This looks like fun and I’d love to give it a try… but I’m reluctant to install Java. In the source code it looks like there might be a web version—are you considering putting that up?

bisnesspirate 2023-10-03 09:07

Quite an enjoyable little game. The movement however does not feel the greatest, I feel like I barely move faster than th zombies which makes it feel off. Also the hitboxes of some of the scenery felt a bit off and made it seem like I should be able to move in there but wasn't able to.

lelulagames 2023-10-03 12:45

It looks fun but I don't want to download a jar file either. Are you uploading the web version?

manabreak 2023-10-03 13:14

Nice work! Got a bit repetitive after a while, and was quite short, but nice work overall. :)

ex3d0 2023-10-03 23:38

@mahalis @lelulagames Not a problem at all I completely understand :). Unfortunately LibGDX's web builds can be *super* finnicky and at the moment I can't get it working hence why I didn't publish it. Will definitely let you know if I get it working!

@bisnesspirate Thanks! I definitely agree the movement and collisions are one of the rougher parts of the game, definitely didn't have the time to polish it. I'm glad you enjoyed it besides that though!

@manabreak Thanks! I definitely wish I had the time to make the enemies a bit more distinct/interesting and add in some other ideas to reduce the overall repetitiveness, I'm glad you enjoyed it though :)

Very short and simple, not bad. The art is quite good, and I liked the variation in the zombies. If you plan on updating it, I think adding more obstacles and LOS could make it feel less repetitive. Kinda like an arcade-style Left 4 Dead. Overall, great job!

jason-shapiro 2023-10-04 00:17

AHHHH Where did the zombies get guns? THEY'VE GAINED INTELLIGENCE RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!

This is super cute. I liked the sounds. I wished the bullets were a bit slower and I wanted 8 directions. I also wish the first button didn't restart it so I could revel in being a zombie myself for a spell. Nicely done!!

nick-rafalski 2023-10-04 02:48

Very cute, and the art and music are very cohesive. It seems a little unfair that the shooting zombie can shoot at arbitrary angles and I can only shoot on cardinal directions, but it was still a fun time :)

its-capp 2023-10-04 15:22

the art style is very cute, I feel the gameplay is a little *too* simple and I didn't understand how the theme came into play other than the camera not moving. it's pretty solid.

unfinished632 2023-10-04 15:55

Good game but i didn't like that you can only move in one direction at a time and also it doesn't really fit the theme that much. But the music and the visuals are fantastic! Keep up the good work!

Cool little game! Here is some feedback after playing for a while:

- Maybe next time give some instructions how to launch the jar. There are lots of people here who are smart enough to figure it out, but you can make the barier to play even smaller with a little explaination :-) - I thought the open door in the building was for some kind of shop or something. Usually in games an open door means an entry to something - The stones are a cool addition. You could make it, so that bullets don't travel though them. Therefor making the stones not only obstacles, but also shielding - The movement felt a bit off. I don't know why. Maybe because the shooting direction is the same as your last moving direction. I don't know how that could be changed, but it felt a bit off - I like the overall design language of the game. The graphics fit together. Same deal with the music and sound design. In that department this game feels very polished.

Cool little game my friend!

I was able to finish it on the second playthrough! The only thing that was a little bit clunky was the shooting and the movement! For some reason when shooting enemies vertically it was not working as expected. Anyway, the graphics, the music and the sound effects were nice! The implementation of the theme is the fact that you do not have any extra space to go (am I right?).

Anyway, nice entrance and good job! Keep up!

ex3d0 2023-10-18 23:00

Hey everyone! Thanks for playing (and sorry for the delayed reply got wrapped up in life the past few weeks haha)

@treblecolby I definitely think both of those would be really neat additions!

@jason-shapiro Haha thanks :) I definitely wish I had time to implement 8-directional (or possibly even omnidirectional movement) I guess I felt the 4-directional movement grid lended itself more into the retro-style feel but it does feel arbitrarily limiting.

@nick-rafalski I can agree with that, honestly the shooting zombies were added fairly last minute so I didn't have a whole lot of time to implement it and agree that it can be unfair at times.

@its-capp Yeah the theme sorta took a backseat, I had some other ideas to make the gameplay loop more exciting or to further connect to the theme (my original idea was that dead zombies would stay on the map to further limit the playable space as the game went on) but either had problems pulling them off or ran into time constraints.

@unfinished632 Thanks!

@wouter52 All completely fair critiques, I made the one building have an open door just to add a bit of variation but I can see how it'd be confusing. I also definitely agree the movement feels a bit clunky and definitely wish I had more time to polish it up.

@deadbydeath Yeah the implementation of the theme is definitely that you're in a really tiny town. There's also the whole Old West movie trope of "this town ain't big enough for the both of us" which is what led me to do a wild west theme but it doesn't really come across in the gameplay. I'm glad you enjoyed playing it!

scarytreegames 2023-10-18 23:18

The game looks good! The gameplay is very simple. Nice pixel art. Overall it's a fun game :)

saramartins 2023-10-19 01:05

The pixel art is super cute, the whole setting is very non conventional with the zombie theme, but that makes it stand out. The player's animation was super fast but it was cute, with his tiny legs :D The song gets a bit repetitive quick, so that could be an improvement. The waves start getting pretty fast paces soon, although a particular zombie was always just chillin' on the other side of the building and I had to go get it lol The shooting zombies are a nice twist, and they make the game hard 😅 A nice addition could be having a shop building and entering to upgrade your gear. Really cute game, keep working on it!

lincolnsalles 2023-10-19 06:52

Good pixel art. There is no lack of extra hearts or another way to increase energy from time to time. When I kill the last enemy the hordes appear very quickly with many around me very unexpectedly. The progression of difficulty is very fast, it gets difficult very quickly. The look is well done. It's a great example of a jam entry, simple and small and functional.

minjutin 2023-10-19 07:08

Yas the pixel art is pretty, reminds me of some online games I played as a child. The zombies with guns felt really hard at first until I realized how to beat them. As one person compo game it's really impressive

sozey 2023-10-20 14:32

Awesome work! It's definitely impressive to pull this off in two days. The graphics are neat and the gameplay is fun!
