Very classic, and well put together. I couldn't find my way out of the first area - but it felt great, like a classic gameboy game :)

This game is well-made. The colors are really beautiful and it has that GameBoy vibe to it. It's also really challenging as you can't see very far and have many paths to explore. I think it's hard but not unfair which is very good. The one thing I'd add is perhaps stairs serving as checkpoints.

I had trouble finishing the game but I loved the dark ambiance and the retro look!

antonishig 2021-04-27 19:47

Wow. Love the b/w style, it has a really nice retro feel. Walking in the room filled with fire traps without seeing the exit was a fantastic climax Great work!!

Not gonna lie, it took me a while to beat the game

:heavy_check_mark: The game was truly infuriating, but in the good way. It is difficult, but not punishing*.

The visual style fits very well together, and the sound effects are good too, although a few of them seem to be missing (like the "cannon" trap).

The "torchlight" upgrade was HUGE, it's like a different game with it.

:x: I agree with pretty much everything @mexou has said: - the traps cycle is very hard to determine because there ir no sound feedback or anything like that - as there are some hard spots close to new checkpoints, it feel bad to die just before one, which sadly happens multiple times :slight_frown: - all the floors feel a little samey, differentiated only but the (scarce) use of the power-ups, and a greater number of traps

Phew made it to the end eventually.. I have to say it was a little infuriating because the timer for spikes is quite long I kept getting impatient and chancing it and inevitably getting killed. Love the minimal retro aesthetic and artwork was really nice. Basically agree completely with the feedback from @mexou. I have a habit of getting lost in games anyway so a maze game was likely to be a bit frustrating for me personally. Would have been nice to see a a bit more variation of obstacles I was defintely feeling like I had seen enough of the old wait for the spike by the end. So maybe a little long for the amount of obstacle variation on offer. Also before you get the torch upgrade the tiny light area combined with the one shot death feels maybe a bit harsh. Music had a nice feel to it but in the end the loop got to repetetive for me and i had to mute. Overall nicely put together a solid entry.

noxymu5 2021-04-28 23:48

Really solid entry. The only fact that annoys is that player hitbox is not obvious and i had few unfair deaths.

boxedmeatrevolution 2021-04-29 04:26

Was pretty fun getting to learn the layout of the map. Even after I beat the game, I know there were a few optional areas that I didn't get a chance to see. Music was also nice. Even if you didn't have time to make new features for each of the different floors, I think it would have helped a lot with differentiating them to have each floor have a different focus in level design. Ex: maybe one floor with narrow passages and spikes, and another with wide open areas and flame pits, or something like that.

I downloaded the fix version. Windows did not let me run it, instead it got banned and removed by windows defender.

Good graphic and colour style! I really have fun to play this game! Thank you) Great job)

kfischer-okarin 2021-04-29 07:47

Nice retro GB optic and sound :) Dying after just one hit made it quite difficult but it was still fun :) Good job!

linky439 2021-04-29 20:57

@oc1d : very strange, I don't know what could cause this... :(

@patvanmackelberg @mexou @arista @vitor-figueredo @antonishig @automatonvx @noxymu5 @boxedmeatrevolution @alina-baybulatova @kfischer-okarin Thanks for your feedbacks! Yeah, the hitbox can be sometimes a bit tough to read, but it's nice to see you enjoyed the game!

saintchristopher777 2021-04-29 23:40

This is really cool! With the upgrades and good level design if seems pretty complete! My only constructive feedback is that it might be good if the player sprite/hitbox was _slightly_ smaller that the corridors, so that getting into a t-intersection (for instance) didn't take quite as much precision.

Great entry!

alexhall 2021-04-29 23:41

Oozes with style, good level design, but very punishing ^^ Some deaths while learning the dangers of the maze were frustrating ;)

pijamar 2021-05-01 01:40

Very well put together, masterful level design. Definitely had some punishing areas, but it never felt cheap or unfair. The only nitpick I have is that the player movement sometimes gets a bit imprecise and it's hard to know exactly in what "tile" you're at, which makes some specific sections a bit more frustrating than necessary. Art and sound are amazing, very pleasing for my nostalgic taste

harmadillo 2021-05-01 13:07

Enjoyable game. Game play and graphics were very good. Liked the style. Minor frustrations were navigating on T junctions and judging distance to stand safely between 2 traps.

cody-miner 2021-05-01 19:54

Really great art and music; reminds me of Total Party Kill. Very impressive for 48 hours.

trexxak 2021-05-01 22:43

I too had the game trigger Windows Defender, weirdly enough though, the original version didn't have that issue.

So to the game itself: Incredibly solid entry for a COMPO! It did take me a bit until I made it through, but it definitely was worth it :D

bobafett89 2021-05-08 12:04

Nice game, i like music and retro art style, radius of view with torch feels comfortable maybe too much, but brightness starting to feels very uncomfortable. Well done!

tessahardin 2021-05-11 15:47

what a great game. I really enjoyed the art and simplistic color palette. and incredibly impressive for only spending one day on it all by yourself!

anchorlight 2021-05-18 08:42

I apologize for how long it took me to get around to playing this game.

Stellar work on the presentation. The art is very clean and conveys the purpose of most objects well. I did end up dying plenty to stage hazards anyway, but that's my own fault. The level feels a little convoluted at times, but as far as the theme goes I wouldn't have it any other way.

The music is great for the style. I do feel like some measures get a little chaotic here and there. The unusual time signature and syncopation gives off a sort of sea shanty feel to the track that really adds something to the game, and I'd love to hear the song on its own outside of the game.

I did have the audio cut out once or twice, and I'm not sure if this is a game issue or the fact that I ran the game on Linux. That's basically it for bugs.

All in all, this is a great entry, and that's ignoring the time it took. The fact that you not only submitted it for Compo but didn't even use the full Compo time is awesome, and makes me wonder what you would have changed with a little more time.
