Nice game! the graphics are nice and have a good colour scheme good luck!

sandpile 2020-10-06 03:56

The game looks really neat, but I some trouble grapsing the controls unfortunately. You managed to pull off a space look without it looking conventionally like other space games.

will-isaacson 2020-10-06 07:08

controlling the spaceship was tough, but it made sense since you're in space. I wish there would have been a zoom level between the overall map and the close up, I feel like one in between would have made certain things very easy. Also, the black holes weren't in the correct coordinates sometimes. But I loved the vibe, good stuff. Congrats on a cool game!

ericbolseiro 2020-10-06 10:58

Hey, man! Good remake of the asteroids game. It was very difficult.

Three things that got in the way a little: 1) The controls are responding only 1 button at a time. so if I shoot, I can't move the ship. 2) There is no control over the creation of asteroids. There was one that was born exactly where the ship was. 3) The ship's energy consumes very fast, due to the length of the game (12 objectives) life drains very fast!

jose-bonilla 2020-10-07 00:42

Thank you so much for the ratings and comments so far :) @samdemaine Thanks for the praise :) good luck to you as well @sandpile Thanks for your kind comments. I think it's easier with a gamepad and also as @ericbolseiro mentioned, the shoot mechanic is tied to a specific state, so it doesn't let you shoot while moving or rotating. Good luck! @will-isaacson Thanks, there actually is a zoom level control with mousewheel (mainly for testing purposes) but I didn't think it was "fair" to actually include it as a game. Good luck! @ericbolseiro Thanks for your great feedback. 1) as said before, the shoot is a separate state, which I think in retrospective was a mistake (it needs to be built into all states in order to be able to do both things at the same time). 2) Agreed, actually happened to me too in a playtest. 3) Agreed, but when you win a race your life goes back to 100%. Thanks for playing and good luck!

Wow, yet another minimalist game (I click on those the most) that looks great, nicely done!

oddsocks 2020-10-07 16:02

Congrats on a great entry. I struggled with the controls to start with, but eventually got the hang of it. You were spot on with the theme. Congrats :raised_hands:

sam-minh 2020-10-07 16:04

It is a very unique experience. Looking for the black holes and following the loops is really interesting. The cotnrols were uncomfortable and very sensitive. There was no incentive to shoot the asteroids. There more also not really a threat. Focusing on the main dynamic of a game, in this case, exploration and navigation will help focus you prject and polish it more. Overall very nice work and an enjoyable experience!

jetyh 2020-10-07 16:13

As others have said, the controls are a little tough to use and also I found it hard to read the quadrants when I was going fast so I kept getting lost and needing to stop. It does look good though and the particles and sound effects add a lot to the experience.

jose-bonilla 2020-10-07 16:37

Thanks a lot for all your kind comments! @necauqua, thanks for your praise :) I love minimalist games as well, plus my graphics skills are nearly zero :D Good luck! @OddSocks thanks for your comments! I agree on the controls, however I'm not sure, apart from tinkering with sensitivity and fixing the shoot+move state, what else could be done to improve them. Good luck! @sam-minh thanks for your kind comments :) control comments seem to be the main culprit. Good luck! @jetyh Thanks for your comments :) I'm happy to see y'all found it looking nice! Good luck!

I really like the atmosphere of the game. The concept is so cool ! It is an addictive game ! The level of difficulty is perfect not too hard no too easy. Very good job 👌😁

jose-bonilla 2020-10-08 05:09

Thanks a lot @fammy! did you manage to rate it? I'd appreciate a rating as well! Good luck!

guaranteedtrainwreck 2020-10-08 12:51

Hey @jose-bonilla !

A nice take on a classic game !

I had a bit of trouble playing it on a AZERTY keyboard layout though, would've appreciate at least the arrow keys ! Also maybe adding the space key for shooting would help people playing on laptop

The visuals are good, I liked the old school breaking appart effect when the ship blows up.

The quadrant system is a very welcome addition to the genre, as I am usually quite underwhelmed by the use of radars and pointing arrows, this is very smart as it still asks some work on the player's part to check if he is on the right course !

Music serves its purpose but feels a little bit repetitive after a while.

Nice work on this jam ! Keep up the good work

Feel free to check out and give me your opinions on my entry

Cheers

Damien

afroant 2020-10-08 14:08

Cool game! I enjoyed previewing the track before entering the black hole to get a sense of when to turn and how to do it fast. It's hard to make one game during a jam, and you managed to fit in two! As I mentioned on stream, the grid could have been smaller, or the tracks could appear all at the same time. Shooting felt weak - I preferred racing and maneuvering around the asteroids. As for the controls, I think people would prefer that when you let go of moving, the ship moves in a straight line. I didn't mind it as it is though. Nice work, and thanks for sharing!

jose-bonilla 2020-10-08 16:07

Thanks a lot guys! @guaranteedtrainwreck Thanks so much for your quality feedback! I never thought of AZERTY keyboards, great point! I will support arrow keys in the future. Also I wrote the music at the last minute, so yeah, not very good. I will check your game as well. Good luck! @afroant thanks so much for trying my game on your stream! The map is bigger than it should be, I agree... it's because I planned to add more features (as always, scope creep). The bullets are weak (too small). Thanks so much and congrats for your game! Good luck!

skeffles 2020-10-08 19:05

It's tricky to control but a fun asteroids style game. I didn't find any diamonds though :/

jose-bonilla 2020-10-08 21:24

@skeffles thanks for playing it! In order to find the diamonds you must enter the black holes and run through the race loop, this will unlock the diamond. Good luck!

miklou 2020-10-09 16:26

Really help to play with a game pad ! Nice concept and adaptation of the theme ! Little bit difficult to avoid the asteroids, but great job !

eugenik 2020-10-09 18:58

Nice entry. Stylish and good story. Good job

sesca 2020-10-09 19:19

I can imagine the fun in the game, but unfortunately I did'nt win a level. I'm too bad in this kind of games.

raphiell 2020-10-09 19:22

Enjoyed the game, but I would have it enjoyed it much more if the stopping your rotation mechanic was removed, i found myself always going off course because I didn't hit x. It made the controls feel floaty and was quite frustrating.

Besides that though it was fantastic! Awesome music, and really fun. Well done.

etrealjunior 2020-10-09 20:47

Hi all right, I would like to leave some comments on the experience of playing your game, I thought the graphics were cool and as you recreated the idea of the asteroids game, I thought the ship accelerates very fast, which ends up making the game difficult, the sounds are well combined, would add gravitational fields for the planets there, when approaching, your ship would be attracted, congratulations again for your game, a big hug.

jose-bonilla 2020-10-10 06:05

@eugenik Thanks for rating and playing my game! Good luck! @Sesca Thanks for trying it, controls did not help. Good luck! @raphiell thanks, I totally agree, controls should have been better. Good luck! @etrealjunior Thanks for your kind feedback, gravitational fields would be amazing and I simply ran out of time. Good luck!

Interesting game with great ideas and mechanics, made for a really unique experience! Though I definitely have some criticisms. I finished it without ever firing the gun (because I forgot you could...) but it turns out the game is way easier if you never fire your gun. Shooting asteroids causes way too many smaller ones to spawn, and ends up taking way more hp from you than if had just let the big asteroid hit you once.

Also the game is quite long, but also quite tedious, repetitive and easy. I still had good fun with it, but some changes would make it even better! I think the races should have a time limit to try to beat otherwise there is no reason to go fast. Also at the moment the best strategy for the asteroid zone is to just point in the right direction, go as fast as possible, and ignore the asteroids.

Anyway, other than those points, I really loved it! Visuals were simple but evocative with great colour. Speeding around the race making the rings change colour gives a really cool fake-3d effect which I love. Sound design was very good too. Mostly though I just love the control scheme, takes a while to get used to but then its a very fun and unique balancing act between speed and turn-control.

Realy great, well done with finishing on time too.

jose-bonilla 2020-10-15 18:33

@jam373 thanks a lot for your kind comments and extensive feedback! Completely agree on everything you said. I also played and rated your game btw. Good luck and thnaks again!

satolas 2020-10-19 05:40

Really loved that game mate ! It's super super polished for the time you had !

pro : - Changing shapes of the black holes. - The concept of the fractal change of scale. First you see the black hole pattern from outside ! Then you enter the black hole and its a bigger scale, and it unlocks a mini-game that looks super good. - Love the fact that in the black hole the Hull is taking damage and changing color if you go out of the loops. - Awesome as well is the gradient of colors changing while you move in the space. - The game is super easy to understand. In 1 second you know you have to get to the right coordinates without exploding your ship and reach the black hole.

cons : - The controllers (rigid body base) instead of transform, are making it difficult to be precise. I would say that maybe the propulsion could build a momentum and make the ship drift as it is now. But the turning should not build any momentum. Now when you turn the ship continues to spin. I tried with Keyboard and Gamepad. with both it was pretty difficult to aim, so I ended going very slow for every black hole. Making the game feel a bit less dynamic.

But overall, for the time you had, what you did is amazing ! I hope you'll fix the little issues with the controller so I'll enjoy the game again :-) If you have few minutes go check out my profile to see the game we did.

jose-bonilla 2020-10-20 04:04

@satolas thank you so much for your kind words and thorough review! Agreed on the controller stuff, as others said I think it's the main culprit. Thanks for playing it! I will for sure check, play and rate your game. Best of luck!

zoeagxn 2020-10-21 11:55

Dodging the asteroids while flying around the map was difficult, but thoroughly enjoyed the game and the unique control scheme of having a constant rotational momentum. Well done!

jose-bonilla 2020-10-22 02:15

@zoeagxn thanks a lot for your kind comment! Best of luck!
