I've heard it described as "how a toddler with a handful of dice might play DnD"

Love how the concept came together, feels really unique and original. Would love to see it with other types of dice (d4 through d20) and other effects!

astrayrae 2024-10-06 23:41

Thanks @importusername ! And also thanks for both the ideas and hanging out :D

There is in fact a good chance I'll continue work on this.

Awesome idea, it wasn't clear at first that I had to throw the dice at the enemies and I spent a few games confused as to why I didn't hurt anything. When I figured out that I did need to hit them, I found aiming the throw to be rather difficult. I would love to see some Qol improvements to help with this in the future. Great job!

nimbushead 2024-10-07 22:18

Clever concept! Simple gameplay, and well-designed stages. It's hard to tell where I'm throwing the dice, and it took me a minute to realize that some of the pieces were mine and others were my enemy's.

Easily my favorite game I've played so far out of the jam entries. Very unique concept, very good execution. A bit more polish on stuff like U.I. and atmosphere and this would be a genuinely incredibly fun full product. Outstanding work!

adrien-tremblay 2024-10-10 01:30

Interesting take on 'tiny creatures' -> Tabletop!

khaotom 2024-10-10 01:51

Ah perspective, my archnemesis we meet again. I think I'd prefer a peggle style aiming cursor rather than the drag and drop. Fun concept nonetheless!

library-rat 2024-10-10 02:13

A really fun concept, had a hard time aiming at the enemies but thats on me ;p

astrayrae 2024-10-10 02:18

Thanks everyone!

@khaotom Yeah the aiming thing is actually kind of a problem. I've experimented a bit after the compo and it gets slightly better once you are able to move the camera, but even then hitting is somewhat iffy (and moving the camera has its own problems).

And yeah I'm planning to at least try out an aiming system like peggle or peglin has. Although I can imagine that it might take away from the feeling of rolling dice (which admittedly has a way to go still anyway).

thesand 2024-10-10 04:31

This could really have potential! The only problem I had was my bad aiming, had some trouble actully hitting the enemys. But other than that, I could really see myself play this kind of game! Well done, great entry! :)

tetrergeru 2024-10-10 15:13

Cool idea. A liked the sound of clacking and rolling very much. Most of the dice feel actually pretty weak compared to default 1d6 (That's why it is trusty, after all)

scott-redrup 2024-10-10 21:26

A really innovative game, great work on this. Admittedly it did take my a while to realise you had to actually hit the enemies with the dice, also I found it quite hard to roll them using a trackpad - and instead just resorted to dropping dice on their head. Really enjoyed this though.

adamg 2024-10-11 00:14

Wow, this is really cool! Combining physics with a turn based game is always interesting, and it works surprisingly well here. Rolling of the dice with a mouse feels a little difficult to get it right, but regardless of whether the dice goes where I want it to, it's fun

astrayrae 2024-10-11 02:39

Thanks again everyone!

@tetrergeru I was really happy with how the sound turned out! It's using one recorded sound per material that is hit that is then adjusted in volume/pitch based on velocity/some randomness. The biggest problem was actually getting a singular "ding"/"clack"/etc. from a dice instead of multiples of them. Took me quite a bit of manual rolling . 1d6 Supremacy!

@scott-redrup Wow doing this with a track-pack seems daunting. Although even with a mouse it's not easy!

@adamg Yeah the aiming is somewhat... dicey. Funnily enough, the original plan was to be even more turn based/tabletop-y with the idea being that the enemies move towards and attack the players. Which in turn would mean that pushing an enemy away would help by itself, even if it didn't do damage. Obviously time constraints nixed that idea.

dzejpi 2024-10-11 15:46

Very interesting concept and I played it for a while, which says something, because I am usually not into these kinds of games! I would personally prefer if I could grab the dice by holding the mouse right away without clicking on it first, would feel more natural for me. Took me a bit to figure out that I had to hit the enemies (and who is enemy, haha), but then it made a lot of sense! With some extra work, I think this could be a really good one, glad to see that you're going to be working on this afterwards!

astrayrae 2024-10-11 19:42

@dzejpi Thank you! Oh wow yeah just grabbing them right away would make total sense, ngl I hadn't actually though of it  Will try out how that feels!

adam-gallina 2024-10-12 00:51

Really fun concept! I really liked the dice noises, and the physics were well designed. I can definitely see this game being a lot of fun if you decide to work on it more, there's a lot of cool gameplay elements that could be added

sdcorpse 2024-10-12 01:25

Dice sounds and game visual are very nice!

mithoskuu 2024-10-12 06:15

Interesting concept, I would love more dice types to play around with

magalek 2024-10-12 10:46

Cool idea, but I was sad when I realized you can just drop the dice on the enemy's head instead of having to aim and throw, which I think would make for a more interesting concept. Overally, with more polishing it could be a really nice game.

mayple 2024-10-12 18:07

Really interesting concept and something unique which I've never seen before. Lots of room to grow this game which is pretty awesome. Nice work!

astrayrae 2024-10-12 18:57

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

@mithoskuu Will do! :smile:

@magalek Yeah dropping is kind of overpowered  I've got some ideas on how to fix that, but all the "solutions" so far also have some drawbacks. E.g. I could restrict from where you can start a roll (e.g. only around your player chars), but that makes the actual rolling somewhat less satisfying. I could also just "disallow" dropping, but that feels also kinda off. Oh well, I will find a solution somehow

googoobachoo 2024-10-13 19:56

Very interesting game mechanic! I find it hard to aim, though. For sake of fairness I think the DM should have to throw dice as well. The monsters seemingly hit every time! The graphics are well done, I like the dm screen :)

bentglasstube 2024-10-13 21:36

This is a really cool concept and I love the physical aspect of rolling to attack. I had a really hard time with the game and I couldn't even beat level 2. The art of the miniatures and the sounds of the dice were great. Nice work.

astrayrae 2024-10-14 05:28

@googoobachoo Thank you! Dang DMs always cheating, next thing you know he'll drop some rocks on your whole party!

@bentglasstube Thank you! Yeah ngl, the game as is is really hard. I have maybe a 50% winrate and I have played the game for quite a while for testing after all. Hopefully I'll be able to balance it a bit more fairly in the future (better aiming, some roguelike elements, more player hp, dice unlocks, etc. should hopefully help).

niterich 2024-10-17 16:04

Very creative! I love the idea of this game, and the artstyle is nice and vibrant and highly legible from a gameplay perspective. I do think the game is too hard, though: while rolling the dice is a neat concept, it's kind of hard to accurately do in practice. I think that could be part of the fun, but the strict 4-turn limit was simply too much to ask for me. I'd be interested in seeing that Peggle-style change you mentioned above!

whatiswhat 2024-10-24 02:52

Great Idea! It reminded me heavily of table top simulator. I just wish there was a way to rotate the die in your hand
