays somehow along the lines of pacman ... and yeah, the difficulty depends entirely on the rng :D. without that however it would've been much too easy in the jam scope so i don't mind it being random.

Fun game!

Luggage Robber by bemmu 2017-05-05T14:43:27Z

Bloody ... yay.

More games should include the feature of kicking random people which then turn to a red splatter effect. The game itself is simple but not easy to beat. The time limit itself wouldn't be that much of a problem but all these people blocking your path are annoying.

To beat your path through them you have to stand exactly on the same height (or whatever the rule of hitting is here) else they will just block you off but you can't hit them. A bit annoying but if it would be easier, the whole game would be extremely easy to beat.

In conclusion ... fun to play for a while but after playing it once i think you have seen everything to be seen.

Starstruck Ducky by HuvaaKoodia 2017-05-09T12:09:49Z

It's ducks ... and they're talking to each other. What else do you need for a fun game?

I liked meeting the different characters. The outcome seems to be a bit of random but not too hard since you just need to keep you relationship up and see that you don't miss any parties :D

And what i really like, that this game is somehow different and not just the basic shmup, tower defense or whatever jam approach ... so bonus points for creativity.

Mallows World Adventure by geeitsomelaldy 2017-05-07T10:21:43Z

The platforming part works out really well and music is cool. The only thing which confused me at a later part was the inventory management. The avocado guy has never seen an avocado? ... well lets show him my avocado. Nope ... doesn't seems interested.

I had to drop the other things first (and he seems to drop random things :D, ... maybe not random, just not controllable).

After solving it, he just gives me a brown something? :D ... luckily there weren't that much guys around which had any problems. And after delivering the "hat/sombrero" i got another "i don't know" ... and i still don't know, but it helps me finishing the game.

So yeah ... it's a compo entry so i don't want to be that harsh that the inventory was confusing. Other than that the game worked out pretty well.

Sweet End by Samuli 2017-05-06T17:26:59Z

Looks really nice ...

Since i played solo i can't say whether it manages to come up with some competitive feeling but it was nice to eat up tons of sweets without having to worry too much :D

Music creates a happy eat up everything feeling ... but i wouldn't want to listen to it for too long :D. But one since the game is time limited this doesn't actually hurt too much.

So yeah ... nice entry ...

Greedy Nations by Squatch 2017-05-03T18:55:35Z

Mmh ... i didn't know what to do the whole time :D ... I somehow spent my resources. Later the food counter stopped and froze for 2 Minutes, after which it started to increase again. Some time later the bot (well i guess it was the bot as i lost to him) conquered all the cities.

Still i'm puzzled on how to play the game exactly to win ... or to achieve something in general :D

The concept of pausing the game while still being able to issue commands is nice though. Creates a feeling of an oldschool strategy game.

Fast & Faeries by andyman404 2017-05-07T09:57:59Z

Great Entry!

First of all it looks really nice. The music is well selected and everythings leaves a good impression.

I have some minor problems with the controls though. I want to have a greater influence on my racing character in racing games :D. The faeries just feel like tanks currently. Also it's somehow better to just ignore the yellow path because it just goes through wild curves through trees. Just pacing forward (and i guess not crossing the red borders ... didn't try it) yields better results.

Pretty hard game ... but cool :D

Planetary Defense by pixlark 2017-05-05T07:53:31Z

Phew ... pretty hard game here. I think i like the idea that you only have 2 towers and have to reallocate your resources to defend the big planet. It might be nice to know where to rotate next ... like an indicator to the next enemy, since the planet is kind of large :D ... don't make it smaller (as it would get way easier), but just tell me where something is.

Sound works out okay, nice retro vibe. All in all ... a compo success ... you rock!!! :D

What Remains. by Fiote 2017-05-05T07:26:09Z

Cool ... played it for about half an hour now and now i want more structures to build :D. Very playable indeed and there seems to be some kind of balancing which keeps you in check for ... well about half an hour. Theres always something missing. And if you have everything working, another person steps in through the door and eats up all your resources.

At first the instructions where overwhelming and i was scared to understand the whole system, but after all it wasn't that hard to grasp. Actually everyone told me what was needed for now and the buildings had a description what they produce.

Of course with a little more time there would have been some ideas to improve the controls, but it didn't hurt me that much. And we all know it's a jam.

Cool entry ... implement more structures and some kind of goal or whatever and i would actually play it outside of a jam.

Meteor Jam by PeachTreeOath 2017-05-07T10:57:47Z

Fun and well made game.

Every level has it's own cool music. The platforming feels right. Details like moving clouds in the background. Cool sprite art.

It might get repetitive after a few planets. But it has a well made grinding system and it's better to have a small well thought game system which actually works than some big vision which isn't playable at all.

So ... i had fun for a playthrough. I like collecting and investing stuff in abilities :D

And yeah ... the last planet would be kind of rage-something if you wouldn't keep your progress after death. I mean i could imaging beating it but the amount of asteroids and their speed just feels kind of too much ... and you can't see them in time to really do something about it ... even with the radar.

Perhaps with some patience, but since i keep everything after dying ... why bother :D

Lonely Moon by manou 2017-05-07T11:57:12Z

Mkay ... so you need all of the rocks to lift off :D ... Perhaps some message on the whatever machine this is would have been nice. "more energy required" or whatever.

Really stressful ... and you need some power to run this, else it's just painful to control.

But it looks nice, the atmosphere is great. Controls are a bit WTF :D. Why use ESDF instead of WASD? Every time i started it i had to make sure my left hand is positioned right. But it works out ... just confusing at the start.

Oh yeah ... even when it runs smooth, the physics could be better. I never had that much problems running through a door. And all that with a time limit :D

But as it's a compo entry i don't mind most of the problems i mention here ...

Kryp by Nahkala 2017-05-09T12:32:54Z

This is why i love jams ... in a normal game creation setting this would have never been created because no one would buy it and no one is able to tell why he would be interested in this.

But it is great playing it ... first i was confused why the game went out of fullscreen and then i collected the first ... uhm ... seeds? :D ...

The detail of the world is amazing too. All these little bugs doing ... nothing exactly but they are there and support the atmosphere.

Once again ... great entry ... it was fun playing it.

To The Stars by Evil Brain 2017-05-06T17:17:20Z

Works out pretty well. Stack a tower up to the sky and don't fall down. The controls are a little bit clunky and later i got softlocked ... oh and the sound stopped :D But i had fun playing and thats the main point i guess.

Escape from Sytlanta by Gundatsch 2017-05-03T14:39:07Z

@fiote, Thanks for playing :D

I probably have to explain the goal better ingame (how to achieve it). But honestly after not being able to start the jam right away i was pretty happy that the game is beatable without any major glitches so far :D

Once again, thanks for sharing your experience.

Escape from Sytlanta by Gundatsch 2017-05-05T06:31:08Z

@pixlark well ... actually i have this discussion with a team member :D He tells me that the game is too hard (on easy) every day and i'm unable to understand why :D. But since everyone seems to have issues with the difficulty and what to do exactly, i may have to work on that.

There are 2 other difficulty levels after all and no one except me seems to be able to beat easy without issues ... oh well.

But thanks for playing of course.

Escape from Sytlanta by Gundatsch 2017-05-06T09:21:20Z

@andyman404 Oh, you're right ... the WebGL version was updated and itch.io always links to specific versions. Fixed now.

Escape from Sytlanta by Gundatsch 2017-05-06T23:37:04Z

@geeitsomelaldy uuh ... i can only guess that you had 4 different gems on you when trying to unlock a ruins field? You need 4 gems of the same type and then you can unlock the ruins of this gem type (and only this one). It would be of some interest to me if you have played the ldjam version (which suffered from major lack of feedback due to time) or the current one (which tries to give hints with tooltips and icons with the needed gem types). Now i'm still thinking about giving the player some hint that he needs to explore the island but currently am unable to find a good idea how to present it without overloading the ui.

@kcreanor well in the latest version (which i uploaded just yet) the characters have special abilities which make it a bit easier to solve the game. I tested it to be solvable on hard (well i don't beat it every time, it's hard for a reason after all). My team members are sure to tell me every day to make it easier though :D ... if there are still a lot of opinions that easy is too hard in the current version i will consider making the island smaller for easy and normal ... but i need more feedback here as i'm unable to lose on easy :P

Escape from Sytlanta by Gundatsch 2017-05-07T17:49:34Z

@maartene uuh no ... it shouldn't be black. Looks like some Safari does something wrong there. I can build a mac version which usually works out fine (just can't test it, as i have no mac, but friends usually report no bugs).

Keep in mind though, that you shouldn't rate any version other than the Ludum Dare version (which is windows), because everything else contains post jam updates (which wouldn't be fair to rate). So if you can't test the original version, just enjoy the current version but don't give ratings based on the polished version.

Escape from Sytlanta by Gundatsch 2017-05-07T18:21:20Z

@maartene okay, i uploaded a mac build but totally can't say if it works (due to lack of mac) ... but chances are it will show more than a black screen :D

@huvaakoodia well ... the checkmark does show, but it sinks with the island :D. If you look carefully though you can sometimes make it out shimmering through the water. I agree though that there should be a better way of presenting it so that it is always clearly visible. I'm not sure how though. Just letting it float in air just feels wrong.

And i agree that the whole game would be much cooler if there would be a smaller map but in turn more actions which gave a more strategic depth. But jam :D ... and i guess this game will get lost in the depths of the internet anyways.

Once again, thanks for playing ...

Escape from Sytlanta by Gundatsch 2017-05-09T09:26:13Z

@blaster391 ... ah well ... i understand ... we need a more detailed help screen :D

@Nahkala NP ... that's what the jam is for (i think) :D

@maartene i always like positive feedback. Gives me the impression, that we did something right. Actually the post-jam build is available on android (perhaps the link on itch.io is a bit small). Other than that ... thanks for visiting again :D

Escape from Sytlanta by Gundatsch 2017-05-11T09:16:33Z

@Flaterectomy mmh ... a fog of war or something like that might be a nice idea. Automatically solves some of the issues (like pilot getting to all places of the island right at the start). But this would need some island resizing and i guess i shouldn't do it on easy as there where several voices that easy was way to hard before.

And a tutorial is a nice idea too ... some small predefined level where you get told all of the movements and goals and whatever.

@kasarun yeah, the sunken checkmarks is still an issue i'm thinking about. The action arc was faster before, but some testers had issues with it because when it shows faster und you are kind of a noob in clicking or touching the tiles the arc would show and execute move instead of executing the default action (what the player wanted).

@pixelstuff another interesting idea. This would need some small work on the level generator, but certainly is possible. At least for the diver and pilot (currently i can't think of a situation where it is absolutely needed to dig all the tiles around you for winning. it just makes some situations easier).

But there are some setups imaginable which would convert this to a puzzle game ... predefined levels where it is predefined which tiles sink when and where the optimum movements are setup. Would need some tight level planning but perhaps an interesting game mode.

Thanks to everyone again for playing, there are some nice insights to gain here ...

Escape from Sytlanta by Gundatsch 2017-05-18T11:48:22Z

@dejvo tell that to the people who think it is way to hard :D. If you don't play easy in one of the post-jam versions it should be possible to lose, but due to some balancing changes hard in v0.8 got a bit to easy again. Anyways, there are several changes in line which came up through the comments. I just need some time to spend :D

Oh and thanks for playing ... i'm really grateful for a voice which actually has the opinion that the game is easy :D

The Deific's Guide to Creating, Exploiting, and Destroying Pocket Worlds by Smiling Cat Entertainment 2017-05-07T00:22:22Z

I think most of the things have been said already. The concept is cool but most of the time i'm just waiting (and i don't event know why). Then i collect things for 15 seconds or so again and then i'm waiting again. I couldn't figure out what to do other than that :D.

I would like to collect all the time ... i mean it just doesn't feel right that you see the stuff and your character just collects it in a small time frame.

I pay my respects for doing all that in compo time though ... i know how hard it is to get anything done in that time :D

Number of The Beast by Awerick 2017-05-04T09:14:24Z

A bit hard to grasp what to do here (i mean what to do to win). It might need a few runs until you can play the game effectively. You might not want to start with normal if you don't understand the game :D

In the first try i built a few structures until i had no money. The beast ate something and for a few rounds nothing happened anymore. It's not very clear how the system works exactly (thus how to work with it to win somehow).

But what can you do ... it's a jam after all and it was refreshing to play some ASCII game for a change. And while you opted out of the graphic rating it looked cool somehow after all.

Every Man's Sky by blaster391 2017-05-09T12:19:44Z

Simplicity is king :D

My impression is, that this is like a new type of messenger ... everyone is creating something with some deep message hidden in there. And you have a huge universe of absolute knowledge ... uuh ... exactly :D

Runs great ... perhaps some ambient soundtrack would be nice to create that space feeling ... Other than that, i can't tell why, but it's amazing ...

Atomic Candies by Archael_Mestre 2017-05-06T17:41:40Z

Well ... the physics are weird. Sometimes the capsule just goes left or right or doesn't fall or whatever.

By playing you can see however that there is some cool simple puzzle idea behind this crossed with an interesting camera setting.

Also the music is quite relaxing ... so ... well, don't give up ... keep learning Unity and i guess your ideas will work out fine.

Clean Up in Aisle 3 by martiangames 2017-05-05T14:26:06Z

Well ... it crashed on my laptop (perhaps mobile nvidia chips are not cool :D) but on my big machine it was playable.

Looks cool, you can almost guess that it could be a fun game if there was anything to achieve. I was collecting "wetness" for a few minutes and then slugged out of the door and was exploring the plane outside. Other than that sadly there isn't much to do. But the slug looks great and everything feels organic which is cool.

FUEL by KCreanor 2017-05-07T10:30:13Z

Fun and challenging ... and even harder when played with a touchpad :D

Solid work indeed for a compo entry. Everything feels like a game and theres nothing missing which would be obvious. Seems like you knew what you were doing.

Into The Light by r3volutionary 2017-05-03T18:40:06Z

The idea is cool. Simple but effective. Sadly there is not much to do here except walking long paths. And if you don't walk the right path you even can get stuck later on. So clearly a lot of unfinished stuff here.

But you get the idea of the targeted goal by playing it, which is kinda cool.
