Besides the horrible headache I got (probably FOV) it was an ok game, all aspects complemented the game well. Audio was probably my favourite part.

minjutin 2024-04-16 09:52

The atmosphere is great, it's well textured and lighting torches is somehow really satisfying

zekysky 2024-04-16 15:47

Wow i liked the way u adapt the 3D to a pixel art style. Despite i think that in some points u cant see cous of the light, is a great game

anchry 2024-04-16 16:02

Love the graphics and the overall atmosphere, the music goes great with it. I did however have some issues with the gameplay, after getting the first summon I just got kinda stuck. Might just be me being a bit thick but I was unable to finish a single one of the timed challenges, also failed the platforming one. None of them seemed quite possible. Regardless of all of that i thoroughly enjoyed failing at the game, fantastic entry!

Nice graphics

seanz 2024-04-16 16:15

Actually, got lost in the game for like an hour. A++ game y'all.

chybby 2024-04-16 16:23

@anchry Thanks for the comment! Don't worry, I can definitely understand how you'd get stuck. This is the first time we've created a large level for one of our jam games so there's definitely a lot we can learn about level design and guiding the player. In case you feel like trying again, the second spirit is in the room where you need to get past the sliding blocks.

very-dark-lord 2024-04-17 18:14

Very cool game! Took a while to get through it all, particularly the maze, even once I had the necessary spirits, and I feel like you maybe overdid it with the darkness a bit. :D But still very nice puzzles and it felt like a real achievement to solve them all. Plus it's always a cool feeling when you unlock some new ability and immediately can see what you can use it for. I loved the way the spirits mystically fly from where you find them to their place in the center. Very nice concept, and obviously fits the theme well. The ending animation was unexpected and great! And the megaphone made me chuckle. :D

Personally if I were to suggest any improvements, I'd probably say that it might still make sense to brighten the game up a bit, at least increase the view distance when carrying the torch (I get that you need complete darkness in the maze otherwise), and maybe open up the puzzle rooms one by one so that it's a bit clearer where to focus one's effort at first? Was quite confusing and disorienting with everything available directly. But of course that also made the solutions a bit more satisfying. But these are detail and maybe just personal taste. Great job overall. :ok_hand:

I loved the nifty puzzles (especially the one with the trail, that was quite creative). I got stuck after acquiring the star, but with the help of my buddy @very-dark-lord, we made it to the end. Overall very good and well-rounded.

neontropics 2024-04-17 21:45

Really good vibes on this one and overall very polished entry! Great moody music and the graphics had the perfect balance of being dark but also always seeing something you could go explore.

On the one hand I like that it was open and you just explored this creepy castle without much guidance, but on the other hand I do get impatient pretty quick when I don't know what to do next.

salanyel 2024-04-19 00:58

The ambiance is pretty good, I like the old pixel look.

It reminds me off the old waiting labyrinth desktop from windows!

just-a-cat 2024-04-19 01:38

Seemed really cool, but I couldn't finish it. No matter how fast I went, I was always at least like 5 seconds off from finishing the moving block section on time. Not sure if it's just an issue on my end or I'm missing something, but either way the game seemed really cool

jamieok 2024-04-20 23:34

Gorgeous visuals, I'm a sucker for the pixelated look. Very nearly quit as I just WASN'T fast enough to complete the maze and moving block time trials quick enough, but luckily found the other route to get the speed spirit. Everything was smooth sailing from there so my only feedback would be to make the ledge where the speed spirit is found a little more noticeable. Other than that, awesome game and really glad I stuck with it!

rradu 2024-04-21 17:01

really great visuals and the gameplay seemed interesting unfortunately I was completely lost in the huge dark rooms for a long time until I found my second power-up which made me drop the lantern and made it near impossible to go anywhere basically. Big design flaw that holds back a probably great game

azathothep 2024-04-21 17:09

Nice entry that definitely sets a mood! I really liked the artstyle, you really nailed something. The exploration gameplay was good, I've become a bit lost quite quickly and missed there wasn't some visual elements that helped me orientate mayself. I was also expecting a bit more pressure put on me by some danger right at the start, which would have crank up the mood further, but other that that it was a nice experience. Congratulations for your game!

muhyrla 2024-04-21 19:11

It was very interesting and atmospheric to play, thank you!

It seems that besides summoning, the second LD theme is puzzles

goldyxen 2024-04-22 18:31

I've almost beaten the game but got stuck in a pedestal.

Great audio and insanely achieved mood. Sadly, the mood was so well achieved I couldn't get far cause I'm a coward, so I'm only voting in the categories I could appreciate. Sorry sorry sorry!

niterich 2024-04-25 21:22

I feel like there's the making of a great game in here - the audio is on point and the visuals are distinct and charming. ...that is, when I can actually see the visuals. Maybe there's an issue on my end, but your game has a very painful visibility problem. Most of the time, it's nearly pure black on my screen, with the sparse torches often being hidden due to the pixelization. But picking up Pyron didn't help either, since the bloom from it just turned the screen from pure black to pure white. I'd love to see what else is in the game, but I had to quit after lighting five torches just because I could not see where I was going

tenshi42 2024-04-25 21:57

Very very nice ! I love your graphism ! Maybe it is a little bit too dark on a HRD display though ^^'

creeper-nade 2024-04-26 12:18

The pixelated graphic is pretty cool! However, in dark areas, I could barely see things, which is kinda hard for doing puzzles. There could also be more guides and hints, sometimes I don't really know what to do :(. But overall the game is good

polygraph-polypraphovich 2024-04-26 12:28

Really liked the art style of the game! I actually think that it could be a great horror game, but puzzle looks nice too.

2024-04-26 21:23

Wow really cool game for a jam! Great puzzles, great graphics, well done.

prismapunch 2024-04-26 21:30

Looks very good! It was so unbelievably dark that I spent a good 15 minutes just roaming around in the same room trying to solve the puzzle, looking at a nearly pitch pitch black screen. The puzzles were interesting, and I'm glad that the first summon you find is a lantern (who lights your way for approx. 15 seconds then never again) The rooms seem massive for such a game, evidently when I had to look at the pedestal and walk backwards for most of it in the main room since I couldn't see anything else!

Graphics are great, audio was great, summoning wasn't utilized much except as a "you completed this puzzle" goal, but still good nonetheless.

sweetwizzle 2024-04-27 14:49

This was very good -- the look and sound fit the theme perfectly, and it was represented well in the gameplay too.

The rooms consistently felt too big though; there's a lot of empty space that you have to traverse, and much of it in complete darkness. The disorientation was probably intentional, but it occasionally had a negative impact on the pacing.

The puzzles designed around the spirits were nicely done, though the gear-gating could have been a little clearer, since trying a puzzle I was not prepared for also felt like wasted time.

Those points aside, the atmosphere and gameplay were enjoyable, and this definitely ranks high for me. Nice work!

tod-semple 2024-05-02 15:43

Really good vibe! I like the sound effects and art style. I could have used a bit more direction. At the start I followed the light sources and that was cool. When I got the lantern I felt a bit aimless and just had to walk in a random direction. Eventually I ended up in a rat maze without any tools to get out. I followed the left wall for a while, but I felt like I wasn't making any progress. I think it could have used a few clues along the way to direct me in the best direction.

shasaur 2024-05-02 23:00

Phenomenal mood. I was pretty horrified the whole time. The art style is super super nice, love the combo of pixel art dungeon crawler, but creepy and mysterious.

Maybe the only thing is that it felt a bit challenging at times.

Also +1 because Godot :D

very-dark-lord 2024-05-07 08:01

Honestly I'm a bit surprised by the ratings not ending up better for this one. This game just had this special something that I rarely find in LD games. Not sure what it is exactly. Maybe some mixture of being really hooking/engaging while also having a surprising depth of content. It also felt very unique and memorable. Maybe these qualities aren't perfectly captured by e.g. "fun" and "innovation", or people interpret them differently than I would. Either way, just wanted to say again that I really enjoyed it, and I think it deserves more recognition! :D

chybby 2024-05-07 17:40

@very-dark-lord Thank you, your comment made my day :) I'm not too fussed about low scores as long as we learned a lot that we can apply to future games. We tried some new things we've never done before with this one like designing a large level to explore and trying to establish a spooky atmosphere. I think some common and fair complaints were that the game didn't offer enough guidance on what to do or where to go next and that the darkness required for the maze puzzle made the rest of the game annoying to navigate. The first problem stems from our inexperience in designing large game levels and the second one from our inexperience in creating games that aren't well lit by a single directional light representing the sun. We'll learn from our mistakes and make something better next time :)
