haha funny guy fall down

mduo13 2021-04-26 01:41

I did it! 2021-04-25_183818_091419608.png

I don't understand why "championship" mode sometimes jumps the opposite direction. It seems like the yellow guy has a facing, but I didn't quite figure it out. Some of those screens were pretty hard, but it was satisfying to figure out how to get past them. The green bouncy surfaces were extra fun.

matthewrobo 2021-04-26 02:14

@mduo13 Champion mode is a one button mode. The rules are simple, and I think that it is more fun for people to figure out the facing logic for themselves.

If I figure out how to spoiler tag things or have great demand otherwise, I will keep the facing logic for Champion unexplained for the time being, as an exercise for the player.

That being said, the facing of the player is always visible on the sprite itself, based on its arm/nub thing.

Thanks for playing though, that's a pretty good score for Frog Mode.

An interesting game, I really liked the graphics and the idea I would be glad if you rate my game <3 https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/$240408

Wow, this is a really tightly designed game. Dead simple concept, super well executed. Could have used some more sound / music, but eh, it’s compo. The levels did a great job of introducing the mechanics of the different wall materials—I enjoyed the green section the most, it was fun finding a way to progress without manual jumps. Made it in 189. Great work.

Cute and to-the-point. While there aren't a ton of mechanics, I was impressed with how much interesting design you were able to squeeze out of each kind of material. I played in left-right mode, and I feel like it could have benefitted a lot from a visual indicator of how close you are to your maximum jump height. (I noticed that the player's sprite changes, but the animation seemed to finish before I reached max charge.) Besides that, it was a really good experience!

Love the game!

Very simple and elegant, I finished Frog Mode and went pretty far into Champion Mode. Levels are pretty tightly designed and it was fun figuring out how to beat each one of them. Champion Mode was more challenging but also more interesting to play I thought.

Graphics are simple and working great, it's a good compo entry overall, good job!

The gameplay is simple but addictive.

You should add a background music to create an ambiance. The sound of the jump is cool but too loud and too repetitive.

An FX to indicate the power of the jump could help the player.

I enjoyed playing the game. Great compo

I think the concept of this game is very solid and the simplicity of its controls makes it a really great candidate for a mobile experience. I now that the guy's hand points at the direction you will jump next but it is not as obvious as I would like it to be in order to allow me to move faster in the game. I think it would be helpful to maybe add an arrow above their head to quickly remind me of where I am moving to next. Perhaps this arrow could be a set of arrows that could show you how much you've charged your jump and help you better gauge your travel distance. These are just some minor things to help improve what I think is already a solid game. Nice work!

Pretty sure at 10+ minutes and 340 jumps I'm not speedrunner material

I have to admit I really got into this game as I progressed, which is rare for a Compo game. The level design is absolutely on point. This is a thoughtfully designed and precise game. The green bouncy stuff was especially fun! Well done!

That was fun! Good mix of mechanics and really tight levels. Some of them were really really frustrating - not having any indication of where your jump would end up made it very difficult, but perhaps I just needed to get good. Really fun little game!

Fun game :D i love the game mechanics. Controls are easy intuitive

ciaranw 2021-05-15 10:26

Nice simple graphics, sounds and gameplay, and very well executed! The jumping feels very satisfying, and while I think it would be nice to have some visual indication of how charged your jump is, it was simple enough to figure it out as you played.

I do like that the mechanics are so simple that you can just figure them out as you play, without the need for an explicit tutorial or instructions!

Nice difficulty curve too. I don't think I was the best player, but still completed it and was engaged throughout! Nice one!

zubspace 2021-05-16 21:16

Great concept! The way to jump around is really special. The levels are outstanding! Had a lot of fun. Also like the minimalistic graphics and the jumping sound fits perfectly.

Here's my highscore on the first try:

Unbenannt.png **Loved** it!

adam-gould 2021-05-16 22:35

I really like the way it feels to play this, there's a lot of really nice feedback once you've launched, but I would have probably appreciated a "charge" bar to help figure out how charged up my jump is.

the-neon-shark 2021-05-16 23:06

Fun little piece - played it all the way through! Some notes: - I enjoyed the graphics style quite a lot! It was simple and pure. - The 2 or 3 sound snippets that existed in the game didn't complement the artwork in a constructive fashion. I think that something more springy for jumping and squishy for landing would've been nicer. - The jumping power felt inconsistent. I had a decent intuition for its behavior, but I had a tough time getting the jumps to be repeatable or predictable. Maybe the power meter could be more visible than the small particles under the player? - Sometimes the momentum wouldn't be reversed when hitting purple objects, but rather totally stopped. This felt like a bug, but may have been by design. - The green bouncy materials were the BEST!

Great work :)

adonisdevs 2021-05-16 23:43

I got 3m34 in frog mode! This is pretty neat, but sometimes frustrating - maybe add a jump meter that shows the force so it's easier to time. Nonetheless, well done :)

lilkrit 2021-05-16 23:44

I like the game :D

matthewrobo 2021-05-16 23:45

@the-neon-shark Hahah, yeah, I tried recording new sound effects but I couldn't really find anything good. The sounds are of me hitting pillows and stuff, which is a very natural sound for the very digital look of the game. And yes, the horizontal bounce blocks not bouncing is a bug, and I haven't really figured out how to resolve it yet. I'd probably have to refactor a bunch of spaghetti code to figure it out.

@adam-gould @ciaranw @natpat @the-neon-shark @bipmo-bopmo @prodigalson @duck-reaction In fact, the game's post-compo update 1a versions and beyond have had a charge indicator implemented. It's relatively subtle, but it's there and I think it fits the visuals of the game. Try it, and maybe give me your thoughts? I'd like to think my implementation was pretty unique and interesting.

@klaus-peter @zubspace @natpat @udo @mduo13 @mahalis Thank you very much for posting your scores. You're all beautiful.

[2:45 and 125 jumps]

Despite being a pretty simple game, the gameplay is pretty enjoyable. The sounds are very (slappy?) pleasing to hear, though some music would go a long way. The gradual introduction of the environment mechanics is nice.

Well done!

pijamar 2021-05-17 00:50

Amazing how such a simple gameplay and mechanic can be so innovative and satisfying. I could see this being a very popular commercial game with some polish and maybe a level editor. Hope you keep working on this, well done!

ardorugus 2021-05-17 03:49

No way I can beat you! Not a game of my type, however interesting leap mechanics. Lacked some fun, when getting deeper. Maybe, if you add some... enemies? Dunno. Still, simple and nice.
