Funny. I wish I got to see the aliens.

The music getting more intense really makes this shine, I tried to collect more candy just to see how intense it would get and I always ended up getting shot before it felt like I was running out of levels the music could go to.

@jibberwocky I'm sorry, I may have confused you with my links to the previous games in my series, I've fixed them to point to their LD pages instead.

The link to my LD51 submission is here: https://landarvargan.itch.io/trick-or-retreat-310

This was a nice and funny experience xD I retried a couple times, and got to the part where the aliens explain their intentions. It's a shame that you have to get there to understand where the Theme comes in, but other than that this was pretty nice! I'd like to see a finished version of this little adventure.

Cool game! I like that there is a lockpicking minigame inside this story. It felt a bit out of place though, because I could not discover any other minigames. (did I miss something?) I think this game could use two more of those minigames to make the whole game more complete. Then again, I think this is very impressive for a 48 hour gamejam. A view years back I made a text adventure and I learned that it wasn't really my cup of tea.. Lots of hours went into designing the storytree itself. I see that you made clever use of loops into the story, so some choises would eventually merge. Very clever

Nice game! Good solid story and like the mini game :D Nice work

This is a great little text game and story. It brings back memories of choose-your-own-adventure books from long ago. I like the music and text effects, and the lock picking minigame was a pleasant surprise. It was fun going back and exploring all of the different text paths; by the end I wished there were a few more or it was a bit longer. I made a point-and-click adventure game recently and it was a lot of fun writing it, I hope this one was for you too. I appreciate that the individual text prompts aren't too long and keep the pace up. Great work!

Haha, I love how you have a series of LD entries :)

Nice one! Would love to see more original story games entries at LD, there's more potential in them if you can fit them in theme

Nice attention to detail with the buttons actually embedding in the rest of the site. Interesting take with the lockpicking hooking in to the 10 second iteration  Good music - with a nice relaxed and moody vibe (at least to me)

just realized you have a series of halloween games, never seen a series of games in a game jam before lol creative idea, I love the story telling element of this game, my first ending was apparently the longest one to get to  what can I see, I'm a detective by nature or something lol. though I feel like the only reason that you implemented the lock pick minigame is so that the game matches the theme, oh sneaky sneaky you.. great work!

hungryroy 2022-10-08 14:16

Interesting story, though I don't think I managed to explore all the paths. Could have used more them tie-ins. Nice atmospheric music

@wouter52 @incd021 @ben-barsdell @lustdante @corporation @purpledartfrog @0x-void-x0 @hungryroy Thanks for playing!

> I like that there is a lockpicking minigame inside this story. It felt a bit out of place though, because I could not discover any other minigames.

Yeah, I wanted to add a few more but ran out of time. I ended up squeezing music/sound effects into the final 4 hours as it was.

> I made a point-and-click adventure game recently and it was a lot of fun writing it, I hope this one was for you too.

I enjoyed it a lot, I want to make a custom engine and start exploring this genre in future LDs.

> Nice attention to detail with the buttons actually embedding in the rest of the site.

I'm not sure what you mean, but I'll take credit for it :P

> though I feel like the only reason that you implemented the lock pick minigame is so that the game matches the theme

Actually I'm a Skyrim junky and only added the timer to it when I realized my theme interpretation would be at the end of the game :P

> I’d like to see a finished version of this little adventure.

I've explored the world in my head quite a lot. It might take a while, but I think I'll eventually make this series into a full game

It's not a common idea to do a text quest, I didn't get the point, but I liked the mechanics associated with breaking the door, a very unusual mechanic that you can mostly see in AAA projects. I am surprised and amazed that so much work was done by one person. It is obvious that you are a pro. Great job! :)

Nice text game and I liked the music

This is a nice little game!

So, first of all, one thing I think is really quite neat is the way that the back button impacts the story. In my short-term memory I can easily keep track of several of the diverging paths, and so I basically played the game as a sort of depth-first search, where I would still have some general idea of the endings (and the paths to reach them) that I had just played.

This meant that I was really, like, reading a nonlinear story, in a way that felt really natural and let me get a very precise idea of what was going on. This is pretty cool, and I'm not sure I've really seen it before. Sure, lots of games have diverging paths, but the key mechanic is the "back" button. I mean, I guess other games have probably done that before, but I'm not sure I've ever played one.

Another thing I found pretty neat was the letter that could be found. I did not go back and play the other Trick or Retreats this time, but the letter definitely was reminiscent of their stories. I think this was a really nice touch, even if its only really perceptible to people who have played the other games in the series.

Overall a nice little chill game, with a well-done nonlinear story.
