I really liked the audio, graphics (was really interesting), and mood. Sadly I couldn't figure out how to actually go about finding the transmitters. Some more instructions needed?

raptor851 2022-04-05 06:48

it took a few tries to understand, interesting concept

boclow 2022-04-05 06:50

@adrien-tremblay thank you for feedback. I am sorry to hear you had trouble finding the transmitters. The idea was that you would rotate around, and when the compass shows the most teal color you walk that way. When you reach the transmitter you hear a click and a beep to indicate that you reached that one and a new one will appear. This a bit obscure in the game at the moment and I have to see what I can do to make it more clear. Thank you for playing.

boclow 2022-04-05 06:56

@raptor851 Thank you for playing and glad it was at least understandable after few tries :D

suvi 2022-04-05 07:00

Fun game, I like the audio immersion and minimalistic visuals!

dustya29 2022-04-05 07:25

I always love to play hearing-based games like 'Dead by daylight' or 'Rainbow six siege' because they make me nervous. (only the players of those games will understand this) However, i think the playtime looks a little bit long. btw character looks cute.

boclow 2022-04-05 07:44

@suvi Thank you for playing and glad you liked it.

@dustya29 Thank you for feedback. It is a slow game and it turned out to be quite long for a jam game (I tested it later and took me 30 min to get the "good ending"). I was planing to shorten the game some, but didn't have time for that. However, I think you can get the main feel of the game pretty fast. Thank you for playing.

sammot 2022-04-05 13:27

I couldn't find the transformer, one time I just ran toward it and nothing would change.

fosf0 2022-04-05 17:38

The setting you created is great! (I loved the sound and art)

mr-kitkat 2022-04-05 17:59

Wow, what a spooky little game! Very cool audio and visual design, even though it was minimalist. The main characters hair blending in with the background was a neat touch. Made in gamemaker, too! Great stuff!

sagiii 2022-04-06 00:01

Hello! I liked it a lot. Making a game almost only based on the sound is pretty cool but it is surely creepy because us player can't use more senses. It's an interesting idea to develop and maybe achieving something great.

dirkinz 2022-04-06 00:12

You managed to do more with just auditory story telling than a lot of people managed to do with their whole game. The only thing I would have loved to see is use of stereo sound to indicate direction.

boclow 2022-04-06 06:30

@sammot Thank you for feedback. I am sorry to hear that. Most of the time you have to circle around a bit when approaching the transmitter to get right to it.

@fosf0 I am glad you liked it :D

@mr-kitkat Thank you for the praise and I am quite pleased with the hair blending myself as well. Gamemaker for the win!

@sagiii Thank you for the feedback and I am happy you enjoyed it. And yes, this is definitely something I will have to do more developing with at some point.

@dirkinz Thank you for the compliment! Stereo sound is definitely something that this game needs, but it is beyond my skills at the moment.

thecoconutdream 2022-04-06 11:11

Wow, cool concept! Using mostly audio is a cool idea. You could use that furthermore to make indications for the player, but yeah I liked it!

sofignedova 2022-04-06 11:23

A very curious concept. It looks fresh. Audio and Visual - top. Looks great for this story. Yes. A little long within the gamejam, unfortunately. And it's hard to figure out how to play. But the authors are cool! Give me five!

boclow 2022-04-06 13:39

@thecoconutdream Thank you for playing and yes, next time I should use stereo sounds to have clearer indications of directions.

@sofignedova Sorry you had hard time with the game but glad you liked some aspects of it :) High five...!? :D

skruffye 2022-04-06 13:52

I really liked this, once I realised what I was supposed to be doing. It's a really interesting way of simulating having to rely entirely on your sense of hearing. It was also a lot longer than I expected.

I think the "creature" managed to get somehow "stuck" on me once or twice and I had to wait quite a long time for it to lose interest. The main drawback for me was a lack of depth in what you could do to interact with the creature and maybe keep it at bay. I'll admit, I don't know how I'd fix that issue myself, but in fairness, the road noise to distract you and the things you could step on to draw the creature closer to you by accident went a long way towards making the concept feel more fleshed out.

Overall, great job! It'd be interesting to see if there's anything more you could do with the concept post-jam!

(Oh, the map you get at the end was a great touch, too!)

boclow 2022-04-06 14:09

@skruffye Thank you for playing and for feedback. The "something else" getting stuck near you is an "AI feature" that I should have ironed out, but I ran out of time. I could make so that you could throw a rock to distract hostile entities. I also have some other creatures that I could ad post jam and also other soundscapes but I will have to see If I have time and energy to do post jam stuff. (glad you liked the map :) )

kabloosh 2022-04-06 17:33

This was a pretty fresh concept with the audio idea. It certainly was nice with its mood presented. I think panning the audio from left to right or right to left for when the hostile entities are around would've been interesting. It not only makes it a bit more terrifying, but it adds a nice little element that lets you know when they're close or far from you. Also, maybe shorten the game so that the player doesn't feel dragged on too long, since it's based on audio only. Overall, it was a nice, simple experience.

boclow 2022-04-07 06:08

@kabloosh Thank you for feedback. Yes, this kind of audio only experience really needs the stereo sounds or more so you could actually hear where everything is. I should have just made the length of the journey bit shorter.

bastienre4 2022-04-07 12:18

Hello there! I loved the mood, moving only using sound really build up the tension. Good job!

uboretsky 2022-04-07 12:43

Oh, it was great! first several times i just rushing and dying, but after i recognise, how it works. Awesome sounds and minimal art style make it more tension Very interesting concept and good game! darkwalker_flkjsqprvh.png

boclow 2022-04-08 06:43

@bastienre4 Thank you for playing and for the kind words :)

@uboretsky Thank you for playing and congratulations for beating the game :D

ardorugus 2022-04-08 09:43

Pity the text need editing. Despite that, the sound design and the idea are intriguing. However you have to play like some kind of Dark Souls of sound in order to get what's there and how to find or avoid. Thanks for the thinking, man!

nullval 2022-04-08 10:31

wow, really inventive way to create a minimalist exploration game. The whole atmosphere is nicely built from the sounds, the player character is making as well as the environment.

sine-nomine 2022-04-08 22:44

Very neat, I like it a lot! Good idea with very, very good execution. The sound design was consistent and made it very immersive. A bit repetitive for it's length, for I was beginning to think it was endless, and might have stopped if I didn't read the comments saying there was an end. Although there were enough different areas and sounds, it just could have had less beacons to collect.

Does the traffic pose a threat? I tried to avoid blindly wondering into a road while cars are passing, and I either crossed safely or it wasn't actually an obstacle.

coderaurus 2022-04-09 07:17

Very interesting concept. The sniffing got kinda repetitive after a while, especially when the thing was circling around you for a while and you couldn't do anything. Appreciate the audio design otherwise.

There were quite a lot of transmitters and around mid-way I was wondering whether the game had an ending or not :D Maybe there could be less of them due the slow pace. Or indicate somehow where you are in the progress every now and then?

I thought I beat the game at power supply but got the game over screen instead. Didn't hear anything near me.

Good job, very different approach than usual!

sarah 2022-04-10 05:15

I love that you went about things differently this time, by trying to make a game around the existing sounds. The graphics are super cute and I thin it's a really interesting idea.

Overall, well done!

boclow 2022-04-11 06:04

@ardorugus Thank you for playing!

@nullval Thank you for playing and glad you liked the atmosphere :)

@sine-nomine Thank you for playing, feedback and for the kind words. Traffic does not pose you any threat but originally I planned to have sort of an death wall where the cars go.

@coderaurus Thank you for feedback. Length of the game seems to be the biggest problem yes and if I manage to do a post jam editing, I will adjust the length a lot. Also, as much as I like the idea that you are helpless to do anything but stand there, I might ad some sort of distraction system, so you could do something for the almost endless sniffing. I am also sorry for what must have been a bug with the ending.

@sarah Thank you for playing and glad you liked the art :)

daniel-dewaswala 2022-04-12 11:57

Great work! The audio design is fantastic the art looks great and the idea is there, But the first couple of times I played the game just wasn't explained very well and as I was about to comment that I don't understand anything I read some comments and gave it another try, I must say its a good game if you understand it. Also can you add just a indicator of how much game I have completed?

awsumpwner27 2022-04-12 15:47

Wow, the way you established the setting of the game with audio was extremely effective. Also, I really like the character design. Nice work.

boclow 2022-04-13 05:21

@daniel-dewaswala Thank you for feedback and kind words! I have to think what I could do to explain the core concept better. I am sorry you had hard time at the start. With my current system I don't think I could measure exactly how much you have left, but I had plans to mark at the end how close to the end goal you were if you die before that.

@awsumpwner27 Thank you for playing and I am happy you liked it :)

ironcutter 2022-04-13 21:53

Took me a while to understand how it works, but it is really immersive and the (neatly designed) minimal UI helps focusing on your dark fantasies. Well done!

lilkrit 2022-04-18 13:14

Very innovative. The game was kinda creepy, I think that was the goal though. Nice game!

sulo 2022-04-21 18:28

First try, I guess I finished it! I'm a sucker for sounds and I've been toying w an idea in similar vein once or twice. It's slightly too easy, and gets a bit repetitive after a while, but because of the nice idea and the atmosphere created with not showing much and some very basic field recording I like it a lot and I think it's my favorite entry to this Jam. Nice job!

boclow 2022-04-22 05:52

@ironcutter Thank you for feedback and glad you liked the UI :)

@lilkrit Thank you for playing. Yes, i wanted to go bit on the creepy side with this one.

@sulo Thank you for playing and for the feedback. I would be very interested to play it if you tried to make a version of your similar idea! There are great suggestion in the comments what could be done differently and what would be nice to ad.
