LD33 — You are the Monster

Unsolicited by dukope 2015-08-24T03:28:00

This is a solid game! Very polished for a Ludum Dare product. The only technical flaw I found was that sometimes the selection menus would overflow above the game window, so I couldn't pick the very top ones.

I can't give this one a huge theme score because I don't think sending out junk mail is too monstrous. Annoying, yes, but monstrous is a bit of a stretch... If I could see the negative effects of the mail, I'd bump the score a bit higher (angry "STOP SENDING ME JUNK MAIL" letters before each day, maybe? The pile gets bigger depending on how well you do?).

No complaints about anything else, though!

Monster Pizza by dalbinblue 2015-08-24T07:01:00

$4260!

With that out of the way.

This game was a lot of fun, and the whole presentation was really sharp. On my first playthrough, I didn't know why there were so many pizza icons (I assumed I would be picking up pizza from a particular pizzeria instead of just from any pizzeria), so I failed spectacularly. Once I figured it out, though, it was a lot of fun... Kinda like Crazy Taxi, but you can finally run over that pesky traffic if you want to!

As has previously been said, the delivery areas tend to blend in to their surroundings. That's the only big complaint I can think to bring up, though. This game is fun!

Ghost Life by karlinfox 2015-08-24T03:52:00

Labeling the counters would help a lot. I guess the gray one was time and the other one was some sort of score?

It was hard to figure out if there was going to be anything new after the orange dots appeared. After hanging around for a minute or two, I quit.

This has potential, but right now it just looks nice. Which, granted, is important. I'd like to see it more fleshed-out.

Late for the Show by Gamepopper 2015-08-24T21:50:00

I accidentally skipped the intro because I thought Space would advance the dialog box ahead a little bit instead of skipping the whole thing!

It's a fun, fast little idea, though if you just jam the buttons when you reach the areas, it's pretty easy. The music is cool, though, and the graphics remind me of an old Game Boy game (in a good way!).

The Wrath of Gandhi by greysphere 2015-08-24T07:42:00

Other than the slow endgame (maybe make it so research can be converted into other resources? I banked hardcore on those schools, yo), this is a solid game. Creative take on the theme, and it works as a full-fledged game. I'd like to see a way to lose (A time limit, maybe? That would make it more exciting!), but this is a good one.

Adolf no Baito! by PixelPerfect 2015-08-24T21:16:00

The game crashed for me when I chose to paint and after the second successful planning stage, which makes it hard for me to appreciate this game fully. (I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, if that helps.)

I think the planning game is an interesting idea, but it would make more sense if you limited the keys to either the left side or the right side of the keyboard, since it's hard for me to cover the whole keyboard and move my cursor on my trackpad.

The white text on the pink background is hard to read; maybe use a shadow effect on the text to give it a distinguishing border?

As a game in its present state, it's not very fun, but it's a unique idea and it has potential.

Oranges In Love With My Fly by ViliX64 2015-08-24T06:12:00

I tried the final level a few times before giving up and watching the last part on the YouTube video. Solid game, but I don't think the gameplay matches well with the story. The story is deliberate and well-paced, while the gameplay (in my experience) devolved into spamming a set rotation of enemies and hoping it would eventually pay off.

One writing critique: The phrase "Isn't it absurd to die for what you've until recently lived for?" is difficult to parse; I'd break it up into two sentences. "You've lived for this until recently. Isn't it absurd to die for it?"

Generally, the art is excellent and the mood is on the right side of surreal without being too much. I dig it!

$!*# by Andrey 2015-08-24T06:26:00

It's an OK word search game, but I don't think it fits the theme. Having non-uniform font height made it obnoxious to scan through the columns, since my eyes had to keep shifting up and down along with left to right.

Razed by kewleus 2015-08-24T04:46:00

Great game! Simple, but polished. My only complaint - with all of these planets, where are the stars they're orbiting? Could be a fun element to add in the future - If you hit them, you're toast!

Loch Ness by filiph 2015-08-24T06:20:00

I like the idea, but I think it needs more fleshing out. It was hard to keep track of where I had hatchlings, and how many were in each group.

Also, does the scoring system work? Or am I just terrible at this? (Maybe I don't want to know the answer.)

Eye of the Basilisk by dkdwrek 2015-08-24T03:40:00

There's a solid game idea here, and the graphics and sound definitely fit, but it's too easy right now. I got bored after 2 minutes because there wasn't any challenge. I wish I would've wanted to play longer!

Perfect.

Attack Of The 50ft Snail by lorcanwsmith 2015-08-24T04:40:00

First, this game took me a LONG time to download to play on Kongregate. Might just be my connection, but if you can trim any file size, that would help a lot.

Considering it was made in 48 hours, this is solid, but there are some things to work on. You asked for feedback, so here goes:

The view makes it hard to see what I'm hitting, especially villagers. Zooming out to be over the "shoulder" of the snail instead of on top of it would help me see what I'm hitting when I attack.

Speaking of, it was hard to tell when I hit a building/lamp post, since there was no indication from the object in question if it had taken damage unless it was destroyed. A little shake or flash when I hit to show damage would be helpful!

All in all, this is a solid Ludum game! After all, who wouldn't want to be a giant snail crushing a small town?

Disastris by TerraCottaFrog 2015-08-24T05:06:00

This feels really polished! The variety of the disasters is great, though I wish there were a little explanation of which each one is at the very beginning. Maybe a level select/restart level functionality to make it easier to experiment?

And I wish the monster had more than one frame of animation to make its movement a bit more interesting. Even a two-frame with it moving its claws up and down would help.

All in all, though, this is great!

The Devourer by bwafflecone 2015-08-24T06:48:00

This game looks really good for LD! It's a bit hard to control, especially trying to get to the fruit. Overall, though, this is a good, lighthearted take on the theme.

Werewolf Quest by Yrr 2015-08-24T22:11:00

This is surprisingly polished and a lot of fun! It looks a bit blurry on my machine too (Windows 7 64-bit), but it's not too bad. Sometimes I got a bit confused about which way to go (I think after I hit the first red switch? Or maybe the blue one?), but generally, this game was really solid! (I do feel kinda bad for killing all those undead folks, though...)

Monster Olympics by lemer 2015-08-24T22:18:00

On the second one, I would've liked to know I was going to have to hold the Spacebar before I reached that point, but otherwise, this is a fun minigame collection. Good job!

St. George's Academy for Monster-Slaying Lasses by AlariSilver 2015-08-24T21:44:00

In general, this is a solid entry. Lots of good stuff happening, especially including hand-drawn characters in an LD game.

I wish there were a few choices I could make to change up the combat aspect; maybe I could find a better sword or armor and have to choose between them? As it is, the combat seems kinda arbitrary.

I'd love to see this expanded with a bit more polish and a lot more content. Good job!

TIGIY (There is Good In You) by Elenesski 2015-08-24T07:51:00

Solid game! The intro screen has a LOT of text to digest, which is overwhelming at first, but the game is fun once you get into it. Good job!

Be Happy!! by monetai 2015-08-24T06:35:00

This hits the theme perfectly in my book, but the gameplay is a bit lacking. As has already been mentioned, the fact that it takes almost as long to get through the tutorial as it does to play the game is disappointing.

Aside from that, though, this is a solid entry. I wish I got a different message when I scored 0, though... "What are you doing!? You didn't hug any of the animals!!" Something like that. :)

How cookies ruined my life. by Suese 2015-08-24T05:23:00

This is great, especially the animation. Three complaints, though:

1. It's hard to tell if there's going to be an ending if I survive long enough or not. A word about that in the description or an in-game "I don't think this is ever going to end!" would be helpful.

2. I killed the last person in a group the same time they killed me, and the game didn't know quite what to do.

3. When the person comes in after the first murder, they knock first. Who knocks on the door of a public bathroom!? (I'm being nit-picky, but it took me out of the moment.)
