LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

RTHM by fashionbatman 2018-04-24T05:01:48Z

What a cute game!!! It's the first rhythm game where I really enjoyed the music. Great choice to go with chiptunes and pixel graphics!

It took me FOREVER to finally get someone to go on a date with me! I wish there was some kind of feedback on which emoji I should be choosing. I couldn't figure out if each person liked a certain one or if it was a 25% chance each time to get one they liked and I just had the worst luck ever.

Super cute and very fun! Great job!

Stop The Munchies by Sarah 2018-04-24T03:21:11Z

What a cute game! I had the same issues as @Dekobii and couldn't see the next piece if I played fullscreen. If I played within the browser, I couldn't read any of the text so I had no idea which way my tower was going to shoot. :( The sound is also very cute (and fits the setting well!) but it did loop, so I made sure to refresh inbetween each play.

I think you combined the genres well, though! It was never a doubt in my mind that it was a card-based tower defense game, which is really awesome, considering how tough this theme was!

And the donuts and pies! So so so cute! I'd pay for stationary in this theme. :) Great entry!

Roundabout: ~ Roguelike & Rythm ~ Trading Bard Game by Gustavo Manchae 2018-04-28T02:09:14Z

There's not much I can say that hasn't already been said: great idea with great execution for a jam game! I also wish there was music, but I realize how tough that would be to make it sound good with the game.

I really appreciated the fact that each character had unique sound clips for each attach and made it a fun meta game--try to chain cards together in interesting ways to make a mini song! Once you get a solo though, it's all over. You start to only want to get those! I think a band combo would be really cool--if each person gets a spot in the song, they all jump together and play simultaneously.

Great job!

Check, Please! by swav_gav 2018-04-24T02:53:22Z

Very charming! The difficult controls fit in perfectly and contributed to the fun of the game. I love that the UI was minimal--pay attention to your date! The first playthrough, I couldn't get the wine task to clear. Her glass was full... so I filled it more... and then it overflowed. The subsequent playthroughs were just fine though!

I also liked how there were multiple possibilities. The first time I played, I just tried to feed her the meatballs with my hands... like a savage. Sorry! The second time, I picked up the fork and fed her that way. Loved that!

Great entry!

Super Slime Slasher Ultra by sebastianscaini 2018-04-24T05:38:16Z

When I first started the game, my boyfriend commented over my shoulder: "Are you still playing game jam games?" Your game looks THAT good! The art is so good! Also, the voiceovers during the battles really take it to another level of polish.

I do wish there were more colors or more mechanics to play with. I only played a few games and got a bit bored after the initial rush of fun. 72 hours is not a whole lot of time to add those kinds of things though and you guys did a great job of polishing what you had and making a great packaged game! Well done!

This is a slick game for a one man show! The music was a little quiet so I had to turn up my speakers, but once I did, that's where the real atmosphere started. I love that it's randomly generated, so each playthrough is different!

I think a missed opportunity might've been the health counter though. I think a cool effect would've been a dark vignette around the screen that gets darker with each hit. I was really impressed with the death animation, so I guess I wish I saw more of it in the game. 72 hours is a short time, though!

Nice job!

Beat Street by solluxx 2018-04-24T04:11:29Z

I can't believe you made a game with this many mechanics in such a short period of time!!! Our game had WAY too many mechanics in our original design and we ended up not being able to implement a lot of them, so it's awesome that you guys made it work.

I really enjoyed this game! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the meta of placing buildings in easy to remember patterns. It definitely changes the quality of your town that you create. My first go around was met with an awful lot of fires. Once I got it down... it was very prosperous!

I guess my only wish was that the game would "help" your music somehow. I have no idea how you'd do that, but my "music" at the end was... not great. Of my own accord of course! But I wish there was a handicap for that. :)

Great job! Super impressed!

Haiti Kitty by Beebo Studios 2018-04-28T02:26:37Z

Really cute mash-up of ideas! I love the pixel cats!!! Especially the fishing one after you land a fish. :)

It's so hard to remember to add the controls to the game in a jam! During playtesting, you already know how to play so it doesn't even occur to you until the last moment. I totally feel you there!

I was a little disappointed that I wasn't treated to a cute animation of all three cats enjoying their fish, a la Monster Hunter. Mostly because the game was so cute, I just wanted more of that art!

Great entry!!!

Misty Night by sleepyGrin 2018-04-24T03:54:21Z

I am in love with the art style and the music! It was a little frustrating that you only get one miss and it starts you all the way at the beginning, but the music made it worth it. My only regret is that some of the stages so short, you don't get to hear that variation of the song. :)

I also really liked the subtle bump when you hit each note. Great visual feedback without ruining the mood.

I am a little confused on the incompatible genres though... Is it that spooky games aren't typically rhythm? I dunno, I'm kind of reaching... My only other wish was that I could spend more time looking at what was going on rather than staring at the bottom for the note bars. I totally missed the plot twist that you mentioned. :(

All in all, the game was very fun and I liked it a lot. Even though it was pretty hard!

Farm in 60 seconds by ProfessorRekyl 2018-04-24T05:18:43Z

What a great mash up of genres! I had a GREAT time racing through the level and it was really satisfying to see that combine go spinning out of control. My only complaint is that I'd spend the rest of the level going back and cleaning up what I missed. :( Like a kid having to clean my room!

I think a time trial mode where it dropped you into a giant field and you just had to see how many squares you could get in 60 seconds would be a super fun addition!

Really fun game! Great job!

Date Attack - A Dating Simulator Idle Game by PineappleBox 2018-04-28T02:17:46Z

Congratulations on your first LD! I think this is a really creative concept for your first jam! I thought the story was very imaginative. :)

I'm a big fan of clicker games so my only complaint was that I wished I had more things to "buy" in the store to increase my productivity. I totally agree with the above comments... I love seeing numbers get bigger! Maybe the ending could be based on how long to survive Chris Tine's onslaught? I felt like it ended just as I was starting to get going!

Either way, very creative and a job well done for your first shot! You will get better every jam and who knows... You might make the next Minecraft! :)

Slime Garden by Flameo326 2018-04-28T02:35:00Z

Very ambitious to do a Metroidvania game for compo!

I had a pretty good time exploring the level and jumping around. The movement felt very... "slime-y" in the best kind of way! It felt how it should feel if I were controlling a slime with a sword. :)

I'm not sure if it's a bug or not, but I did find an area where it just endlessly spawned slimes to kill, so I was able to just sit there and mash space bar. I wish I didn't find it... it's almost like that Destiny loot cave. You hate doing it but... I'm leveling up! :( I thought the color-change mechanic was really cool also. At first I thought it was time to me leveling up, but it seemed like it would change constantly? Either way, I liked it since you were the same as the other sprites except... *SPECIAL.*

I think it has a lot of potential if the combat was overhauled a bit, but the feel of the rest of the game was good!

The Bugbear Tavern by Carter Andrews 2018-04-28T02:45:30Z

DUDE. I would play a full version of this SO HARD. It reminds me of the game VA-11 Hall-A! You even have a leg up on that game because you don't get the super satisfying feeling of tossing things into a cauldron.

I think definitely some ambiguity for the recipes would be nice. Also, maybe a patron would request a drink based on flavors or colors rather than just the effects? Who knows... maybe medieval people drank for fun and not just potion effects! :)

The concept is awesome and I'm sure if you had more time, there would be more than one patron per recipe. Seriously... if you made this game a full experience with shinier graphics and polished music. Ugh. My money. PLEASE.
