LD21 — Escape

Escape from the Wolf Castle by Petzi 2011-08-23T07:52:00

I like the exploration style, and it fits the theme well. I wonder if the game originally had a bunny as the protagonist, as you're opening chests, using keys and doors, and wielding a bow! Battle system was super slow and the game crashed immediately on one of my computers. Otherwise it was a good game!

Towering Inferno by tenpn 2011-08-23T06:16:00

There's really a lot of gameplay here for having just a few key elements. Couldn't get the axe to work but it's a fun game without it. Many levels are created too easy, or too hard, and I often wonder which decision is the best one, so I think a level save feature would be great addition. That way I could collect levels which are just barely beatable.

Planetary Mission by NMcCoy 2011-08-30T18:31:00

ooooo I like this one! Great idea with the start screen and "load state" upon death. Short but good level design. Controls felt a bit slidey (and a bit default Flixel physics) for asking the player to traverse one-space-wide platforms.. although it's a small quip because the player could have been faster and not faced it, and supposedly they have already been playing this game and learning the controls for over 46 hours.

Escape the Normal Life by Lancelot Gao 2011-08-24T09:01:00

The gameplay is quite lacking, but, I love the style... title, visuals, running animation... everything fits perfectly together. And it's unique too. Better than empty "skilled art" in my opinion. Set to some good music and a little more gameplay interaction and this could become a medium to get lost in.

Relic Run by Cell 2011-08-30T22:20:00

- Are there bullets stuck on the edge of the screen auto-destroying everything? I'm confused why everything just breaks/appears even when I don't shoot. This seems to break the strategy aspect of "shoot some things, don't shoot other things"
- Hard to tell where the bullets are sometimes when their trails look almost identical. Some weapons in the option menu have a contrast between bullet and trails, but none of the default player/enemy weapons do.
+/- Having four difficulties seemed almost pointless... as far as I could tell the only differences were health and glowing wall of doom speed. Personally, I think difficulty options should offer slightly different experiences (especially if they get their own start game button), not just allowing the user to balance your game to their skill level. On the other hand, it's always good to have more options, and extra options can only add value.
+/- The addition of survival mode is great for a game made under a time limit! It could use some balance/improvement though as the standing-in-the-corner strategy rendered the mode trivial.
+ It was great to be able to control the character in the option screen.
+ Awesome custom skins!

Bunnies, Back Into Your Cage! by ratking 2011-08-30T19:53:00

This game has the most original idea I've seen so far (except mine perhaps ;). Unlike mine it plays smoothly and without major bugs, so props on that! I also don't know why people are raging about the controls... I found them quite straight-forward and simple. In fact I think they're better than the controls in the Kongregate version which are slow to use and don't suit the use of a move counter as well as a one-keypress-per-move system.

Don't Let 'Em... by headchant 2011-08-23T01:58:00

I like the idea, there's a lot of potential there. It's not super balanced and not much replay value when you just need to find the winning strategy, but with more depth it could be really fun.

Snake Plissken: Surfin' U.S.A. by vandriver 2011-08-23T23:22:00

Fun! Hit box seems a bit too large for how fast those double shots spread. I was able to finish the last level with only taking one hit though, so I can't complain. Also, level 3: wtf? Yellowstone and bears are comedy gold in Ludum Dare.

Gunz And Sedanzz by Farfin 2011-08-23T22:57:00

Ahahahahaha brilliant presentation! I was forced into a footrace once three cops stacked up, but otherwise it was a great experience. The beginning, music switch, and ending were great!

Cave Runner by DecsterB 2011-08-23T22:45:00

The first keyboard/mouse sidescroller I've seen so far, and it's pretty good! The premise is great and the obstacles are varied. If I could make one suggestion, speed up as you drop loot.

Escape Run by erko 2011-08-24T08:49:00

Looks interesting but won't run on my computer's crappy resolution. Can't resize/move window because the game locks out my mouse, and hotkeys don't work either. :\

Haunted Escape by cjke.7777 2011-08-30T20:19:00

This concept could develop a fun narative game if it was expanded. And the first ghost to chase me actually gave me a scare!

In my first playthrough I only encountered one locked door before I found the key for it. I played through a second time checking more doors before grabbing the keys, and found a second locked door. It'd be nice to see where the locked doors are, or have some indication about when a key is used. I don't know if I did use all 3 keys, or if there was a secret area I never found.

The only special thing I did find was a way to break the game by going diagonally out of a room. At least I couldn't find the player after I did that, and had to restart.

Spaceman Spiff by mlb 2011-08-24T05:37:00

Neat game. I wish the controls were a little more smooth though. I don't have the patience at the moment to get through that cloud level. I'll try another day.

Tetts escape! by zoral 2011-08-23T00:03:00

Even with XNA installed the game crashes on both my computers (running Windows XP). :(

Freeway escape by Bartje321 2011-08-23T04:54:00

Not a very creative game... sticks to a formula with nothing new. I made a game very similar to this myself once. I don't really like the damage meter/system.

Otherwise it's quite fun to play! I loved the acceleration/brake controls... felt very smooth and realistic. I thought side to side was a little to drifty but I got used to it quickly. I do actually like how the traffic blocks you out and you have to pay attention to the relative speed different lanes. The lights are nice but they seem to trail with the screen.

Dystopian Future Underground City by j_peeba 2011-09-11T22:46:00

Awesome game! I have a little dislike against the controls simply because they're almost the same as one of my most hated games from my childhood. However the drag you have helps with cornering, so it's not that bad.

The great music and smooth graphics really drew me in. Something else I enjoy in games with quick restarts--high difficulty! Your game is indeed quite hard at parts, but that just makes it require more concentration. I had a lot of trouble with levels 5 and 9 my first time through. While writing this I played through the game a second time and found it a lot easier (but still fun and challenging to replay).

I will note that I couldn't beat level 9 by getting the key. I instead chose to kamakaze straight through the lock from the start!

I would suggest you smooth out the difficulty with more easy levels though... wide open swinging turns are very fun! Back-and-forth parts are really hard the first time through when you don't know the best path to avoid the cops piling up behind you.

But yeah, great game. Really enjoyed it!

Escape from Shimishland by CaptainLepidus 2011-08-23T08:17:00

Hmm... I got stuck on the edge of the map while getting out of the helicoptor, stuck while going up a lift, and stuck when someone jumped on my head. Each time I had to restart the whole game. But I guess losing by getting stuck fits the theme well :)
The text instructions were helpful but not very immersive.

Free Bee by seism 2011-08-23T22:21:00

576 and won on first try, but when I tried to do better I kept losing. Bees are frustrating critters, aren't they?

Globular Prisonbreak! by Edsploration 2011-08-24T07:56:00

Thanks for the comments! They Match my thoughts on it so far. Actually I tried last minute to fix the brute forcing past barriers but ended up breaking rotation further.. changed it back and resulted in more bugs overall. This was my first ludum dare so I'm happy regardless of the initial result. :D
