It is indeed fun to climb on the giant!
It's a nice use of wheat. The climbing seemed less precise when the camera is looking straight up / straight down. Getting up is easier than getting down.
Anyway, congratulations for your entry !
This was a nice little game. I will say you may want to limit the range of rotation on your camera. One because you can look from the underside of the world, but two because you are changing the direction that the player is facing based on the camera's forward position, the problem is when the camera is a a 90 degrees angle up or down the players movement speed is dramatically reduced because the forward vector of the camera is forcing it into the ground. Outside of that your gameplay worked well and your webgl version isn't to bad lag wise. Good work.

Thanks for playing ! @arscene @theseusinabottle
I did some tweak on movement based on camera facing direction. I may have forgot to only get X and Z axis though.
About the camera rotation, it is actually clamped to -80°/80° but I guess it might be too much  . About looking from underside, I was thinking about using Cinemachine camera that could handle it well, but I didn't have time to look on it unfortunately.
Thanks both of you for your reviews !
Never played shadow of Colossus but really enjoyed the game mechanics. Runs smooth and controls are pretty good. Good job :).
Pretty good, it would be nice if the character had some damage to make the game a little harder. Also some of the movements of the giant seemed a bit random and didn't really make sense.
Other than that it was a really nice small game!
I also never played Shadow of the Colossus, but now I wonder if I need to play it. This was really fun. I liked that I could see the fists aiming at me, and then riding them back up to the collosus :) Reading your comment about having limited time (I always over-scope too and need to cut back a ton), I think you made the right call focusing on the climbing. It's really satisfying.

Cool, I claimed the colossus! I feel like our games have similar art styles.
Playing shadow of the colossus music while playing this hits perfectly.
Very fun idea to use the wheat for climbing energy, kinda gave you more of a reason to go down again, unlike a stamina meter. Had a good time climbing around the colossus, well done!

I am on top of the colossus! Good job I like the "tool" swing and the climbing was very clean :)

That mouse sensitivity was really high. I beat it in about a minute flat in WebGL, and then went back and played the PC version just to see if the mouse sensitivity was any better. It's a little better, but still way too high.
The framerate in the web version is almost unplayable, but the desktop version runs well.
Very interesting concept. If you swing at a few bushes on your way to the boss you will already have more than enough wheat to finish him. Maybe reduce the collection so you have to collect and attack him a couple times before winning.

@smashcrate @cloverfall @pincushion @madr @captaindreamcast @muriel @justin-c Thanks for playing ! :heart:
@smashcrate @pincushion I actually never played Shadow of the Colossus too lol. But I saw some gameplay videos and these Colossus in the game are really impressive ! Coupled with good music, effects, camera shaking, the game has this kind of woah effect when fighting them (or at least that's what I was feeling when watching). There are some kind of downside such as some bad glitch while climbing or having to travel long landscape (it seems to be a kind of open world) but I would definitely recommand it if you seek for some epic boss fight ! :muscle:
@cloverfall Yea, I didn't have time to make something more challenging haha
@justin-c The camera sensitivity could be modified in the options when pausing the game (by pressing 'Escape'). This was one of the option I absolutely wanted to add in the game for playability haha. As for the amount of wheat, as the game is just about a small arena, I wanted at least the player to have enough to fool around on climbing everywhere he wants.

Good stuff, very funny. I love it. But, there wasn't much to do. Even still, it was the first one I clicked on because it looked funny. Great
That was really fun! harvesting the wheat and then watching my wheat counter tick down as I climbed the monster had me carefully considering where I could get to next that wouldn't use more resources. I also very much enjoyed leaping from its shoulders to smack the targets near its hands.

Clever use of the collected wheat for climbing energy! I enjoyed the throwback to SotC and the somewhat silly take on the theme ;) The controls/camera are not perfect but worked well enough for me.
Nice concept! Quite fun to climb, but not obvious how much wheat you need to get to a certain spot.
wow Colossus! I enjoyed a good fight. but the theme is weakly fitted, I spent like 20s to collect wheat and it already enough for my entire fight which mean I don't need to harvest anymore after 20s in the game. but I am glad you do that because the fighting part is much more fun than harvesting. Maybe can have more mechanism to interact with the wheat so harvesting is more meaningful but I know that require a lot more works. Having said that, comment in short, good fight but bad wheat

Fun idea! I love SotC and it's tricky implement a good climbing system in one weekend, but you did a nice job! I like the idea that you need to harvest food in order to have enough stamina to climb all the way up. Pretty good approximation of the colossus weak points, too. All in all, this is an impressive amount of work for a short jam!
Well.. I CHOPPED his head off! Congratz of participating and good luck in the next one! :) wheater-of-the-colossus.png
Cool idea. You're right, it was fun climbing on the giant. The movement controls weren't working for me on the web version, but the Windows version worked fine. The camera sensitivity felt a bit off though. Even though I could adjust it in the menu, I had to drop it down to basically it's lowest point and I don't know how anyone would want it to be at it's maximum. To me it would have been nicer if the camera sensitivity scale was a bit lower. It would have made it easer to adjust and like I said, I don't know who would want it to be at the crazy high end of the spectrum. But maybe that's just me.
Regardless, getting the whole climbing the colossus mechanic into a compo game is impressive. Well done!
I was wondering what the game meant by "use wheat to defeat the giant". Does the giant have Celiac disease? It wasn't until I noticed the wheat stalks on the side of one of the boxes I had climbed up that I figured it out. Very unique idea. Only then was it time to climb to the top!
There were definitely a lot of things that should have been polished. The camera should not be able to clip through the ground. (I'm sure you can find a tutorial for making the camera collide with the world.) The default sensitivity is crazy high. (To get it to a tolerable value, I had to be extremely precise with my mouse movements. You should have put in a sensitivity setting for the sensitivity menu :P. I also don't think it's necessary to have separate sensitivity for X and Y.) Movement acceleration always makes movement feel better. Sounds (even simple ones) give more weight to your actions in-game.
Sucks that it took so long to get that one feature working. I'm sure many of the things I listed would have been there if you had time. Either way, nice little prototype!
One of the biggest challenges is not to put a theme in our game, but to turn theme into a game. Your model shows that well. Congratulations. I found it quite complete by the time, theme and engine used. I could have put sounds and songs on, to give more excitement. But I really liked the idea.

It’s a very good challenge! As you said even if there are few main futures as a game, I enjoyed the feeling of climbing on big stuff a lot!
