Once I figured out the jumping mechanic it made way more sense! Tea!
Definitely a bizarre little game. I had no idea you could triple jump until about after the tea guy, so I was continuously falling and trying to place blocks in the correct place... I think being clear that you have multiple jumps would be useful. The character doesn't freeze properly when dialogue is on the screen, so you sort of float around, and the ground detection is a little off, you are able to scale vertical surfaces by hugging the blocks sometimes. The UI is weirdly stretched, but otherwise the paint style graphics are really quirky and cool! The writing was also good, and I like the touch of the character acknowledging that he's fallen back into the hole when you restart the game after beating it.
Keyboard controls don't seem to work for me in the web version, not sure why.
Until I figured out you couple triple jump I thought I was supposed to put blocks above me then fall down and onto them and every time the dialog thing would start again.
Once I figured out I could triple jump it made the game make more sense and I was able to meet the other characters (Though I did fall down again once I met the tea guy because during dialog gravity still kinda works haha). I like the tea guy.
Interesting concept.
@magnusfurcifer Yeah, was going to add multiple jumps to the dialogue, forgot. Happy you liked the tea guy. Yeah Ludum Dare had to be the same weekend as my midterms for grad school
@neonjeff Thanks for playing. Yeah I like quirky characters.
@thezingthing Thanks for playing and yes I make weird things.
@ixchow It might be because you clicked outside the browser window.
The connection to the theme here was pretty light... beyond the initial scene of falling, that was pretty much it. And it didn't really seem so much a loop as it was just a deep pit. Also replaying that whole intro scene if you fall is more of an annoyance rather than adding anything, I would say. Besides that, the mechanics were well implemented for the most part. It was a little strange that I lost all control after getting in range of a character, usually in mid-air... I think this could lead to a failure state outside of the player's control as a result of this.
@doomshmuck The game replays at the end and indicates that you really never leave this pit. Thanks for playing.
I like the humor! I don't know if it's just on my end, but when I was hovering over the "yes" button when asked if i'm out there, the lower half of the button was still considered the "no" button. Overall, nice work on the dialogue, good entry!
@blobo Interesting. I struggled with a lot of things that should have been easy. Thanks for playing.
I love all the characters. The birzzare art style really makes my imagination run wild when it comes to these characters. It ended too abruptly, I could have been climbing for way longer!
@sandpile Happy you enjoyed it. I was thinking of making it Endless but didn't really have time to mess with that code.
Funny as always. Lots in this for a compo game.
@arron-fowler Thanks for playing again. I was happy with the final product but also wasted so much time and wish I just started with 2D artwork could have made a more looping map and added.
@dk5000p time is our enemy and our friend. I spend the last 6 hours of the Jam trying to fix a game breaking bug. Just cracked it by the skin of my teeth. It was close and it took all the time for the extra features I wanted to add. Happy with what I got done, but there is always so much you wished you had added.
Yeah I wasted about 4 hours on the first day messing with clayxels and wanted to do a cool 3D clay look but it was just lagging hard and not working. I had to scrap it and I had my Midterms due the same weekend so was lucky to get a game done.
Nice use of dialogue systems. And I managed to save the guy!
ok so, i had fun, but i have several parts of criticism
- jump is waay too floaty
- the ground spawning mechanic seems to be infinite, but the game tells you otherwise apparently?
- the font resolution is awkward during dialogues
- you *almost* managed to make interesting characters, but the presentation is a bit lacking
- i can apparently spawn as many blocks as i please at the victory screen, which isn't really game breaking, but like, wut
i can see where you're getting at with all this and i have no problem at all with the quirky character art though. overall congrats for the compo entry, making a game in a short span of time is rough and i hope you manage to address these issues next time, especially if you're into making platformers.
thanks!
@jegus9 Yeah I just reused some platformer code I had lying around which is just not the best and given that this isn't a precision platformer or anything I didn't feel the floatiness was the biggest issue. You do have infinite blocks it is more if you created too many blocks and boxed yourself in. Thanks for playing.
@flightless Sadly you never truly save the guy. He gets out and just ends up right back in, hence the loop.
Welp, that sure was a game, with an aesthetic. Can't even honestly say I didn't like it, if there's anything this game has, it's a personality.
But if I really wanted to critique this, I'd say: The place you have to click to place blocks is weirdly specific, the characters you meet along the way don't really contribute anything, and sometimes when you start the slow mo when talking to someone, the character gets stuck in blocks or falls without you being able to control it.
I've become weirdly attached to this though, so maybe the best idea would be not to change anything.
@fupi Yeah after getting the ability to delete blocks I should have updated the code for where to place the blocks. It was mainly to prevent soft locking yourself. I enjoyed the main character and maybe I should have just had you talking back and forth with him and just cut the platforming entirely. I always wonder if people like playing purely story. Thanks for playing.
Looks cool!
@eugenik Thanks for playing
What an experience! Multiple voice acted characters, interesting dynamic story, even going as far as accepting my name in-game :deer:
I always love playing through your games. The ooze personality and take me back to mid-90's indie games, which was the wild west of video games delivered to you on shareware discs. Your LD entries are simply a nostalgia trip.
Loved it!
@langotriel Thanks for playing and I am happy it was an enjoyable experience for you.
Pretty original concept!! I've no idea what I's doing at first, but then I got the hang of it.. SFX are hilarious, so is the art style.. Nicely done!! Congrants on your game! :D
Cute funny little game, I managed to save him! Woohoo! The sound effects were hilarious. My only critique is I wished it was longer with more characters, maybe some spatial puzzles to solve.
@webox Thanks for playing. Happy you got some laughs out if it.
@charlotte-raymond I also wish I could of had more characters. I wasted so much time messing with 3D and scrapping it but there never is enough time.
Again I'm impressed by what a single person can do in two days. This particular entry evokes a feeling that I can't quite place, but absolutely love. I really enjoyed your game, thanks!
@unhandyred Thanks for playing and bringing my vote count to 20. I am happy you enjoyed it.
Heyo, I played your game on stream! Here's the vod if you wanna rewatch; https://www.twitch.tv/videos/765804766
Thanks for submitting your game!
@justcamh Thanks for playing, I'll have to watch the VOD and play your game.
@justcamh The game does loop back with a little different dialogue if you play again. Hitting the theme a little more.
The jump sound is funny! xD
@neithr Thanks for playing.
You caught me off guard at first. The screenshots implied a platforming/action game and then you get the story right off the bat. I actually thought it was gonna be a 100% choose your own adventure dialogue game which is pretty unique haha.
You do transition to the actual game though. Similar to others it took me a bit to figure things out but not too bad. Not too long before I found the triple jump. A bit more interesting than similar games due to the dialogue, it certainly fit the definition of stuck in a loop :)
@peachtreeoath Thanks for playing. Happy you thought the theme was there.
That is one wacky and unique game. The silly graphics greatly contribute to the mood.
@flying-dog-fish Thanks for playing and yeah, wacky is kind of my brand.
hahaha very good!
Perfect game this rules
@pee-thief Thanks for playing.
@jenny-bourke Thanks for the kind words.
The UI needs a bit more work, but the game is fun and the humor got me cracking at many point lol, nice entry and the art remined me of my old MS paint days when I discovered the spray can XD really great
@fadrikalexander Thanks for playing and yeah. I tried updating the generic out if the box from Fungus and it didn't end up the best.
