The idea of the warp bubble is cool, though I felt like it didn't have all that much effect. This fits creatively into the theme. I also noticed the movement felt smooth and well polished.

These ship modules are awesome. really cool mechanic. I got killed mostly by my own bullets :))

kinami 2023-10-03 10:02

Cool little game! ✨

I actually made a similar game a while back. I thought it was really cool how the bullets bounced back from the bubble.

One thing I thought was a bit frustrating is not being able to strafe (move sideways). In these kinds of games (fast linear projectiles, player character acceleration) it's _really_ hard to dodge if you only have turn and forward controls. WASD movement + Click to shoot would have made it a lot more snappy in my opinion.

Other than that, I really enjoyed the game! It fit the theme very well! 😄

Nice little game that kept me going for a bit. Are some modules rarer then others? I played five roundes and managed to get up to level 5, but all I ever got were lasers (of which I could only attachh 3 in total) or something that made me blink for a bit. Enjoyed it for a bit, but felt like the enemies could be coming a bit faster. Always had to wait for the next one to destroy ;)

That was fun, the bubble's visual effect looks super cool and this is a nice concept for the theme. I agree with Kinami that the game is very hard when it comes to shooting + dodging, maybe a strafe or dash mechanic would've helped.

Anyway, congrats on making this on you own :)

I liked the game and upgrading my ship ^^ If anything, it was a bit hard at the start and the bullets bouncing caught me by surprise :D Pretty enjoyable

Neat game! I found it a bit difficult because of the reflected bullets from the bubble, but that kind of mechanic is a fun take on this genre. The random powerups are great.

sarenei 2023-10-04 17:37

Cool game and definitely fits the theme. The visuals and audio are good and the game as a whole feels polished and complete.

My one criticism is that I found it pretty hard to avoid taking damage. Being able to strafe would add a lot.

moebius 2023-10-04 17:57

I hear you dear commenters. Maybe I should do a post ldjam version that changes the mechanics to a more direct approach.

kiberptah 2023-10-04 18:07

What I liked: - I can attach gun to shoot myself - Interesting mechanic - Clear goals and controls

What I didn't like - Shooting sound hurts my head - Very high difficulty, it is almost impossible not to shoot myself after lvl 2 - Game feels a bit too random because it is hard to dodge your own bullets and hard not to miss when yuo have a bunch of guns attached.

Suggestions: - Maybe if background would be close to camera, more like a floor (asteroid field), it would be easier to orient yourself and maneuver.

moebius 2023-10-04 18:31

> Shooting sound hurts my head

That's intentional - I call it immersive gaming

I can only agree with the rest of the comments, had a blast shooting down enemies, they for sure did less damage to me then myself, and I muted the sounds about 8 seconds after the tutorial  Great entry!

bigstrongddoge 2023-10-04 18:56

A fun, but challenging space game! The game is actually quite on-theme, since the bubble can reduce in size and as a player you want to have as much space as possible. I'm seeing some suggestions in the comments and I'm curious what you would change or add to a post-jam version perhaps?

alpie 2023-10-04 18:59

A funny self-harm game lol

It's easier when you fly backwards btw, for all my fellow self-harm ship commanders ;D

Hey, just played 'Ship in a Bubble' by Moebius. The contracting bubble mechanic is a neat twist on the shoot-em-up genre. I love how you can upgrade the ship with dropped modules, but sometimes the randomness can be tricky. Some players mentioned the challenge of dodging without strafing—might be worth considering. The visuals, especially the bubble effect, look sleek. The bouncing bullets and power-ups add depth. A fun play with a fresh approach to the genre!

@bigstrongddoge here is what I would potentially add/change in a post-jam version: * change the way the ship is controlled, so that it's possible to dodge bullets more easily * add more ship modules and more projectile types, which would allow for a broader variety of enemy ships as well as more tactical possibilities * maybe add some kind of button activated short term shielding that needs time or specific items to recharge * put more time into balancing * add a way to control the volume, and/or make the sounds a little better * add online leader board for highscores

Nice mechanics! I liked the idea of the game. It would have needed some balances. I think you the ship pieces should have separate health as now you don't want your ship to become bigger as it's only a bigger target then. That's my main gripe.

However I liked the brutalness of the game that you shouldn't miss much of the shots or they might bounce back to you and the idea of separating and connecting the upgrades was great.

The shooting sound was a bit annoying and the game could have benefited of more different sounds.

There was something weird in the controls. When I held turning button, the ship would sometimes stop turning and only turn again when I let go of the button and press again. I'm not sure if my keyboard just broke or if it's the game, but I don't remember having similar problem before this.

moebius 2023-10-06 20:40

Thanks for your feedback @tomssuli. Never encountered the bug you described before, but I'll add it to the list for the post-jam version. Also the idea of having health per module was also something I considered but dismissed because of time constraints. But I will also look into it for the post-jam version.

meo-benderson 2023-10-07 20:40

Not sure if I understand how to Dodge bullets :-D

1257th-or-nothing 2023-10-07 22:37

Well in the theme. The bouncing bulets was a funny idea, but it's really difficult (for me...) to dodge my own bullets.

caeonosphere 2023-10-08 01:00

Cool! Would love to see a twin-stick version of this, though maybe that makes it too easy. I've experimented before with mechanics that punish inaccuracy, and this is a really nice one. Couldn't quite understand the physics of the warp bubble: how projectiles slow down after bouncing and then accelerate. Maybe a simpler, more predictable bounce would have been better for me, though it seems like you were representing some physical phenomenon that went over my head. :)

bluedandelion 2023-10-08 13:54

Very cool game with very unique mechanics. The bouncing bullets are really hard to dodge and I sadly couldn't get past level 2... Nevertheless you did a good job!

ramonvicious 2023-10-12 20:36

Got flashbacks on our Ludum Dare #49 game on yours game preview. Nice game, but a little bit hard as for me. GG overall!

moebius 2023-10-13 08:42

@ramonvicious wow you're right, your entry looks quite similar (though yours looks a lot more polished). I did not really take part in LD49, so I didn't see it before but I guess the idea of a modular ship is not too uncommon . Anyways thanks for playing & rating my game!

tetrapteryx 2023-10-18 12:19

This is cool, I really like the modular ship idea! The art is very nice too. It might have been nice to have a little warning indicator in the direction of approaching enemies so I'd have a couple of seconds to prepare

rewzu 2023-10-19 20:26

Quite nice concept. I love how wonky your ship can get. The shooting sound was a bit annoying but other than that it was a neat experience. Great entry!
