Nice little game here. :) I love the artwork and sound effects!

The player collider seemed a little bigger than I'd expect it to be which contributed to a lot of my deaths, but overall I had a fun time with this one!

Nice first jam ! I liked the graphics, and particularly the skulls which help to choose the right path, good thinking !

gilad-bar-ilan 2020-10-05 17:21

GREAT GRAPHICS! Liked the game!

kevin-meissner 2020-10-05 17:22

Rellay nice Artworks :-) Ah and now I understood the idea with the skulls. Nice hint.

matthewdavisgames 2020-10-05 17:23

Love the graphics! Really nice work there. Sound seemed a bit lacking, but still fun.

iorena 2020-10-06 09:14

Very cool game! Simple idea but the audio and graphics make it engaging.

tero-pulkkinen 2020-10-06 09:15

I like the art style.

mimir 2020-10-06 09:16

A very nice little game! I agree with @coleslaughter here, the hitbox of the player is a bit bigger than expected, makes it frustrating sometimes. But overall very nice game, nice graphics too!

indiequest 2020-10-06 09:18

Very nice artwork, I love that the UI and game fit so well together. The track mechanic is very nice and adds alot to the game. I had a lot of fun, thank you!

peteh 2020-10-06 15:22

Hi! I liked the art style, the characters and backgrounds are drawn really well! I agree with the others, in how the collider is a little too big for the character, but its a minor bug. The UI is great! Loved how well it fitted in with the rest of the game.

To conclude, a great game! Congrats and thanks!

eldelhas 2020-10-06 15:26

Nice game, easy to understand, beautifull. Some problems with the hitbox of the hounds is a bit large and it's hard to get the right path sometimes. I feel hard to see the theme stuck in a loop, except the die and retry ! good job anyway, this was fun :)

spacecadet 2020-10-06 16:26

Thanks for the feedback everyone, we really appreciate it :)

@eldelhas The loop was intended to be when you choose wrong path and are forced to restart the current level. So in a way you are stuck in a desert until you find your way out. On the other hand when you die the level and the correct path might be different.

gonzalol 2020-10-06 17:08

It's a good game for a first jam. Simple but effective. It will fit better on the 'Nomad' theme, maybe.

toulou 2020-10-06 18:50

The game has a nice atmosphere, the graphics are great with a lot of details, that's very cool! The gameplay is simple but overall I liked playing it. Good job!

zachsbutt 2020-10-06 19:48

Great art! I thought the gameplay could use more feedback, it was a little hard to tell when something would hit me or not.

keithdae 2020-10-06 19:57

Nice game, good job! The hitbox is indeed quite unforgiving but it's enjoyable nonetheless.

fc85057 2020-10-07 00:05

Simple yet satisfying gameplay. Kept me going for a little while. The art style is great; I especially like the character/camel models. Good use of shadow and lighting to give everything depth. As others have mentioned, it is a little unclear when you will or will not be hitting something. Sometimes I saw my health drop to my surprise. The audio is also turned down a bit low.

ellladee 2020-10-07 16:17

Love it!

misterm 2020-10-07 20:46

The graphics are nice, the gameplay is a classic. sometimes the collisions with snakes is not so perfect. Good job

byazzle 2020-10-08 08:51

An excellent first jam! Graphic style was great. Would've loved to see the loop theme pushed a bit more but a great entry nonetheless.

bredera 2020-10-08 15:45

Nice little game, liked the art a lot. However the hitboxes of the enemies felt a bit broken. multiple times I got hit without actually hitting enemies. I think this game implemented the theme very nicely.

spacecadet 2020-10-08 20:48

Thanks again for all for the nice feedback!

Yeah I agree that the hitboxes are a bit too big. However, @bredera and @fc85057, if you took hit clearly away from the enemies, could it be that your hydration level had dropped to 0? In that case you will start taking damage also until you find another water skin. If not then the hitboxes are completely broken on some enemies :D

flying-basement-studios 2020-10-08 20:48

For a first game jam game it's very good. Congratulations. The art and audio is very nice. THe gameplay is quite fun. Just the colliders of the enemies seemed to be too large but that should be quite easy to fix. Good job.

fryer 2020-10-09 02:16

Nice art style and music.

I didn't realise at first that there were wheels and skulls to indicate which path I should take, but after I figured that out i managed to get to the caravan. Maybe some tracks or other more obvious clues would help with that, unless the point was that you had to figure that out.

honey 2020-10-09 12:06

I kept getting lost and got frustrated that I couldn't find a way to prevent it. First I thought that the level stays the same, so I have to memorate it, but that didn't happen. Then I thought that maybe water is only on the right path and I should follow it, but the the water lead me to the wrong path again. Also I thought that I'm far enough from the snakes and hyenas but still they got me. Also the gradually increasing the speed felt bad for me, I think that linear would control much better, either you go or you don't. You only have two directions, so that inertia doesn't feel right for me. Also took me a while before I realized that I take damage when not hydrated, cause there's no visual cue (red overlay would have sufficed I think).

What I expected was that the game plays in kind of lanes, and that enemies can hit you only when you're in their lane. When I realized that the movement is smooth all around the vertical axis, I expected that the colliders would be something like on the picture. scr.png

Still I kept playing for a while cause I really, really like the graphics, and also I wanted to know if I'll ever reach the caravan or if I'm just stuck in a loop of procedural generation. I like the enemy variability, even though there's just two of them, they're very distinct by their behavior as well as player reaction to it. You got some good stuff going on, some neat ideas and very interesting art direction which rubs me the right way, you definitely should keep it up!

somogy 2020-10-10 19:29

Game very well done, I liked the fun provided, good job!

spacecadet 2020-10-12 14:55

@honey Thanks for the detailed feedback. I'd like to clarify some of your points. First, yes the level changes when you die but not when you choose the wrong path. In that case you just start the same level again with the same health and hydration. So you have to memorize the correct route or follow the visual clues (not the water skin but the skulls, wagon tires and foot prints which however could have been more obvious). Once you realize this it shouldn't be too hard to get to the caravan which means also that there is an end. :)

I cannot say much about the controls and the inertia as it is more a matter of personal taste but the speed of the player stays the same during the gameplay. It might feel a bit laggy with slower computer or bad internet connection but the speed stays the same nonetheless.

We thought that it would have been enough of a hint in the description to say that "...and remember to stay hydrated" for a player to understand that collecting water is essential to stay alive. I agree that some visual hint would be nice to have too.

The colliders are too big yes. Something like what you draw would be more player friendly as now the players collider resembles more the whole sprite than just the legs. The enemy colliders are pretty much how you imagined, maybe a bit bigger.

podchasov 2020-10-13 15:21

Good & simple game! Nice work

honey 2020-10-15 20:02

@spacecadet By inertia I mean the up and down movement, the vertical acceleration, the horizontal speed is the same all the time of course. I went back to the game after reading your comment and even knowing that there are footprints still it took me a while to wrap my head around it, but then I finally found the pattern and finished the game. Meanwhile I got used to the controls and started to press and letting off the keys a bit earlier to compensate for inertia. The finish is very nice graphically as well! :)

tweedle 2020-10-19 03:27

liked the diverse obstacles and design, some parallax w/ the background would help things pop. nice work!

konrad 2020-10-22 18:04

This was a very cute and well done entry. The animations are simple but work perfectly well, especially the camel is quite humerous. The drawings themselves, also on the start up and game over screen are very charming. This could have benefitted from more unique obstacles but the snake and the hyena already do a good enough job at keeping it interesting. Hitboxes sometimes feel a bit weird and sometimes deciding which one of two ways to take doesn't feel completely fair. i think you should have just made more and less difficult paths in these cases. The absolute best part of this is the music in my opinion. It fits well with the desert theme, it's super catchy without getting annoying and changes it up enough to not get boring. I literally had this opened in the background for quite some time while I wasn't even playing anymore.

sg-goennung 2020-10-25 17:24

The game is good and really fun to play. I liked the artwork most!
